They ate in silence and she realized it was nice. Sitting with him, Clarence and Molly asleep in front of the fire. The sound of crackling wood and no one around to interrupt the delicious interlude.“You aren’t married,” Dallas said, as his gaze traveled over her from head to toe.Like a caress. Yeah, that’s what it felt like when Dallas looked at her. It’d been the same back in school. He had a way of making her feel wanted. Even desired. That was alluring as all crap.She answered the unspoken question and decided to ask one of her own in the process. “I was in a relationship until recently. He cheated. I walked.” She paused, took one last bite of her soup, and asked, “You?”“Single.”She rolled her eyes and leaned up to set her nearly empty bowl on the coffee table. “That’s it? Just single?”“Should there be more?”She gave that some thought before answering. “Usually there is. Has there been anyone serious? Anyone special?”“There’ve been girlfriends over the years, sure. There hasn’t been anyone special though. No one I wanted to go the distance with.”Something he said sparked a memory. “You said that before.”“Huh?”“You told me once back in school that you’ve only been tempted to go the distance with one person. You said she was out of your league though. Did anything ever come of it?”He set his bowl on the coffee table right next to hers, then turned toward her. His fingers sifted through her hair, softly playing with the strands as if he’d done it a thousand times. Why did it feel so right? And why did it turn her on so much?“She moved away,” he answered, his voice low and deep. “Didn’t get a chance to show her that I was worth waiting around for.”The way he said it tugged at her heartstrings. “I’m sorry.”He shrugged. “Me too, but maybe it wasn’t the right time.”She picked at the hem of the blanket, more for something to do with her hands than anything else. Otherwise, she’d reach for him. Touch him. Hold onto him for all she was worth. “You were pretty wild back then. Maybe your bad boy vibe scared her off.”“I’m still pretty wild, I just channel it into things that don’t get me arrested.”“Yeah?”“Oh, yeah.”“Like what?”
He took hold of her chin and tugged her close. She could feel his hot breath against her lips. “Like this,” he murmured as his lips drifted over hers in a gentle, barely-there kiss that melted her like honey on a warm slice of bread. And just like that, Cindy fell right on down that rabbit hole.
