Boosting the signal
I don't know
cpolk personally, but she is a good friend of a good friend, and one heck of a writer (here are two of her stories: "If One Should Pass This Way Again" and "Bright Wings and Wax"), and her roommate has just totally, EPICALLY screwed the pooch.
If you can contribute anything, right this minute Chelsea could use the help. ETA: FYI, her PayPal account cannot do credit card transactions.

R.I.P. David Eddings
David Eddings died on Tuesday.
I read and reread the Belgariad as a teenager. The first fantasy story I wrote, when I was twelve, was an homage to Eddings so blatant that I think the correct word is really "rip-off." I'm careful not to reread Eddings now, just as I'm careful not to reread Heinlein, because I know I'll only see the glaring problems, and not the things I loved.
But I loved those books, and I daydreamed about having friends like Barak and Silk.
Rest in peace, Mr. Eddings, and thank yo

Slacktivist explains how the evangelical Right got to the current point of either condoning murder or disowning their own rhetoric.
And something Ursula linked to yesterday, but which--well, if you have an opinion about late-term abortion, one way or the other, you may want to read this article from 2005, a first-person account of undergoing a late-term abortion which also talks very clearly about exactly what a late-term abortion is, and isn't (hint: it isn't what President Bush told us it was),

pure frivolity
'80s hits reinterpreted as ragtime.
And you can segue very nicely, for anyone who hasn't seen it yet, into the Literal Video Version of "Total Eclipse of the Heart".

a link
to
ursulav on the murder of George Tiller, and as is often the case with Ursula, she's said what I feel, only so much more articulately.

this is a new one
I get story ideas from dreams fairly often ("Straw" is a readily available example, if you're curious), but this is the first time I've had an insight into narrative craft.
The idea that a narrative is a series of questions is not a new one. It's another way to think of genre, if you're approaching it from the academic rather than the marketing angle: a genre can be defined as the list of questions a story chooses to answer. Alaya Johnson, Moonshine
Closer to the publication date of Alaya Johnson's novel Moonshine (coming out from Thomas Dunne Books in 2010), I will post a review. For now, I just want to gloat unbecomingly about the fact that I got to read it early.
