1. In general, effects are small. So you need a lot of statistical power
That means you need a large sample sizes and information on possible confounders – things that can change the results being reported, if they are not

The September issue of Analog just showed up today. [September? Go figure.:] In its "In Times to Come" feature, it reports that the cover story for the October issue [on sale, July 28:] will be my very own "Where the Winds are All Asleep," an Irish Pub story which starts with the Chordettes version of Mister Sandman and ends up with Babylonian cosmology. The perceptive among you will realize that, given the waterfall in the background, the ship is actually heading down the river, not up.
