Betwixt – Elders

something that we discuss often in tribe of the modern mistake is the lack of elders. Not that we don’t have people older than ourselves or leaders who are here in our lives in some capacity but why is a thority to guide us through a spiritual heritage so that we can create and Blaze a personal spiritual path.

in Western culture we don’t celebrate aging into a large degree we don’t even reveere the maturation process

we emphasize not looking our age we get plastic surgery we’re obsessed with make up things that help us to believe that we don’t look and feel a

our age. However when we go to such great lengths not to feel and look at our age the result is we don’t act our age we don’t mature into full

had experience recently that I didn’t much like none the less I understood exactly what it meant. And that was I felt myself experience in the process of becoming an elder through the process of drama, I went to a plastic surgeon in Miami a couple of times when I was younger and I’m ok with that because that was a part of my life that I had to experience. Which left me feeling that a modern way that we come to be elders is by drama

when we don’t have a tribal totems to draw on a lineage of spiritual legacy and wisdom to kraft into our immediate personal lives we have to get that wisdom from somewhere. We get it from trauma

so the question becomes are we using traumatic experiences way to grow what happens when we are not getting our wisdom from those experiences how do we become elders if we don’t have the lineage to support us and we can’t draw insight from our own pain

The Weekly Rune

The Weekly Rune, cast for 22 September 2017 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts #theweeklyrune

For the week of 24 September 2017

The mind-body harvest.

Kenaz is the half-month stave through 28 September. Uruz reversed is the intuitive stave, and Mannaz indicates Nature's message to us. Read right to left is Kenaz, Uruz reversed, then Mannaz.
Receive the ad-free, full weekly runecast by subscribing through Patreon.  There, find more detail on how the current runes impact human life force over the next week, and how to best manage the curves and twists therein. With a paid subscription, also receive TWR on Sunday instead of Monday, for as little as $1 a week, or for more engagement with me, such as regular Soul Readings, Sabbat Runecasts, and personal runecasts, choose one of the higher subscription levels.

The half-month rune is set by the runic calendar, and governs for a tad over two weeks (a fortnight). The intuitive stave (meaning, I draw it blind) indicates the life force most available to us, which brings the focus of the half-month rune into sharper focus for the present week. It suggests how we can handle these energies. The planetary stave (also a blind draw) indicates the state and needs of the planet, and where noted, of Nature, well beyond the earthly sphere. If you're curious about how I do the cast every week, catch a couple of Instagram videos I do explaining the intention behind The Weekly Rune, and what makes it different from other ways of casting.

Still working through the magickal manifestation formula of the last couple of months, we're in the final stages of grasping how it can all come together. Can I just say I have grumbly feelings about the word "manifestation?" It's gotten such poor use in the New Age vernacular--as so many things have--that I cringe when I say or hear it. It's become synonymous with pulling a wanted outcome out of a hat, when in its original use meant to demonstrate, or to display through action. In other words, it relied on action; it didn't happen without it. There was no sense of entitlement or magickal bestowal. Manifestation meant results through work, which is what we've been talking about for these last few weeks.

Influenced first by Ansuz, with electing how we name things, we arrived at Raidho, or storytelling, then on to Kenaz, where we choose to ascribe meaning to our story.
Soothsaying + Storytelling = Meaning

Ansuz + Raidho = Kenaz

We discussed how Kenaz evokes a sense of something finally long-held back having burned to the surface. Now that we're in the second week of it, we likely have some choices to make, and given the framing runes in the cast, they focus on mind-body concerns. We're also likely fried from the process of having held the insight back, and now regrouping to know what to do with it.

Each of us should take time this week to let the elements of the season work through us. The Equinox is a time of  balance, as light and dark as as close to equal in the course of the day as they can be. For the full Equinox runecast, the Seidrkin level of my Patreon runework.

Uruz reversed suggests extra care be taken for the body, at this time. Rest. Rejuvenate. Do one less thing than is needed. Turn in an hour earlier. Say no. Whatever the process manifestation has taken to this point, it's burning off more than it's giving. Now isn't the time to re-assess the process, itself, and how to do it better. Just drop back a bit. Do less, and for now, it will be more.

Mannaz as the voice of Nature on the matter suggests we enlist the input of others. A social rune, Mannaz is about gaining new intellectual insights, allowing different and new consciousness to influence directions. For most of us that means putting ourselves in new social settings. It can also mean do the homework. Instead of working self into the ground physically or playing out the same ruts for how to get things done, allow new insight to show a new way.

For this week, preservation of body is called for, alongside allowing the mind to blossom in a new way. A bit of recovery is required before moving on, even if the burn to do something with Kenaz's insight has taken over.

It's homework time, and this time it calls for rest and allowing new influences.

The Weekly Rune

The Weekly Rune, cast for 17 September 2017 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts #theweeklyrune

For the week of 17 September 2017

The ancients know the meaning.

Kenaz is the half-month stave through 28 September. Jera is the intuitive stave, and Othala indicates Nature's message to us. Read right to left is Kenaz, Jera, then Othala.
Receive the ad-free, full weekly runecast by subscribing through Patreon.  There, find more detail on how the current runes impact human life force over the next week, and how to best manage the curves and twists therein. The last half-month with Raidho brought us more into the focus of how we tell our story. Influenced first by Ansuz, with electing how we name things, we are now at the point that we choose to ascribe meaning.
Soothsaying + Storytelling = Meaning

Ansuz + Raidho = Kenaz

Kenaz is usually indicated as "fire," or "boil," as in an inflamed sore spot. Both of these evoke a sense of unrest or irritation. Likewise, Kenaz also ties into "keening," or grievous wailing, and also "kenning," metaphoric description of otherwise mundane things. What's significant about all of these associations with Kenaz is they share a state of something bothersome needing expression. In fact, they usually indicate something that's been bothersome for some time, hence the irritation. By the time we've suffered something to the point that it's tipping, we've often entered an altered state around it.

Given the other runes framing Kenazi this week, it's a spark in inspiration, an AHA! moment we've skirted yet couldn't come to the fore until now. Allow it. The circumstances that forced it at bay are no longer dominant. At this time, we can allow this awareness.

Jera as how we can best work with Kenaz instructs us to do a bit of hearth accounting. Make sure the resources are in place to do what we say we want and need. Make sure we truly can support the dream we say we're building. Striving beyond our means may be a lofty goal, though outstripping our current holdings isn't. Be practical. Be reasonable, and don't be afraid to reallocate resources, as needed.

Othala as Nature's wisdom on the situation suggests we look back to see the way forward. Pointing to things of inheritance and legacy, at a deeper level, Othala suggests we focus on the Innangarðr, or known territory, rather than the Útgarðr, or unknown. Nature doesn't worry. This isn't a concept that originates in Nature. Rather, it assess, observes, and adapts. Such is the lesson we are given from Othala. Talk to the ancestors. Look to the family lines to understand what truly is being emphasized in how we find meaning in our stories.

The Weekly Rune

For the week of 10 September 2017
Disappointment as a motivator.

Raidho is the half-month stave through 13 September. Ehwaz reversed is the intuitive stave, and Wunjo reversed indicates Nature's message to us. Read right to left is Raidho, Ehwaz reversed, then Wunjo reversed.

The Runic Calendar - September - by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts

Last week Raidho ushered in the middle factor in the holy formula of manifestation of the first aett. The truth-speaking influence of Ansuz brought the power to help us focus what we really mean, so that when we say it to the world we know it's exactly what we meant. This second week with Raidho, presents some challenges to our equation.
Soothsaying + Storytelling = Meaning

Ansuz + Raidho = Kenaz

Reversed, Ehwaz points to not going deeply enough into the dynamic at hand. Whatever is on the storyboard to manifest, don't let up, now. We've laid the ground work, we've done some really gritty digging and mining of exactly what the spellsong should be. Stay with it. Don't balk at the deeper internal work that's needed.

Many read Wunjo reversed as the mere lack of joy. It's sadness, the dominoes not falling into the pattern we arranged them to. Just as brightstave this rune is sought out in almost every cast, its reversed tone is as leveling. Even when this stave comes up with regard to a job, relationship, or some external dynamic. it reflects disappointment we feel in ourselves. When we are faced with disappointment, we are faced with the fact that our best effort didn't yield the result we wanted, our most empowered rendition of our heartsong fell flat. Reversed, Wunjo is about when we ignore or in some way deny our gut instinct, our deepest intuition, and facing the fallout of that truth.

Wunjo reversed is Nature's memo to us this week, that we can self-correct. We can realize the limitations of our process and stretch beyond them, adapt. As my guide told me in Gift of the Dreamtime, "There is no such thing as failure, only infinite opportunity to become ready.' Everything is a beginning. That doesn't mean we get to bypass the emotional aspects of what's happened, or the real-life ramifications it may have. It means it's our duty not to get stuck in them.

The Weekly Rune, cast for 3 September 2017 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts #theweeklyrune

For the week of 3 September 2017

The Runic Calendar - September - by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts

For the last two half-months we've talked about my holy formula of manifestation in the first aett, and how Ansuz sets it up. Its truth-speaking influence brings the power to help us focus what we really mean, so that when we say it to the world we know it's spot-on. This week we are fully in Raidho, which prompts us to think it all through.
Soothsaying + Storytelling = Meaning

Ansuz + Raidho = Kenaz

Now's the time to work boots to the ground magick. The spellsong has been sung. Raidho directs us to get out in life and live the verses.

Othala, as how we can best work with the half-month stave, shares an interesting insight. It hints at that which is inheritable in our lives, which boils down to estate, titles, and legacy. From a spiritual point this is about ancestors, specifically clan or tribe, as in the known territory (Innangarðr). Exalting Raidho, the conversation then becomes one of looking to the story the ancestors told. Is it the one we want to tell, now? Has something changed? Do we even know the story our ancestors told? Was it the one they intended to tell? What have we inherited that needs healing or acknowledgement? Support The Weekly Rune on Patreon - S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts, Fuquay-Varina, NC

It's easy to see with this focus how it can delve into ancestral work.

Perthro, as the wisdom of Nature, isn't going to clarify that work one bit. Many think of Perthro as meaning luck, which is too simplistic a concept--in the modern understanding, anyway. To the Norse it brought a more complex crisscross of possibilities.  This rune draws on wyrd, or the network of choices made by ancestors, community, and self, which influence the direct things go for us.

None of it is carved in stone, no matter how healed, aligned, or blessed we are, and this is the ultimate message of nature. We are, however, responsible for our actions, and those that others haven't healed. It's a bitter pill for modern mystics to swallow, though the truth is, when we manifest for ourselves, we manifest for All. Be sure to do it well, and with that in mind.

A Little Excitement…

I've been sitting on this for a couple of months...

though I can finally tell everyone! Next year this time, there will be a new little book running around! Maybe not so little, but I love the metaphor!

Last month, I signed a contract with Inner Traditions, for Runic Book of Days, to be released fall of 2018! It's kind of crazy on lots of levels. First off, I never imagined I'd ever write a book on the runes. Second, I have read books from Inner Traditions for so long, I feel kinda fangirly being published by them. I mean, really, if you can have a crush on a publisher... I'm just saying.

(!!zOmGs!!)

Runic Book of Days announced - Publishers Weekly, S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts #ncwriters

The book has been a long time coming, which if you're me, they all are. Just the same, it's been an incredible journey to write. I grew up in a culture of daily devotion--small, bite-sized spiritual acts that serve to engage and internalize faith in the everyday. I've always wondered how to recreate that sort of actionable ritual with the runes, in a way that somehow ties into my animistic path. Well, this is it!

I've long studied Nigel Pennick's work, as well as that as Freya Aswynn, and have worked with their take on a modern runic calendar. As The Weekly Rune developed, the ability to situate runes into the seasonal progression felt natural.

Runic Book of Days announced - NCWN - Publishers Weekly, S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts In the book, I approach this accessibility through half-month devotionals, which lead to personal initiations at the eight Sabbats. It's turned out pretty bad-assed, if I do say. I know it will ire some of the more prescriptivist runesters, and that's okay. It ruffles me, too, not to know exactly what they meant, exactly how they were used, precisely what the calendar was or should be. But it doesn't bother me enough not to come into direct relationship with them now, with what we do know, with what I have learned from them in these 25+ years, and how they continue to evolve in relevance.

So, stay tuned. It's been a long haul to get it this far, and there's still much work to do yet. I have a lot of challenges on my plate (I'll update on that again, soon!), in general, right now. Thanks so much for all your thoughts and well-wishes. Thanks for all your support for The Weekly Rune.

Most of all, thanks for what you bring to the world, every day.

From this moment to you,

~the fangirl

The Runic Calendar - August - by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts

We talked last week about my holy formula of manifestation in the first aett, and how Ansuz sets it up. Its truth-speaking influence brings the power to help us focus what we really mean, so that when we say it to the world we know it's spot-on. As we part ways with Ansuz this week and move into Raidho, we have to start thinking of how we put all of this together.
Soothsaying + Storytelling = Meaning

Ansuz + Raidho = Kenaz

Raidho begins the point that we have to consider how we tell our story. We've taken precious time to decide what the elements of the story should be called, now we must determine what parts of it are to be shared. There's an unspoken aspect of Raidho that assumes we tell it all, and that's the tail-wagging, cheery externalization of this stave. However, when we really sit with the guts of this stave, we realize there's an untold story, as well. In fact, there's an intentionally untold story, and that's the nuance of Raidho that gets overlooked.

Meaning "travel" in how we've had it handed down, Raidho gives a sense of movement, journeying, route, destination, though also motivation, change, growth, plot development. This rune speaks of every aspect of not staying the same, and having clarity (Ansuz) on how we're going to share that experience with others. Maybe we want to divulge every detail. Maybe we only want to feature the highlights. Maybe we have deep revelations that aren't anyone else's business. The point is, it's our choice what we tell, and what we say can't be unsaid. In that light, this stave brings a certain responsibility for how we share ourselves with the world, and for realizing that no matter what we consciously choose to share, ours is an individual trek. No matter what, we ultimately only have ourselves to contend with how we live.

With all of that culling, word salad acrobatics, and people/plot math, Raidho demonstrates the strength and limitations of untold story. More than that, it underscores that there's an un-tellable one. Despite our best efforts and with some personal moments, the words just don't come, or don't even exist, to accurately and passionately capture our experience. Quite often it's this limitation that stymies those on paths of direct revelation, or for those doing deep personal work. Words aren't always enough.

This week, let the adventure unfold. Consider what of self is shared with others, and what's kept private. Why? What would change if more was shared, or in some cases, less? Who is it really impacting? Who is listening?

Support The Weekly Rune on Patreon - S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts, Fuquay-Varina, NC

Dagaz, meaning "day," is the micro-distillation of Jera, which means "year." Dagaz portends the ability to exert the analysis of look back over the year to guage how to go forward, all balled up into one day. With that kind of distillation, we're no longer talking about macro economics, but micro. Think conservation and extension. At this level of scrutiny, we're dealing with the incisive ability to cut to the chase, to cull meaning, on-the-spot.

Supporting Raidho with Dagaz is wonderful. It affirms the work of Ansuz, and is a positive indication of support for the week, in being very clear in how we tell our story. Dagaz assures us that we can refine that scripting in such a way that what we put forward is sincere and straightforward, and something we can be willing and passionate about standing in.

Berkana as the voice of the planet rallies further support and nurture in storytelling. Nature knows when a job is done, when to stop editing, and to just let the work stand on its own. This is the wisdom for the week. Allow the insight to know when the story is told, when to let it alone, and when it's time for a new chapter.

Moreover, allow knowing when it's time to close the mouth, put the pen down, and just be the story.

The Runic Calendar - August - by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts

It's usually about now that I invoke the holy formula of manifestation in the first aett. We talked last week about Ansuz's truth-speaking influence, its power to help us focus what we really mean, so that when we say it to the world we know it's spot-on. As we verge into the second week with Ansuz, it's time to look a tad ahead, and see where all of this naming things is going.
Soothsaying + Storytelling = Meaning

Ansuz + Raidho = Kenaz

Ansuz starts a creative process that really ignites with Kenaz, which is still a month away. Now is now, so while we can count on that action to come, we must be involved with the internal processes that lead up, in order to actually make good use of it.

Support The Weekly Rune on Patreon - S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts, Fuquay-Varina, NC

The nurture of Berkano (Berkana) lies in support of that process. The midwifery rune, it brings all the support and wisdom of the feminine without the emotional confusion of mothering. This third aett stave indicates a modicum of success with some endeavor, an end, a goal met.

In other words, there's no rush to put names to things. Take a reprieve and observe. Do the diligence to get the ley of life--inside and out--then respond. Engage the spirits connected to this part of the work, and let that interaction set the pace of going forward.

The Weekly Rune, cast for 20 August 2017 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts #theweeklyrune

Sowilo, as the voice of the planet, reminds us that we are part of divinity. It isn't happening around or to us, but through us. We're born with this capability, though we make the choice whether to use it.

This is the science of animism. It follows continuous observation, assessment, and action. In order to have that kind of clarity and insight, it has to be cultivated over time, the practice must be tended with care.

That's our homework for this week.

If you're curious about how I do the cast every week, catch a couple of Instagram videos I do explaining the intention behind The Weekly Rune, and what makes it different from other ways of casting.

We've spent the last couple of weeks allowing unconscious motivators to emerge, and where they have, doing damage control. The big newsflash that Thurisaz brings is that nothing gets to be habit, ever. When we start to get comfy with something, along comes Thor with his Mjölnir,  and from that proceeds a strike of lightning that leaves us unable to proceed as we were before. On the surface such a truth seems like a morbid dance of continuous insecurity. How can we ever feel stable enough to stand in our power if everything keeps moving?

The Runic Calendar - August - by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts Ansuz. Called Odin's rune, because it is traditionally associated with his breath, or his spellsong that brought order to our experience of the Multiverse. Note I didn't say Odin created it; that was the Giants, and forces perhaps beyond even them. Ansuz represents the point that beings in the primordial soup began to want their own conditions around things. They wanted some say in how the formed experience was shaping. In the archaic creation story, this would be the point that gods and goddesses brought themselves into being, as we know them. Specifically in the Old Norse tradition, it's the point that Odin said enough is enough, and overstepped the Giants.

Those of you who are long time readers of The Weekly Rune know that I'm in a love thing with Ansuz (words, speaking, *sigh*). However, you will also recall that I'm not a huge fan of Odin. I always found him to be cocky and annoying in the eddas, and it's taken me a long time to understand him in context. The beginning of that context starts with Ansuz, where along the procession into being, Odin decided to be.

In this way, Ansuz is a spell, of sorts. Once we have clarity in knowing what we want and how to communicate it, we've opened the magick portal within us that knows how we must act and behave to continue supporting that intention. The world around us has also gained access through which to do so. That's some seriously magickal shit!

For this fortnight, though this week in particular, take time to distill exactly what is wanted at this time. Don't delve into the kitchen sink, though the big one or two things on the heart, now. Ask: What's important to me? What makes this important to me? How does doing this inspire me? What do I bring to the world when I am inspired?

From these strains, cobble the words that most specifically, heartfully describe desire, form intent.

Then say them, over and over.

Jera tells us the most functional approach we can take to working with Ansuz is to be analytical. Sit down and make lists. Be honest about what's working in life to support how we name things, and what isn't. What is working, figure out how to do it better, more practically. What isn't working, bless it and get rid of it. On this level, again, we're talking about deep habits of how we've seen life and reciprocally named it. It's time for a total rewrite.

Ingwz, as Nature's memo, assures us it's there. The clarity, the ability to bring it forward, to articulate it. In fact, as Ingwaz (Inguz) is associated with the sacred seed--the sacred purpose--it's not just "there," it's animate. It's intelligent, and capable of engaging us. Take some time this week to call in the spirit of what's most needed to be brought to the world right now, each through our own words, our own spells, and by all means, let's do it!

The Weekly Rune

The Weekly Rune, cast for 6 August 2017 on Intentional Insights- by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts #theweeklyrune

For the week of 6 August 2017
Meet change, conserve energy, and be big.

Thurisaz is the half-month stave through 13 August. Uruz reversed is the intuitive stave, and Dagaz indicates Nature's message to us. Read right to left is Thurisaz, Uruz reversed, then Dagaz.

Last week  we discussed Thurisaz as a force of Nature not to be trifled with. Most associated with Thor, and his hammer, Mjölnir, it brings to mind a sharp blow, a strike of lightning that leaves us unable to proceed as we had, prior.

The Runic Calendar - August - by S. Kelley Harrell, Soul Intent Arts One of the more significant change runes, Thurisaz places us front and center with some unconscious inkling screaming for attention. I leave dabbling in stellar influences to the pros, though it's worth mentioning we have a couple of big shifts under the influence of Thurisaz. Uranus and Mercury both turn retrograde, bringing rapid change with an inability to express feelings around it. What's most trying in this dynamic is a tendency to go back to what feels comfortable or known to cope with the way things play out, with a firm Thurisaz reminding us that's not an option.

Give wings to what bubbles up, and let it move through and beyond. Make no grand gestures, no sweeping risks. Do the grounding rituals that seat firmly into body and give it what it needs. This stave speaks of exhaustion--physical and mental--and conserving energy. Whatever transpires with the expression of Thurisaz, sit with it. Don't rush to judge what comes, reacting to it, or making changes around it. Just observe, for now.

Dagaz as the voice of Nature reminds us to make each day count. I'm not one who feels that everything has meaning, in that New Age quasi-superstitious destiny way. Rather, we have the option to find meaning. Sometimes profound insight may be brought in by the turn of events. Sometimes shit just happens. Utimately, what we do matters. What we do affects everyone and everything around us.

Even as Thurisaz unearths expressions that are uncomfortable, let them unfold. Honor the boundary Uruz reversed is setting, and put self-care first this week. Doing so makes us better resources to community.
