Expert in Process Plant Layout and Water Features
I've taken it easy this week taking a few days off for a spa break in the northeast. Naturally the water features interested me a little too much....
I've completed a couple of articles in the remainder of the week on Process Plant Layout for Kirk-Othmer, as well as one for Expert Witness Magazine on best practice in troubleshooting/ site visits for expert witness engagements.

International Expert Witness Meeting of Experts Sludge Treatment
I had a meeting of experts of sorts earlier this week on an expert witness job to discuss my requests for information. It was … interesting. That's probably as much as I should say about that.
Other than that, dealing with a number of enquiries for new work, and progressing the dictionary. This bit of it is really dull, but has to be done before I can get on to the more fun bit...

Expert Witness Engineer Water and Sewage Issues
I'm still awaiting the judgment for the case I appeared in court as an expert in a few weeks ago, but I have a live overseas expert witness job to keep me busy, alongside progressing with the dictionary of chemical engineering I am presently writing.

Expert Witness Chemical Engineer Water and Sludge Treatment
Expert witness work is continuing, sludge treatment in the Middle East being the key job at present. Other than that, talking about a new bread and butter job in Europe, and some training further afield.
Work on the dictionary also continuing. This early stage is incredibly dull, but it has to be done, albeit not more than 1h per day...

Sean Moran Chemical Engineer IChemE Book An Applied Guide to Process and Plant Design
My last IChemE book, "An Applied Guide to Process and Plant Design" seems to be selling well. I might be helping that Amazon are selling it at 60% of list price. I had to drop my own price on eBay. to match them, though Amazons don't come signed by the author.
I've spent a lot of the week writing an article for Process Industry Informer, where I now have a regular column, as well as a couple on plant layout and siting for Kirk-Othmer. I've also been doing the tiresome but necessary task of reviewing competing chemical engineering dictionaries. It has made clear to me the importance of proof reading, and knowing what you don't know. There are a lot of dodgy definitions, and even some misspellings. There is also of course a lot of irrelevant academic nonsense.
My writing methodology has up to nine stages of proof reading before I send to the publisher, and maybe three more after that. Halfway through I send it out in small sections to a large number of other practitioners in a wide range of industries all around the world. Even then they aren't perfect, but they are as good as I can make them with the resources available. This is precisely like engineering design. As good as possible, under the circumstances. With skill and experience, this is better than good enough.

Cross Examination Expert Witness Water Process Design Engineer Package Sewage Treatment Plant
I was in court in London last week, giving evidence in a trial to do with the specification, design, operation and maintenance of a packaged sewage treatment plant in a commercial setting, and being cross-examined on my expert report. Interesting as ever. I've still got another expert witness job to do with industrial effluent treatment going in the Middle East, I'll probably need a site visit soon.
In the meantime, I'm off to Belgium today, looking to pick up a bit of work over there.

Process and Plant Design
The second edition of "An Applied Guide to Process and Plant Design" made its way to Amazon.co.uk yesterday. I'm very proud of it. This was my first book, and though there was nothing wrong with the first edition, I have learned more about writing books since I wrote it, which I have incorporated into the new version.

Expert Witness: Court Appearance / Cross-examination
I'm in the High Court in London next week as an expert witness. Not that many cases proceed to court, they are mostly settled before then. I keep current with training for court appearances and cross examination, but I'm always glad of more practical experience in the area.
Normally I produce an advisory or Part 35 compliant report, and sometimes there's a meeting of experts, but only rarely does it involve a court appearance, still less frequently on in the High Court.
It'll be my first appearance there and it's bound to be interesting. I also submitted an advisory report
this week for an overseas expert witness job.
The week after next I'll be in Belgium, bidding for a bit of real engineering work.

Expert Witness Industrial and Commercial Effluent and Sludge Treatment
Things have quietened down a bit now that my work in the Netherlands has come to an end.
I've still got a couple of expert witness jobs on the books and a spot of troubleshooting, but there is time to work on my backlog of articles and new book.
I'm due to give evidence in court in a couple of weeks for one of the expert witness jobs. It'll be my first time doing this in London, so should be interesting.
