Day 35: more verisimilitude

There's a whole list of "worst" things about this broken ankle, ranging, depending on circumstances and mood, from boredom to my inability to sleep on my side, but I can tell you the most horrible thing.

The most horrible thing was mercifully transient, since it only lasted forty-eight hours or so, from the time I broke my ankle Sunday to the time I went into surgery Tuesday, but it's my most vivid memory and the one I most desperately want never to experience again, and that was the feeling, ...

Charlenecam

The doyenne of The Itty Bitty Kitty Committee, the fabulous Charlene Butterbean, is wearing a camera on her collar this week. (Friskies cat food is apparently doing something or other--don't ask me), and it caught this marvelous video of Charlene teaching a glitter ball that life is stern and earnest.

Some things I should mention

1. The Mirador is going out of print in paperback. It's still in print in hardback, though.

2. I have an essay forthcoming in Whedonistas: A Celebration of the Worlds of Joss Whedon by the Women Who Love Them , edited by Lynne M. Thomas (co-editor of Chicks Dig Time Lords and a.k.a. [info:] rarelylynne ) and Deborah Stanish. My essay is tentatively titled "The Kindness of Monsters."

3. Also, if I forgot to say, "White Charles" will be reprinted in The Year's Best Dark Fantasy and Horror, edited by Paula ...

Day 32: Life with Cats, Can't Sell 'Em to the Zoo Edition

Catzilla just stole my quilting thimble and fled with it from the bedroom, through the dressing room and the hall, and into the TV room. Mercifully, he left it near the bookcase rather than stashing it under the futon, so I was able, only slightly precariously, to retrieve it.

I told him it's not nice to take advantage of the handicapped for one's own amusement, but he just crawled under the futon and laughed at me.

Day 30; plus a Q&A

I'm keeping a mental list of things about this broken ankle that don't match up with broken bones in fiction. I already wrote about the sound of my ankle breaking, but here are a couple others:

1. if your crutches are adjusted properly and you're using them properly, they will not make your armpits hurt. They won't even touch your armpits. On the other hand, they will give you calluses on the heels of your palms.

2. maybe this is because of the surgery, or maybe it's because I'm a wuss, but it'...

in case anyone else needs distractions

I've spent most of today reading Cake Wrecks (thank you, [info:] zelda888 !).

Also, there's a new Submachine mini-game: Submachine: 32 Chambers. It's as if somehow Mateusz Skutnik knows. (Which, just so nobody starts worrying about my grasp on reality, no, of course not.)

Day 21

Dear Diary,

Today I got to go outside! I hobbled all the way to the corner and all the way back, and [info:] mirrorthaw didn't have to carry me up the stairs or anything!

Best Day Ever!

Love and kisses,
Mole

So Wednesday I got my new (black) cast. Friday I went and talked to my GP about the restless legs syndrome that has gone, what with the enforced immobility, from minor nuisance to excruciating torture. (Ironically, it's only started plaguing me as the actual broken ankle mends and I cut back on the ox...

meanwhile, elsewhere on the internet

If you don't already know about Simon's Cat * . . . consider this my gift to you today. For lo, there is a new Simon's Cat film, "The Box".

*Simon's Cat is the most hilariously realistic cartoon cat of my acquaintance. I adore it.

update

This morning, [info:] mirrorthaw drove me to the hospital so they could take my sutures out and put on a real fiberglass cast instead of just a splint.

My vagus nerve threw a wobbly in the middle (I swear it was something about having the sutures clipped), so my achievement for today is that I neither fainted nor puked in the exam room.

The cast is a big improvement over the splint. It's not as heavy, and it's much more snug and therefore more confidence-inspiring. I feel like my foot will stay in the ...

The next time you see [info:] mirrorthaw , buy him a drink. Or a cookie.
