Selected Details From Irish Artist Harry Clarke’s Stained Glass Windows (Sources from Flickr)

Harry Clarke was born on March 17th, 1889 in North Frederick Street, Dublin, where his father Joshua had a decorating and stained glass business. While still at school with the Jesuits in Belvedere, Clarke showed promise in drawing and art and was described as a reserved and sensitive boy. Despite his ill health, including (but not limited to) multiple eye infections, in 1926 a near-fatal bicycle motorcycle crash left him with compression of the skull and multiple broken ribs. Recognizing his declining health, most likely in part of his frequent exposure to lead as a result of his stained glas work he died at the early age of 46 on his way back to Ireland from Switzerland. Not a Swiss citizen he was buried in an unmarked grave with his belongings sold to the public. All in all he was able to create over 40 piecee of work ovr the course of his relatively young life, making him one of the most influential artists of the European “Arts and Crafts” movement.
