A Release Date for “Teen Spirit Guide to Modern Shamanism”
Yay! Not only have I received the release date for my new book, Teen Spirit Guide to Modern Shamanism - A Beginner’s Map Charting an Ancient Path, I also have its beautiful cover! 30 May 2014, it will be available from Soul Rocks Book!
About Teen Spirit Guide to Modern Shamanism
Teen Spirit Guide to Modern Shamanism is a light-hearted and informative handbook introducing an ancient spiritual practice to today’s young adults and beginning seekers. Modern shaman and author, S. Kelley Harrell gives insight into growing from an intuitive youth into a mature facilitator of healing for others, covering the history and roles of the shaman, and their relevance in our shifting times. Complete with instructions on ecstatic journeying, this guide also presents how to incorporate shamanic insights into daily life, and how to talk with others about the modern shamanic path.
The Buzz…
“Kelley Harrell provides you with a wealth of tools to assist you in cultivating your own shamanic path. This is an important book to help readers create a life filled with depth and meaning. Great guide!” ~ Sandra Ingerman MA, Soul Retrieval and Shamanic Journeying: A Beginner Guide.
“Teen Spirit Guide to Modern Shamanism” is fuel for both the head and the heart, offering young spiritual seekers grounded advice and experiential practices for exploring the path of modern shamanism. ~ Hillary S. Webb, PhD, Exploring Shamanism, Traveling Between the Worlds: Conversations with Contemporary Shamans, and Yanantin and Masintin in the Andean World: Complementary Dualism in Modern Peru
“Harrell’s book presents her discoveries of how to approach our ancient potentials and provides guidance for those who find the shamanic path opening for them. While the neophyte shaman often walks a solitary path into the world of the spirits, the protection of the wisdom of our elders has always been essential guidance. Knowledge and experience from the wounded healers of the past can help those who walk the path today. Kelley’s book provides guidance and wisdom to help structure the modern encounter with these ancient spiritual healing principles.” ~ Dr. Michael Winkelman, M.P.H., Ph.D., Shamanism A Biopsychosocial Paradigm of Consciousness and Healing

Weekly Rune – Tiwaz
Tiwaz – Tyr/Thor/Tuisto- I always enjoy seeing this Rune come up in a cast, though I understand why some might have mixed feelings about it. Maybe more than any other Rune, Tiwaz speaks of final hurrahs and the eleventh hour, and all the emotions that come with pulling our dreams out of the fire.
I think of Tiwaz as the “drama” Rune, in the sense that it forces us to deal with the current state of things, as they are about to be upheaved, and us with them. Moreover, it requires that the current state won’t change without sacrifice.
Sometimes we know going into an endeavor that we must be flexible, willing to compromise. In other cases, we realize that the original plan was off track and needs adjusting, that we need to step back a little and rethink things. Tiwaz is none of that. Neither that neat nor graceful, this stave epitomizes aligning divinely with thoughtform, channeling perfect effort into manifestation, putting our heart’s desire on the line, and watching it get stomped to smithereens.
What becomes evident quickly about Tiwaz isn’t that things aren’t going our way, but that how we respond to that fact determines how smoothly we can recover and meet the objective. Most often with this stave, we know what needs to be given up for flow to be restored, we just don’t want to do it.
It’s hard to think we can taste glory, realize what we thought would work won’t, glimpse what will, yet stand in the way. The guilt of refusing to change course is not to be underestimated. No external source is pushing us, no other force can make the call. We know what has to be done, and the commitment to do it is what’s required.
Bless the ego that can’t let go of the original plan, and go with a new one. The bright thing I can offer about Tiwaz is that it means that Plan B succeeds. Whatever it is, whatever the sacrifice, victory comes.
Just turn the other corner and go there.
And now to lighten the mood a bit:

The Weekly Rune – Hagalaz
Hagalaz – Hail – Fitting that this Rune presents itself today, as most of my region is plunged into the bitterest cold its seen since the mid-1990s. Regardless of where you’re located, this stave speaks of being frozen metaphorically, likewise berated by the elements. Indeed, as fun as it sounds.
This Rune revealed itself merkstave, or face down, initially, which intensifies Hagalaz’s chilly meaning. Generally indicating an abrupt external change, this stave speaks as much about the frozen state it describes, as the destructive force we know hail to be. It disrupts our flow. It can take away livelihood, mobility, sustenance, protection. Hail can be a nasty force. Yet, while it holds aspects of frozen Nature, it’s also in motion, a catalyst for focused change.
Given its merkstave position, Hagalaz portends the process of moving from frozen to new awakening, from the unconscious to conscious awareness. Everything changes. As much as we dislike oracles that indicate things we don’t want to hear, still are we wired to act on their message. In this case, know that change is coming. Don’t fret a battle plan, because despite that we know the thaw will eventually warm us, we don’t know in what area of life the battle will be. Make no grand gestures, now. Sit as gently as possible in the tumultuous stillness.
The challenge this week is to hunker down and be vigilant in our process of tending our needs, particularly the places in life that feel stuck. As life warms, the big break-through will come. This isn’t in question. Still, the assurance of an outcome doesn’t take the sting out of what we must go though to reach it.
Hagalaz is about active stillness. As the elements shift, our task is to act on the wisdom we gained in the winter of our stillness, so that when the opportunity to get moving again presents itself, we can act on that momentum to align ourselves exactly where we want to go.

Ten Years in the Blogosphere
I just wanted to take a moment to thank the supporters of my blog, Intentional Insights. I created my blog on this day in 2004, and ever since it’s had fantastic support, a sustained rapport, and a host of featured, cherished others.
I don’t often write on a personal level in my blog. I also often don’t celebrate my own successes. Now that I think about it, those two things are likely related…
At any rate, I’m thrilled for all the relationships that I have formed with others through my blog. Thank you for your inspiration and being candid about what you want to read in it. Thank you for always being kind and honest, and for sticking with it through its various iterations and growth spurts.
Indeed, I do wish us all intentional insights, active engagement, and compassionate wisdom in All Things.
