Detective Story 1

I was lighting a cigarette off a pile of its dead brethren when the lights went out quick as a fella at sunrise. When they came back on there was a guy in opera clothes standing across from my desk.

I said, "If you're looking for Detective Morgan, you found her."

"Such a beautiful voman in such a filt'y business."

"Romanian. I vant to hire you."

"Try Jones at the Windsor building. He's a commie. Seems more your type."

"I neet a voman detective," he said

Feedback Request

Below is a revised version of Face-Lift 566. The comment trail there was so long (it includes requests from several minions to post a revised version) that I've put the new version here so you don't have to scroll down a mile to find it. The title is new, but though I did put the title in the query queue, it didn't generate five fake plots, so no Guess the Plot.

Dear Evil Editor,

I am seeking representation for my book, Traitor, a 130,000 word epic fantasy.

Writing Exercise

The Third Annual Detective Story Writing Exercise.

You'll find the 2nd on May 4, 2008 and the first 0n May 14, 17 and 18, 2007. Actually, there were a couple others as well, so maybe this is the fifth semi-annual Detective Story Writing Exercise.

The task: write a 1st-person scene in which you are a hard-boiled detective in the Philip Marlowe/Sam Spade vein. A new client enters your office to hire you. The client must be a vampire or Evil Editor.

Deadline: Sunday, 10 AM eastern. 300 words Max.[image error]
