The Fifty Worst and Fifty Best Books
An idiosyncratic list compiled by the editors of The Intercollegiate Review: A Journal of Scholarship and Opinion, Wilmington, Delaware, Vol 35, No 1, Fall 1999.
Only non-fiction books are listed. YMMV, so may mine.

Identity Politics
Here is something once said by SCOTUS nominee Sotomayor:
"I would hope that a wise Latina woman, with the richness of her experiences, would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."

Here is something once said by TV character "Archie Bunker" in dialogue with "Meathead." The Meathead has just bemoaned a political flier for a local election slate:
Archie: What's the matter with this? I call this representative government. You've go

SCOTUS
Apparently the media emphasis will be on nominee Sotomayer's "compelling life story" rather than on her past judicial rulings. Maybe the whole nomination thing can be covered on Lifetime or O. A blogger calling herself the Anchoress muses on the following dichotomies:
One media source has already gushed this is the first up-from-poverty SCOTUS nominee.
Clarence Thomas is down the memory hole, but surely we remember how his up-from-poverty compelling life story was trumpeted by a sympathe

The Rise of Irrationalism
The following gem was spotted on a site in which various folks debated one another on the silly issue of whether "science" has eliminated the need for "God." (The silliest of all was by C. Hitchens, which simply consisted of a series of ad hominem attacks on biologist Kenneth Miller.)
The author in this case is one Steven Pinker, who claims to be a scientist, but who is actually a psychologist.(*)

Quote of the Day
There is something inherently eerie about this one:
On average, each molecule in the air experiences fifty collisions in less than a microsecond. But the accurate prediction of the trajectory of an air molecule after fifty successive collisions must take into account the gravitational effects of the electrons at the edge of the observable universe.John W. Hall
