Minecraft installer for Ubuntu

I’m adding this mostly as a reminder for myself.

Installing Minecraft on Ubuntu Just Got Easy

Looking for an easy way to install and launch Minecraft on Ubuntu? ‘Minecraft Installer’ by Cody Garver makes installing, setting up and using the famous sandbox game a total cinch.

Black Flag’s new bass player

Erick Lyle chronicles his adventure hitchhiking to Texas in order to play bass in Ginn’s new Black Flag lineup, being offered the job and ultimately turning it down. Hat tip to Ross for the recommendation.

Can I Get in the Van? | VICE United States

It dawned on me: Black Flag did not have a bass player. I could be that bass player! I decided right then and there to find out where Ginn was living, hitchhike across the country, and persuade him to let me try out—just as I had attempted to do at 16. I knew all the old songs, and I figured that thumbing it instead of flying or taking a bus would prove to Ginn that I had dedication.

They used emscripten, which compiles LLVM to Javascript. Demos and info at unrealengine.com.

Mozilla unveils browser-based Unreal Engine 3 using JavaScript | Joystiq

Firefox producer Mozilla teamed up with Epic Games to bring Unreal Engine 3 to the web, without the need for plugins such as Flash. Mozilla and Epic took only four days to port Epic’s engine to the web by using JavaScript code. The results, as demonstrated by this video unveiled at GDC, certainly look impressive.

Rethinking stress mindset

Here’s more information on distress versus eustress. It inspires to consider that simply changing your attitude can flip the experience over to helpful eustress.

First sleep and second sleep

One of my goals this year is to improve my sleeping quality as a way of reducing stress and shedding some fat. This article popped up in Feedly–it’s a good reminder of an issue I read about from Mark Sisson a couple of years ago, what he called biphasic sleep. I have had this experience of waking up around midnight, especially when I’ve been giving myself more time to be in bed. When it happens, I will listen to a podcast in the dark for an hour. I have no reason to worry about it or label insomnia.

delanceyplace.com 12/18/12 – we used to sleep twice each night

For most of history people have had two periods of sleep each night, with the time in between being perhaps the most calm and relaxing part of their lives. Then came the lightbulb. This unexpected “two sleep” phenomenon was uncovered by historian Roger Ekirch when he began to do research for a history of the night:

Ron Reyes interview

Good interview with Black Flag vocalist, Ron Reyes. I’m looking forward to seeing him sing with Greg Ginn’s version of Black flag when they play in Oakland later this year.

Ron Reyes (Piggy / Red Cross / Black Flag)

There is no modest way to say it. Ron Reyes is a pivotal part of West Coast punk. He played drums in Redd Kross when they were still called Red Cross. He got a Germs Burn directly from The Germs. He cut the vocals for Black Flag’s Jealous Again. He was one of the main subjects in The Decline of We.

Minecraft Realms

For the past year, we’ve been using a Minecraft server running locally. Realms will be nice for anyone who’s less tech savvy.

‘Minecraft’ aims to reel in families, young gamers with new Realms subscription service | The Verge

In an effort to broaden Minecraft’s audience and draw in families and younger gamers, Mojang has announced a new initiative called Minecraft Realms. At its core, Realms is a monthly subscription service that gives players a private, tightly-controlled Minecraftserver, providing “a safe and easy way” for children to enjoy the hugely-popular title. Pricing has yet to be finalized, but Games Industry International suggests it will fall somewhere between $10 and $15. For that fee, players will take ownership of their ownMinecraft world with full control over who else may enter and build alongside them. Thankfully only one person needs to pay for a Realms account, so your friends and family members won’t have to part with any cash to get started — all they’ll need is a copy of the game and an internet connection.

Good questions from Rollins.

Dispatch – Henry Rollins

For the last couple of hours, I have been thinking of the verdict that was reached in what is now known as the Steubenville rape case.
