This is something called Crown Flash. It appears above thunderclouds sometimes when all the angles are right. I mention it briefly in one of my published stories. There is no doubt a certain number of UFO sightings are due to it.

So, after feeding the Kookaburras this morning on the back porch, I drive back from the P.O. this afternoon, pause for the herd of ducks and ducklings crossing the road, a bit further up wait for three Grey Kangaroos to hop out of the way, and become immersed in a cloud of King Parrots just before reaching the driveway. Then at the door I scare a Skink off the mat.
