What Book Lovers Want for Christmas…
Ummm, more books? Of course! But that’s tricky. Book lovers can be a tad snobbish when it comes to receiving books. They tend to have opinions regarding what they read and if you choose poorly…well, you know the look.
So here’s a few suggestions on gifts for your literary friends and maybe something you’d like to pick up for yourself. (If the links are working correctly you should be able to click on the photo to visit the site.)
It might be counterproductive to give a Shakespearean Insult Mug...

Danger in the Manger
It’s that time of year again. As Christmas lights go up and nativity scenes are brought out of the sheds, court cases are filed. Atheists and agnostics lawyer-up in their attempt tokeep recognition of the nativity out of the public square. In fact, some groups have gone as far as to create parody nativities that mock the Christmas story. They expend time, effort and money to dismantle Christmas celebrations and ridicule those who enjoy them.
What’s going on here? Are they really threatened by...

The Hope Chronicles Sweepstakes Winners
A couple of months ago I got an email from Amanda Dykes, Joanne Bischof and Karen Barnett asking if I’d like to participate in a project they were putting together, along with Sarah Sundin. I’m so glad we tried, or else we would’ve missed the heartfelt interaction we had with you. Your comments on the blogs, on Twitter and Facebook encourage and minister to us. Thank you fo...

The Macabre Journey of Eva Peron’s Traveling Corpse
[image error]
“Eyes, hair, face, image – all must be preserved.
Still life displayed forever, no less than she deserved.”
The last scene of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical “Evita” shows lines of Argentinian devotees as they stream past the coffin of their First Lady, Maria Eva Duarte Peron, dead at age thirty-three from cancer. Her waxy figure is displayed under a glass coffin, not unusual for a state funeral, but the last lines of the musical hinted at something further.
Eva Peron’s story is remarkable enough,...

If You Could Keep Only One Letter from Your Mother…
My Mom (far right) and my sisters.
Most everyone has a shoe box tucked away brimming with crisp letters that they cherish. With all our e-mailing and Facebook messaging I hope we don’t forget to occasionally send an honest-to-goodness letter on stationery – something that can be stumbled upon years later.
Going through an old book this week I found a note from my mother tucked between the pages, and it was everything you hope to find in a discovery of correspondence past. Sure, it reflected on...

Who is Our Audience?
[image error]This week I sat in on a meeting that could’ve been held in any church. Our ministry team met to discuss the winter calendar, the service projects, and Christmas programs…and some of the comments got me to thinking. In evaluating the effectiveness of our Christmas celebration, a few seemed to consider the key criteria to be how many non-Christians attended the event.
True, this group was meeting primarily to discuss evangelism and mission projects. In another venue, the conversation could’ve pi...
