#SaturdaySpotlight: Linda Rondeau & Fiddler's Fling

Good Morning!

Today our guest is a fellow Pelican Book Group author with her latest non-PBG release, Fiddler's Fling.

Restoration and reconciliation are recurring themes in RONDEAU’s literary works. Although currently residing in Jacksonville Florida, the author spent thirty years in the Adirondack region during her long career in human services.
When not writing, she enjoys theater, hiking, golfing, and is considering taking up a new hobby: biking.
Readers may visit her web site at www.lindarondeau.com, her blog, Salt and Light, or find her on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google Plusand Goodreads.
Engaged to a wealthy rising political star, a driven social worker returns to her small-town roots.
With her wedding to Robert Ashworth weeks away, Jolene Murdock receives a call from Dwight Etting, her estranged father’s junior partner and her former boyfriend. The business is crumbling and her father is dying.
Compelled to visit in spite of Robert’s objections, Jolene wonders if reconciliation is possible given her father’s hatred of all things Ashworth. And there was Dwight. How could she work side-by-side with him and not reveal her secret sin?
To complicate matters her father wants her to play a duet with him in the upcoming Essex County Fiddlers Fling; however, her fiddle was among the many things she left behind when she abandoned Brookside.
More than a romance.
Set in the beautiful Adirondack Mountains, Fiddlers Fling depicts the struggle of the human spirit to find absolution in good deeds rather than accept the unconditional forgiveness God offers the repentant heart.
EXCERPT:
PROLOGUE Jolene Murdock hopped around her room like a two-year-old at Christmas. No small thing to be offered a job at the most prestigious law firm in Albany. The cell slipped from her grasp. “Oh, spinach,” she shrieked, emulating how Eleanor Roosevelt might have said it. She caught her lifeline, the portal to her world, a split-second before it met a watery end in her fish tank. On the other end, Robert Ashworth clicked impatience. “I sense you have reservations?” “No. Not at all.” Calm down, girl. “Tell me more.” “You’ll head up our charitable foundation, oversee our donations, arrange fundraisers for recipients, and be an ambassador of good will. Your social-work degree will be an asset.” “I’m not a certified social worker…yet. I only have my bachelor’s degree.”“You can get your Master’s in Albany. My father’s firm will pay for your tuition. Take a few seconds if you need to.” She’d already made her decision. Instead of revealing her giddiness, she took the allowed few seconds to examine the downs, if there were any besides the fact her father would never approve. The strangeness of it all should be considered. Why did Robert’s father want to hire her, Jolene Murdock, a simple girl from Brookside? Granted, she’d graduated with honors from Vassar, no small feat. And she was the daughter of the Democratic Chair for Essex County. She’d been a protégé of Robert’s mother since the summer following high school graduation—a woman who bolstered Jolene’s confidence like the mother Jolene never had. So…why not her? Maybe she really was the perfect choice for the position. But what about Robert? Did he want Jolene to be hired, or had his mother put him up to it? He was three years older than she, and they’d been an item her freshman year, in spite of her father’s insistence she not date older boys. Daddy needn’t have worried. Once Robert took off for Harvard, she saw him only a few times, generally at some political function and always with his mother.  The silence grew awkward, and the sounds of drumming fingers carried over Robert’s phone into Jolene’s ear. “I need an answer. What do I tell my father?”“Tell him I accept.” “Then pack your bags and get on the train to Albany tomorrow. You start Monday.”

Fiddler's Fling can be purchased at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
Hope you enjoyed the spotlight, see ya next week for Tuesday Treasure, Thursday Thoughts and Saturday Spotlight.
Until then...take care and God Bless. PamT

#ThursdayThoughts: Random Ramblings

Good Morning!

Today is one of those random ramblings days...cause I just have no idea what to talk about. This feature is normally about something to think about so....

How about reading a good book?

I recently read two: Sweet Salt Air by Barbara Delinsky and Being in Balance by Dr. Wayne Dyer.

Yeah two different ends of the reading spectrum I know...one fiction the other non...but that's me.

I love to read and variety is the spice of life.

What are your reading preferences?

I'd love to hear from you!

Leave a comment and at least one lucky person will win a copy of their choice of my books!

#TuesdayTreasure: Guest post by Diane Burton!

Good Morning and Welcome to the first Tuesday Treasure of 2016!

Today we welcome Diane Burton back to our blog to share with us something she treasures....

What I Treasure
When Pam asked me to write about something I treasure, the first thing that popped in my head was my family, especially my three grandchildren. As I write in the dedications to my books, they always make me smile. Holding a baby is a great de-stressor. For the past three weeks, I’ve been getting in a lot of holding with the eight-month-old and losing a lot of stress. When her mama brings her downstairs and she sees me, her eyes light up and she grins broadly. Then she holds her arms out to me. That just makes my heart swell. In a little over two weeks, we’ll have to leave, so I’m treasuring every moment.
But when we leave this little one, we have two older grandkids waiting for us—especially, to celebrate Christmas with them. The almost-six-year-old always races across the room to greet me with such enthusiasm I have to make sure I’m holding on to something, or I’ll get bowled over. Meanwhile, the eight-year-old patiently waits her turn. Since she’s getting so tall, I don’t have to bend over too far for her hugs and kisses.
One thing I enjoy sharing with the grandchildren is my love of reading and writing. With the baby, we’re still at the reading stage. Holding her in the rocker and reading Dr. Seuss reminds me of times when the older grandchildren and my own kids were young. While I love reading to the older ones, they enjoy writing their own stories with the help of myStoryMaker from The Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, a fun interactive computer program. They tell the story and I type—a good division of labor. After they finish the story, we always print it out so they can show their parents. We play card games with them, too, like my grandmother did with me and my siblings. No matter what we do, it’s time well spent. Time when I put aside my own writing, household chores, reading or television shows and just enjoy being together.
Without our children and their spouses, I wouldn’t have my three treasures. More importantly, the love of my life for the past forty-three years made all this possible. That’s why I say my family is my dearest treasure.
My latest release is a cozy mystery featuring a female private investigator. The Case of the Fabulous Fiancé is the second Alex O’Hara novel.
Blurb
She’s at it again. Alex O’Hara just can’t say no to a new investigation. What do a 45-year-old boyfriend, a deadbeat dad, and a teenage runaway have in common? All new cases. With phone and internet problems, no receptionist, and her own boyfriend in the wind, Alex has no idea how she’ll manage. But the question for the past three months is why did Nick disappear. Is this the end of O’Hara & Palzetti?
Excerpt
I picked up the pen before looking at Nora Finley. Even though I was in the middle of a major case, I never turned down a prospective client. At least, not right away. I’d hear her out and then decide.“What can I do for you?”Her expression completely changed. The high-powered exec disappeared. In its place, caution and . . . vulnerability. “Ellen VanderVeen said I could trust you.”I smiled. Ellen and I had been friends since college. That girl had more fashion sense in her baby finger than I did in my entire body.“Yes, I know Ellen.”“She said you helped her investigate her fiancé.” I nodded. She hesitated and appeared to rethink what she was doing in a private investigator’s office. Quickly, she came to a conclusion. “I’d like you to do the same.”“You want me to vet your fiancé?”“He’s not my fiancé. Yet.”She didn’t explain any further, so I asked, “Why? Do you suspect something?”“No. Oh, goodness, no.” She pursed her lips before continuing. “My father left me a prosperous financial firm plus a sizeable inheritance. I am not saying that to brag but to explain my concerns. In my younger days, I was, uhm, taken advantage of. I need to be sure this man truly loves me—me, not my money.”Although nobody would ever mistake me for an heiress, I understood her caution. “I am almost forty years old,” she said. “I want to have children before I’m too old.”Again, I understood. I’d recently passed a landmark birthday. The big Three-Oh. Rather than worry about kids, though, I devoted myself to my business. After a rocky start, I was on a pretty even keel. Plenty of work. Not enough time. But I did have plenty of time before settling down with kids. And a husband, of course. I’m kind of old-fashioned like that. I’d thought Nick might— Don’t go there.“Ma’am, if you’d called for an appointment, I could have saved you a trip. I do not have time to devote to your case.”A crestfallen Nora Finley stared at me, her mouth slightly open. I guess nobody ever turned her down. While hers might be interesting, I didn’t have a good feeling about this case. A client might want the lowdown on a prospective mate—as I’d discovered before—but they often resented the bearer of bad news. Of course, the client could be grateful if the news was good, like my friend Ellen.“I will double your usual retainer.”“It isn’t a matter of money—” Although money never hurt. “—I’m in the middle of a large case that is taking up all of my time.”“How soon will you finish?” No longer disappointed, she looked calculating.God save me from rich people who think everyone should drop what they’re doing to attend to them.“Three weeks, minimum.” “Good. I will be out of the country for the next four weeks. You may finish your present case then check into Clyde Wilson.”Well, shit. I mean, shoot. I was trying to break my bad habit of swearing. I had misgivings about this woman. Demanding, she was going to be difficult to work with. She exuded the power that came from old money. Power that expected everyone to drop everything and do her bidding. But then I’d had difficult clients before and managed them. I could probably wrap up the fraud investigation in a couple of weeks. I’d given myself a cushion when I’d told her three. Were my misgivings about her enough to turn down double my retainer?I drew the pad closer to me. “Tell me about this man. Clyde Wilson?”That better not be a smug look on her face.

#SaturdaySpotlight: Brave, Strong and True by Dr. Kate Hendricks Thomas

Good Morning and Welcome to the very first edition of Saturday Spotlight, 2016!

I pray your holiday celebrations were safe and that you are BLESSED in the year to come.

Today I'm happy to bring your attention to a previously unknown (to me) author and book.....

Right now, we are losing more veterans to suicide than to combat.
Charleston, SC – November 2015 – New release, Brave, Strong, True: The Modern Warrior's Battle for Balance (Innovo Publishing Group) by author Kate Hendricks-Thomas. “I’m a pretty decisive person with limited ability to ask for help and zero trouble-taking risks; there was a time I could have become one of those [suicide] statistics,” says Thomas, also a U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in Iraq in 2005.
When the country called, our military men and women answered. Brave, Strong, and True challenges us as citizens to do more than say, "Thank you for your service," offering us the chance to understand and connect with our nation's veterans by becoming part of the reintegration solution. Right now, what we hear repeatedly about veterans' mental health isn't always positive and is often far from accurate. Personalizing the issues and advocating for specific, proven protocols, a Marine-turned-PhD calls for a radical shift in the way we talk about health for our military. To promote real wellness, healing, and connection for those who served requires a focus on the resilient leadership potential present in our nation's veteran community. Resilience can be trained and cultivated in all of us, and this book will show you how.
Brave, Strong, True: The Modern Warrior's Battle for Balance is a practical call to health for America’s modern military warriors and those who support them. With a unique blend of personal narratives and current research, author Dr. Kate Hendricks Thomas explores this question: what if we could train America’s service members to succeed in mental battles as we do in physical ones? This book unpacks the possibility of mental fitness training programs that shift the paradigm from treatment to resilience.

In an accessible, inspiring, and powerful way, Dr. Kate outlines strategies - including social support, self-care, and spiritual practice - for readers to meet the challenge of living purposeful lives. Her research provides a wealth of knowledge and practical guidance for veterans, their family members, military commands, mental health professionals, and everyday citizens who can identify with the title “warrior.”
"Combining the latest research on military mental health with deft, authentic storytelling, Kate Hendricks Thomas invites us to think critically about how we typically discuss healing for veterans. Quite simply, faith matters. With a perspective informed by her own combat experiences, she makes a powerful case for the relationship between religion and health. She has written a call to action that is both smart and brave."
—Harold G. Koenig, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences & Associate Professor of Medicine and Director, of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke University Medical Center
Innovo Publishing LLC (November 2, 2015)Paperback: 170 pages; Language:EnglishISBN-10: 1613143095    ISBN-13: 978-1613143094
Seems like a timely message and wonderful gift for those we know who may be suffering as many of our soldiers do.

Hope you enjoyed it!
See you next week for Tuesday Treasures, Thursday Thoughts and of course, Saturday Spotlight!

#ThursdayThoughts: Guest Post by Janet Lynn!

Happy New Year!

I know it's only New Year's Eve, but I pray you are Blessed and Prosperous in 2016.

Today we welcome back to our blog, author Janet Lynn. You'll remember her from her Saturday Spotlight and Tuesday Treasure posts earlier this month, so without much further ado, let's see what she's thinking about....

Since the internet did not reveal much about Molokai'i in 1955, we took a trip to the Hawaiian Islands to research our novel, STRANGE MARKINGS.  The island is accessible by small planes like our Cessna 2088B which sat 9 people plus the two man crew. The turboprop plane hit air pockets and bounced around until we landed at a remote airport with a small terminal. Talk about Indiana Jones! We picked our luggage up off the tarmac and walked over to the car rental building. The small terminal seemed remote enough until we drove to Kaunakakai the largest town on the island with a population of 3,425.

Our rented waterfront Condo was beautiful and modern with full facilities. The three days of research on the island took us to uninhabited hills, tropical forests and abandoned shacks. Candid interviews with the locals revealed the island has not changed much since the 50's. In fact there was still no AC on the island except for the medical center, post office  and the library. This made our job easier to set our characters in a place where time stood still.

In other words, we walked the places our characters would have walked and saw the things they would've seen in 1955. This time capsule was amazingly surreal. So, when we wrote the novel, all I had to do was close my eyes to sense, smell and feel Molokai'i in 1955.

The Pacific breezes blow many things in from the ocean, this time its power, greed, and murder. At the dawn of the television age in 1955, Skylar Drake is called to identify the remains of a fellow movie stuntman found buried in a shallow grave. While there, he is shown mysterious wounds and strange tattoos on two additional bodies.

A wealthy Bel Air matron sends her enticing niece to enlist Drake’s help in locating a missing nephew. The search takes him back to pre-statehood Hawaii where he stopped off on his way to the hell of the Korean War. Unexplained deaths, politics and superstitious locals turn the tropical paradise into a nightmare where nothing is what it seems and no one can be trusted.

Strange Markings  can be purchased at Amazon
JANET ELIZABETH LYNN and Will Zeilinger are a husband and wife and authors in their own right. Janet has eight novels, Will has four novels. They decided to get together to write noir mysteries set in 1955. STRANGE MARKINGS is the second. The Skylar Drake Murder Mysteries series. They each bring separate talents to the writing team. Getting together to research, interview, and appearances, they complement each other. Traveling the world has given much insight, a long list of friends and a large basket of hotel shampoo and conditioner.

#TuesdayTreasure: #HolidayRecipeandRomance with Diana Rubino

Good Morning and Welcome to the last Tuesday Treasure of 2015!

This is the time of year most of us reflect on the months past and plan to do better/different in the future. That's all good and well, but this year, why not make a list of small changes instead of huge goals that you've made over and over and not accomplished?

For instance...instead of losing XX # of pounds, how about exercising 15 minutes a day. This can be anything....jumping jacks, marching in place, stretching...anything to get moving. Another idea I heard about was to take an empty jar and every day or week, write a short note of the good thing(s) that happened, then at this time next year, reflect on those. This is a wonderful way to remember to be grateful and to acknowledge the good things God does for you.

I'm thinking I might do this!

Another wonderful idea would be to try something new every week or month.... take an art class or sewing class or try out a new recipe.

With that in mind, I bring to you, Diana Rubino with another recipe from her book, Around the World in 80 Meals; The Best of Cruise Ship Cusine which can be purchased at Amazon.

Puff Pastry
Ingredients3 cups unbleached all-purpose flour1 cup plain bleached cake flour6½ sticks unsalted butter, chilled1½ teaspoons salt1 cup ice waterInstructionsDice butter sticks into ½ -inch cubes.Put flour in mixing bowl.Add butter and salt.Blend flour and butter together until butter broken into small lumps.Blend in water and mix until dough clumps roughly together but butter pieces remain the same.On a lightly floured work surface, quickly push, pat and roll dough to form a 12-inch by 18-inchrectangle.Lightly flour top of dough.Using a pastry sheet, flip the bottom of the rectangle up over the middle.Flip the top of the rectangle down to cover it.Lift the dough away from the work surface using a pastry sheet.Clean the work surface and lightly.Return the dough to the work surface. Set it with the top flap to your right.Lightly flour top of the dough, and push, pat and roll again into a rectangle.Repeat folding as above. (Each "roll-and-fold" operation is called a "turn".Repeat process 2 more times. (4 "turns" in total). After the last "turn" you will see flakes of butter scattered below the surface on the dough.Wrap dough in plastic wrap and place in a plastic bag.Refrigerate 40 minutes.Repeat “turn” process 2 more times.Let dough rest 30 minutes.
Dough is ready for baking when rubbery and difficult to roll.
Sounds yummy!
While you're trying out her recipes, check out Diana's latest release, From Here to Fourteenth Street which can be purchased from The Wild Rose Press  Amazon Kindle  Amazon Paperback
It's 1894 on New York's Lower East Side. Irish cop Tom McGlory and Italian immigrant Vita Caputo fall in love despite their different upbringings. Vita goes from sweatshop laborer to respected bank clerk to reformer, helping elect a mayor to beat the Tammany machine. While Tom works undercover to help Ted Roosevelt purge police corruption, Vita's father arranges a marriage between her and a man she despises. As Vita and Tom work together against time and prejudice to clear her brother and father of a murder they didn't commit, they know their love can survive poverty, hatred, and corruption. Vita is based on my great grandmother, who left grade school to become a self-made businesswoman and politician, wife and mother.

#SaturdaySpotlight is on Lillian Duncan and No Home for the Holidays!

Merry Christmas!

Thursday, we #sharedthejoy with Christmas titles and other books that are on sale through the holidays. Well today is another wonderful Christmas story by returning author, Lillian Duncan!

You've gotten a sneak peek into Lillian's book when she visited us for Tuesday Treasures and Thursday Thoughts but today you'll get an even better look at No Home for the Holidays !

Unlike the Prodigal Son, Chloe Sullivan knows she can’t go home for the Christmas holidays or ever—not if she wants to stay alive.
She’s resigned to the fact she must stay in hiding to keep herself and her family safe. Lonely and desperate for God’s presence, she’s drawn to a nearby church.
Ex-FBI agent turned preacher, Colton Douglas, mistakenly identifies Chloe as the person breaking into local churches. A midnight chase ensues that ends with him snapping her photo. When the photo goes public he learns more about the mystery woman than he bargained for. . .

And that changes everything!
EXCERPT:
Colton Douglas huddled in the dark while the icy wind swirled.
If the weather got worse, he wouldn’t be able to take pictures. With the falling snow and the star shining bright above the Nativity, it would make an awesome picture to post on the church website. So far, the photos hadn’t turned out as pretty as what he could see.
He rubbed his hands together in an effort to keep warm. The wind chill factor was already below zero. He considered going back to his warm cozy house to sit in front of the fireplace, but insomnia had crept in once again. Instead of lying in bed trying not to think of things better forgotten, he’d decided to get up. A glance at the Nativity had brought him out to capture the perfect photo.
He held up the camera and snapped several times and shivered as a strong gust of wind assaulted him. Colton pulled the scarf tighter around his neck, then held his hands up to his mouth so he could warm them with his breath. He wiggled them around, barely able to feel his fingers. Five more minutes and then he’d call it a night whether he got the right picture or not. Waiting outside in the dark reminded him of his days as an FBI agent. The familiar pit in his stomach jolted, inviting him back into the darkness.
Colton refused to jump in.
Those days were behind him. God had other plans for him that didn’t include carrying a gun. These days he carried a Bible.
Colton stamped his feet to bring back feeling. Brutal was the only way to describe the weather this winter—and it was only December! What would January be like? He snapped a few more shots but still wasn’t happy. Maybe it would be better with the flash off. To give that ethereal quality he was looking for.
Snap.
Perfect! The star shone but with a hazy quality. He sent the photo to his social media sites and to the church website. Pleased that he’d captured the essence of the season, he scanned the area, taking in the lovely scene one more time.
A shadowed figure darted near the church steps.

#TuesdayTreasure: Guest post by Janet Elizabeth Lynn!

Good Morning!

Ready or not, Christmas is only a couple of days away so it is with great pleasure I bring you today's Treasure....a special post by returning guest Janet Elizabeth Lynn.

My husband, Will, and I joined forces to write a 1955 Noir series, The Skylar Drake Murder Mysteries.             Married for 43 years, I wasn't sure if we could make it work since our writing styles were so different. I presented the idea to him and he loved it.        STRANGE MARKINGS, our second book in the series is now available, and we are starting our third DESERT ICE.             I think we work well together because we understand that this venture is not a battle of egos, wills, or talent but a goal of telling a great story. And we each bring special talents, foresight and memories that make the stories work.
I will always treasure the time we spend, researching, meetings, editing and sleepless nights working on the book. Then finally holding the book in our hands and high fiving each other. Partnering is a great idea - I'm glad I invented it!!
Wow...43 years together is certainly something to treasure! Congratulations on you and Will's success in marriage and writing.

Here's a peek at Janet and Will's latest book, Strange Markings which can be purchased at Amazon....

Hope you enjoyed today's Treasure! I have a very special post for you Thursday but Janet will be back on the 30th for Thursday Thoughts. Hope to see you then!
Until later...take care, God Bless and remember.... Jesus is the reason for EVERY season.

Hot agents on explosive cases in the FBI Heat series: For San Diego’s elite FBI agents, risking their lives is standard procedure when it comes to capturing the city’s most dangerous criminals—but falling in love is the greatest risk of all.
Catching bad guys in San Diego’s underworld isn’t just FBI Special Agent Ben Alfren’s job, it’s his life. He doesn’t have time for a serious relationship, doesn’t want one either. So when he meets his sexy new neighbor, Amber Jollett, he has nothing more in mind than unwinding with a glass of wine, a romantic walk on the beach…and maybe a hot fling.
But Amber is more than he bargained for. Hunted by an obsessed ex-boyfriend, the fiercely independent nurse chooses fight over flight for the chance at a future with her hot, blue-eyed neighbor. When she gets caught up in Ben’s plans to rescue five kidnapped women, their lives get entangled and their attraction flares into passion. But they’ll learn that in this dangerous game of cat and mouse, real love can save—or doom—them . . .
EXCERPT:
The man in the gray hoodie was watching her. Amber Jollett couldn’t see his face, but he was the right height and build. Even from the opposite street corner, the intensity of his stare bored into her. She shivered despite the sunny morning.
Her focus never wavered as she slid behind two people. The man’s head turned with her movement.
The traffic light changed, and the crowd surged forward. Amber’s hand dug into her purse until it gripped reassuring metal. Weaving between bodies, she moved to the outside edge to put as much distance as possible between her and the man before the other pedestrians passed on the street. With each step, her heart beat faster.
Halfway across, the man reached up, pulled back the hood…and smiled. Straight black hair. Almond-shaped eyes. Asian features.
Not him.
Amber’s knees went weak with relief.
Not him. Not this time.
A car horn blared. She jumped and spun around to find a taxi idling a few feet away, its driver gesturing impatiently for her to get out of the way. Waving an apology, she scurried across the street. She found a spot out of the pedestrian flow next to the corner of a building. She needed a moment to quiet her nerves.
She braced her hands on the knees of her pastel pink nurse’s scrubs, inhaled deep breaths, and released them slowly. Fear began to fade as calm returned.
Damn you, Jeremy Nelson. I want my life back.
Amber grimaced and closed her eyes. It was starting all over again. Two years had passed since she’d broken up with her obsessed boyfriend, but he continued to stalk her. Restraining orders and calls to law enforcement had proved useless. Now she alone was responsible for her safety. She’d lived in Coronado, across the bay from San Diego, for only two months. But two or three months was the amount of time it normally took for Jeremy to find her. From now on, she would have to be on constant alert. The worst part was imagining him wearing every hoodie, hiding in every shadow, or following in every vehicle. Usually, she didn’t wait for an actual sighting—that would be too late. No, she couldn’t hesitate. Once her instincts told her he was closing in, she had to move on. She cringed. How much longer will I be hunted?
