Weekly Rune – Wunjo
Wunjo - joy – It’s been quite a while since Wunjo heralded the life force most available to us for the week, and it’s never presented itself as reversed before. When it visits us upended, when joy is tilted, crisis is at hand. This is, of course, no newsflash, because we’ve been nursing this dymamic for a while.
The opposite of joy isn’t something we give much thought to. We’re either blissfully joyful, or we want to avoid all consideration of not being so. However, a lack of joy is something that has touched all of our lives, at some point.
Often we think of sadness as the absence of joy; however, Wunjo offers another perspective. As it is the last Rune of the first Ætt, it symbolizes initiation from one state of being to the next. As the first Ætt deals with how we as souls in form bring things into being, it is primarily concerned with how we bring ourselves into being. When we encounter Wunjo reversed, we encounter disappointment with how we are creating ourselves or some facet of our being.
Most of us have more coping skills for sadness than we do disappointment. In sadness, we can surrender to the emotional state of loss, perhaps even grief, and through the introspection it brings, we find catharsis beyond it.
Disappointment comprises sadness, though it also presents a deeper layer. Because we feel responsible for the failed outcome, we are more likely not to deal with our sadness. We didn’t do our best. We didn’t honor our intuition. We didn’t fulfill a deep need for ourselves. Because we feel responsible for disappointment, we are more likely to deny it, to ignore how let down we feel.
Disappointment in a task, competition, or even our job is one thing. When we view it from the level of Wunjo, we’re talking about colossal distress over some aspect of ourselves or our lives not being in line with our soul’s needs, which when denied, becomes unchecked, longterm, seething rage.
Ever-optimistic, Wunjo reversed doesn’t just indicate this as the current state of things. It also presents the timeframe that is right to confront the source of that let down. No, we won’t suddenly manifest the outcome we wanted, though in seeing the source of the rage for what it is, we open our imagination to creating a way out of it, which puts us closer to knowing our soul’s needs, thus actually meeting them.
The thing is, we do get do-overs, and this week, the fates are allying to share this one. Whatever in your life hasn’t shaped as you’d like, dive deep and see the blueprint again, because this time you have help with a repeat, scrapping it for something completely new, or retracing where the plans can be improved.

The Weekly Rune – Laguz
Laguz - Water - I’m seeing an interesting pattern with Laguz. The last two times it presented as The Weekly Rune, Mercury was retrograde. This week it arrives merkstave, though it is pictured brightstave. Despite being home-free of the morass MercR brings, this connection begs us pause.
The prevailing idea here is something else must come to pass before what we’re working on at the moment can manifest. We’re in the groove. We’re flowing, we’re trundling through our paces, paying our dues, entering the home stretch. We know we’ve got this. So what’s the problem?
Anytime this symbol of flow shows up merkstave, we’re missing part of the picture. We’re so hyper-focused on a passion project that we’re not covering the bases of our heart’s needs. It can be so easy to miss this, when we’re otherwise hitting on all cylinders. After all, actively experiencing connection with All Things feels that way, yes? Why would we detour, at all?
Well, because Laguz merkstave says to. That’s its purpose. We’re still going to reach the finish line. This stave merely cautions us to take care of this other little heart thing along the way.
It feels like a distraction. In terms of focus, it likely is a distraction. However, without giving attention back to the inner compass, we can’t reach the finish line–no matter how convinced we are that we’re perfectly aligned with that outcome.
Just as the elements are rallying around us to manifest this passion project, so do they ally with us to make this pit stop. Remember, this little memo wouldn’t be announcing itself if it didn’t put us in direct contact with deep, unconscious drives to fulfill our desires. It is right.
You’re doing the right thing. Hold that thought, and do a self-check of the heart for the stamina to see it through.

Thursday Betwixt – Working with Home Spirits
Wherever you stand, be the soul of that place. ~Rumi
[image error] So often we talk about totems, helping spirits, deities, Guides–which are all well and good. There are other influential souls with whom we can enter into deep relationship, and they’re right under our noses, every day. I call them our Home spirits, though I suspect they can be identified many ways.
These are the Nature spirits, land elders, and the consciousness of your actual home–the dwelling in which you live–who are guardians with whom you are in relationship all the time. They may be your favorite hellebores in the side garden, the cactus in a planter by the front door, the lawn, itself. They may be souls of indigenous land keepers, elementals that have never been in form, the spiritual manifestation of your town or bioregion. The soul of your home, each room, every beam, can engage you.
Being aware of spaces and how we use them, move through them, contribute to them, are affected by them, affect them–all of these are important. Despite that we use them for spiritual practice, most of us don’t bring them into our personal spiritual practice. We’re more conscientious of the rituals we do in spaces, the fetishes bring into them, the altars we build in them, yet how often do we actually engage the spirits of our home space? How often do we inquire about the needs of the land’s elders? How do they embrace (or not) other cultural flavors/allies of our spiritual path?
Acknowledge them, first of all. Create an opening to interact with them. Get a feel for what beings are ever-present in your home space. Invite them into your etheric space and communicate with them. Are they ones you already engage with, or are they new? How are they connected to the land, the home? How do they want to connect with you? Ask what they need from you. State what you need from them.
This ongoing dialogue is key to being fully present in an animistic life, certainly in fulfilling the role of shaman. Historically, shamans served the tribe, a particular territory. Their relationship with the Nature spirits of that terrain enabled their success at caring for their tribe, at growing into their skills, and in working with other shamans, other terrains.
We don’t all have the same access to nature. Some live in city flats, others on farms, carefully manicured suburbia–none of which really matters when we consider the uniqueness of the relationships we form with and around our personal space. For that matter, some of us aren’t that enthused about direct interface with Nature. Sit with that contradiction, truly. Honestly open up to what your role in working with local spirits is, and what they need from you. You don’t have to suddenly become a gardener, wilderness enthusiast, or master of sacred space. But you do have to become the master of your sacred space, or at least its willing host to be part of its mastery of being, of relating. These spirits are the eyes and ears of the places in your life that you can’t attend. They are the true guardians of your home, your personal domain. You are the manifestation of theirs.
When I first started working with the Home spirits of our current residence, I was greeted by many. They told me that in order for the balance between the physical and spiritual world to sustain and evolve, every place must have a human conduit. There must be a sentient bridge through which an exchange of life force happens, a consolidated awareness is forged, and all involved benefit.
We can’t deeply root into our own gifts and fulfill our needs until we connect with the spirits most immediately around us. They’re viable. They are important to our personal path, and our relationship with them is vital to the collective path of the planet. They are the roots we so often try to find in ourselves, forgetting they were already there.
Invoke them.
Bless them.
Thank them.
Serve them.
Be them.
Working with Home spirits isn’t just about where you are. It’s about where you’re going, where they have been, and where the planet needs to be.

Weekly Rune – Ingwaz
Ingwaz (or Inguz) - People of Ing - It’s been a long time since Ingwaz appeared as The Weekly Rune. In fact, it’s been almost a year, to the week.
This stave calls to mind the adage, “where there’s a will, there’s a way.” While it portends the end of a cycle, it also brings a sense of survival and sacrifice to get there.
We tend to look at progress as a steady jaunt to some expected outcome, marking completed items off a list along the way. Ingwaz reminds us that true progress is measured not by our ability to tick off goals or reach the finish line first, but to reach completion in a way that supports and fosters our integrity, shares our truth, and inspires others to hold to theirs. In short, Ingwaz cautions us that plans change, and it’s okay to roll with what comes. Notice Ingwaz can’t be reversed. Change can’t be avoided.
Ingwaz is what I call a ‘hinge’ Rune, in that it’s about that tiny space–or maybe nonspace–between Here—> and
