Eva’s Byte #305 – That Missing Item

My method for grocery shopping is the same one employed for writing. I take the pantser approach. Meaning, I hit the ground running in the aisles without a shopping list, just as I invade blank territory on my computer screen without an outline or storyboard to reference.

Somehow, with all the intricacies of writing a full-blown novel, everything spinning from the windmills of my mind falls into place, page after page, with cohesiveness. I wish I could say the same for my forays inside the supermarket.

Either driving home, or while putting groceries away, I’ll chide myself for that one missing item that never saw the light of day in my shopping cart. This week’s winner—ketchup. I thought it would add pizazz to scrambled eggs. Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m going to put hot sauce on the list I’m composing in my mind for next week’s trip.

Anyway, this week I achieved a milestone in my Contemporary work in progress. I completed Chapter 67, the finale of Part 3. About to draft Chapter 68 as a stepping stone into Part 4, I’ll “scramble” to make sure no stone is left unturned for bridging the past and present.

When I think back to those days of yore when I actually composed a shopping list, I’d still overlook one item. Hence, for me, whether grocery shopping or writing, I’ll take the pantser approach.

*Since no method is foolproof, whatever the method to your madness, may it suit you well.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #304 – You Get What You Need

Recently, as of last Sunday and Monday, I experienced the short-lived anxiety, frustration, and disappointment of registering for a COVID-19 vaccine appointment. The song “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” from the Rolling Stones’ 1969 album, Let it Bleed, came to mind:

You can't always get what you want
But if you try sometime you find
You get what you need

You might say I got my “fair share of abuse” going nowhere fast from 12:01 – 1:00 a.m., and again, from 5:30 – 6:30 a.m. on the 22nd. Locations lagged behind in the rollout, and websites had not been updated to accommodate my age group tier. Trying again, I got what I needed at 9:30 a.m.

Ironically, I can vividly recall a similar frenzy in registering for what I wanted in the spring of 1970 during the second semester of my freshman year at college:

The mad-dash, free-for-all acquisition of getting the classes you wanted started with lining up as a preface to bursting inside Whipple Gym at Rhode Island College. As soon as the proctor allowed a quota of students to enter, you broke rank and scrambled to find the queue that matched up with the sign designating the required course you needed for graduation. With any luck, the section hadn’t filled up yet by the time it was your turn.

Mind you, the process repeated itself for every single course in your load. With so many students left out in the cold, myself included, other sections opened up at a later date. A year that will live in infamy, I didn’t get everything I wanted, but got what I needed in the long run.

In my capacity of writer, I did what was needed for pulling off Chapter 66 of my Contemporary Work in Progress. I’m wending my way through what needs to be done in drafting Chapter 67.

*If you can’t get what you want, may getting what you need be enough.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #303 – Oddities

Inquiring minds never cease in their hunger to acquire more information. In my case, the buck doesn’t stop there. I also enjoy acquiring oddities. Perchance you do too.

Under the influence of my own predilections, peccadilloes, and preferences, I collect them on a need-to-acquire basis.

A jackalope is one such oddity which piqued the curiosity of my inquiring mind. Having stumbled upon the “existence” of a jackrabbit with antelope horns in a short story based on travels along Route 66, I wanted one. Hence, I hunted online for this souvenir and nabbed a critter at Wall Drug Store, a roadside attraction itself, established 1931 in South Dakota.

I’m glad I did because the furry black one I acquired appears to be an endangered species. Instead, I espied a poly resin jackalope statue for $4.99, and a head mount jackalope for $199.00 which sold out, mind you.

In my capacity of a writer, the latest oddity in a string of many I’ve researched for my Contemporary work in progress, is that of the Colt Python 1969 firearm model. Consequently, I reached the butt end of drafting Chapter 66 in Part 3, arriving at 1,156 words.

*May each of us embrace our traits of oddness which foster imagination and creativity.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #302 – The White Stuff

Snow—a lovely to sight to behold, but weighty as gold when you have to remove it from the surfaces on which it adheres.

One of those hardy New Englanders who’s accustomed to the wrath of a Nor’easter, I’ve begun to view the white stuff as my nemesis. Herman Melville’s menacing Moby Dick,
based on the real albino whale called Mocha Dick, comes to mind.

As of late, sightings of the white stuff have occurred at a good clip. In the East Bay area:

Feb. 7 = 7 in.
Feb. 9 = 1 to 3 in.
We’re due for more white stuff on the 14th.

Pragmatic like a true New Englander, weather forecasts of snow heavily influence supermarket runs for bread and milk before we batten down the hatches.

In my capacity of an author, my nemesis of white stuff is in the guise of facing a blank 9 ½ x 11 page. Leaving behind tracks of fresh footprints, I’m blazing a trail inside my Contemporary work in progress along the juncture of Chapter 66.

*Through sheer will and determination, may each of us overcome our nemesis by forging footprints where no one else has gone.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #301 – A Pot Boiler

As opposed to potboiler/pot-boiler: mediocre or poorly written literature produced primarily for financial gain.

My pot boiler is in reference to a rice cooker acquired many years ago, enticed by an article written by the late movie critic, Roger Ebert, who cites its versatility. (“The Pot and How to Use It,” November 2008).

The suggestion of boiling oatmeal in the pot is what sold me. Thus far, it’s the only thing I’ve prepared in the rice cooker which has two buttons: Green = Warm; Red = Cook.

An acquired art, cooking is done purely on a trial-and-error basis.

I pour the contents of 1 ½ packets of brown sugar oatmeal into the pot, add enough water to cover the contents, place the lid on top, then hit the cook button. When I hear the sound of percolating, I stir the oatmeal until it’s the right consistency, and scoop it out of the nonstick pot into a bowl.

Voila!

One of these days, I might heat up a can of soup in the rice cooker.

In my capacity of a writer, and my own harshest critic at that, I take great pains and pride in not producing a potboiler by the time I’m finished with my current Contemporary work in progress. Based on the number of well-written books by Indies that I’ve read and enjoyed, I can vouch they’re not churning out potboilers either.

This week I’m warming up to reach the finish line of Chapter 65, weighing the merit of each word by trial and error.

*Wishing you the best in perfecting your own literary and artistic endeavors.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #300 – The Mindfulness of Words

A writer who agonizes over putting one word in front of the other, I’m celebrating the mindfulness of words in my tricentennial blog.

The writer’s placement of words spreading from sentences to paragraphs and pages has the potential to leave readers mindful of our stories long past the finish line.

My mindfulness shifted, even if for fleeting moments at a time, upon coming across a passage in a magazine which summed up the themes of its stories in single words:

Kindness
Patience
Humor
Grace

In my mind’s eye, these words have a soul all of their own. Any one of us could add more words to this list of spiritual essentials for mindful living. I think these words and others like them are perfect for painting on rocks to remind us of what is important for our well-being.

If the option for personalizing is available when purchasing a gnome to add to my collection, I’m proceeding with mindful words. Thus far: Hope and Believe have made their presence known.

Mindful of making inroads through my Contemporary work in progress, I finished drafting chapter 64 of Part 3 after struggling to find all the right words that would pass muster with my harshest critic: me.

*May each of us persevere in cultivating mindfulness of the higher self as a means of achieving inner peace and harmony.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #299 – The Switcheroo

From coffee to tea…

A diehard iced coffee drinker was I. Dunkin Donuts mocha, to be precise, at the intake of one 13.7-ounce bottle per day. It’s fair to say I looked forward to indulging this small pleasure. However, for health purposes, I’m switching my libation.

Already dedicated to exercising and walking, I’ve become more mindful of increasing my calcium intake. Therefore, I’m cutting down on sodium which accelerates the rate at which calcium is lost from bones. Since one bottle of Dunkin contains 100 mg. of sodium, I purged the fridge and am now a teetotaler who embraces the merits of drinking green tea.

My goal to imbibe one-two cups of green tea per day purportedly has many potential benefits. I’ve listed them, prioritizing my top three health needs: stabilizing cholesterol levels, lowering blood pressure, making bones strong, improving brain function, lowering blood sugar levels, encouraging oral health, reducing body weight, preventing hair loss, reducing the risk of cancer, fighting the aging process, promoting longevity.

As for switching gears in my capacity of a writer, I finished drafting Chapter 63, Part 3 at 1486 words in my Contemporary work in progress. I’m hitting the ground running for drafting Chapter 64, resuming from 108 words.

Wishing you all the best if you’re in the midst of switching lanes, switching off emotions, or switching things up.

Eva’s Byte #298 – Integrity

Merriam-Webster’s primary definition of integrity - 1: firm adherence to a code of especially moral or artistic values: incorruptibility.

From my perspective, this holds true even more so when your code of ethics is at odds with the popular opinion; when you take a stand that puts your own well-being in jeopardy ; when you run the risk of finding yourself ostracized and on the outside looking in.

Whether you’re navigating the minefield of a schoolyard at recess, or negotiating a government session, your integrity is at stake to be true to yourself and do the right thing, while keeping the greater good in mind.

It’s not about reaping perks or praise.

Heaven knows, my parents drummed this ideal into my head. If that wasn’t enough, there were plenty of shows during the Sixties which extolled integrity. Such as: Leave it to Beaver, The Andy Griffith Show, The Rifleman, and Lassie.

This week, in the capacity of a writer, drafting Chapter 63, Part 3 of my Contemporary work in progress, I thought I’d pull a fast one. In a nutshell, without getting into spoilers, my protagonist was about to engage in duplicitous behavior at the behest of a friend who badgered her to do so. Originally, out of compassion, she was going along with all phases of his plan. Somewhere in the midst of writing this scene, she forbade me to follow through because of the integrity I had instilled in her to begin with.

Like the noble characters we create, those possessing integrity don’t bend with prevailing winds, or succumb to pressure. They stand tall in the face of opposition.

*May each of us stay true to ourselves in a world full of contradictions.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.

Eva’s Byte #297 - Crossing the Line

Having crossed the imaginary line bridging the last day of 2020 to the first day of 2021, I’m treading softly. Rather than setting goals which would only raise my anxiety levels to complete them, I’ve chosen to stay the course, letting the chips fall where they may.

Earlier in the week, without planning, I took it upon myself to wash the china and crystal stemware on display in my hutch. From there, I washed the bric-a-brac on the open shelves of a curio cabinet. On a roll, I proceeded to an antique bookcase, and did the same for items arranged on shelves behind the glass door.

While in the process of preparing for filing taxes, I cleaned out desk drawers and other storage units in my office.

As for crossing the line in bridging one chapter to the next of my current WIP, I completed Chapter 62 at 1955 words—after “only” two weeks! Under the brand new Chapter 63 heading, I poured close to 500 words during my brainstorming session. Without any forethought of a deadline in mind, I’ll cross the line for elevating gibberish to a literary work of art.

“In order to be irreplaceable one must always be different.” Coco Chanel

Cross the line when you’re ready to, in your own fashion.

Eva’s Byte #296 – Maybe, Maybe Not!

Are you with me for rounding the bend to 2021, leaving miles of bad roads in 2020 behind us?

Typical for rounding the bend to a New Year, the notion of making resolutions for accomplishing a personal goal or dropping a bad habit.

Maybe. Maybe not.

This year, having already spent plenty of time self-isolating, I’ve worked on areas in need of personal improvement:

I’ve exercised more.

I’m super organized.

I’ve saved more money by staying home.

I’ve read more, having surpassed my pledge to read/review 25 books in the Goodreads Challenge. I can kiss this year good-bye with 31 books under my belt.

If I thought I could increase my word output by the end of each daily writing session to further advance my Contemporary WIP, I’d resolve to do it. But, it’s not how I roll as my own harshest critic. So, schlepping to the finish line, I am rounding the bend of Part 3, chapter 62 @ 1392 words thus far.

For now, I’m huddling under the mushroom cloud of this apocalyptic pandemic. When herd immunity from COVID-19 is achieved through widespread vaccination, I resolve to live life to the fullest gallivanting, and spending time with family. No two maybes about it!

May each of us round the bend to the New Year with brighter prospects looming in our horizons along unpaved roads ahead.

My sincere appreciation if you’ve read this far.
