Happy Guy Fawkes Day
Fifth of November, 1605, a group of Catholic conspirators, including Guy Fawkes, tried to blow up Parliament when James I was opening the new session. The king was a staunch Protestant. The plot failed, and ever since Britain has celebrated its failure with bonfires and fireworks.

Halloween
Here's a blog post I wrote for Halloween, about the very few times I've used the supernatural in my books http://bloodredpencil.blogspot.com/2015/10/ghoulies-and-ghosties.html

Where I'm writing about
I'm working on the next Cornish mystery at present. Here are some scenes from Bodmin Moor, where Eleanor and Megan are searching for two missing friends--in thick fog!

UK Kindle apologies
I've heard that the UK Kindle edition of Superfluous Women is really badly formatted. My apologies to everyone who's bought it. I've notified the publisher and hope they'll soon rectify it, and that you'll be able to download an update free.I was going to say in the meantime please complain to Little, Brown, who took over my UK publisher, Constable--but I've just looked and their site is down :-(
Could someone who has the US Kindle edition please let me know whether it's ok?

Winter Garden Mystery news
The Winter Garden Mystery, the second Daisy Dalrymple book, will be reissued in trade paperback next March, with a new cover. The art is a huge improvement over the original hardcover, I think you'll agree.
Previous covers: the original
UK edition
Audio and Polish translation
+ 3 German editions!
(There's also a large print version, but the cover is very plain.)

Real people
Interesting meeting at Art and the Vineyard yesterday. Several years ago, I was asked to give a character in my next book the name of the person who bid highest at an auction in aid of the Eugene Opera (disclosure: I'm a classical music fan but don't care for opera). The winning bid was $800, a woman who want her husband's name used. Turned out his name was Polish, which made for complications, but I got him into Valley of the Shadow as a WWII Polish refugee--you may have wondered where Skipper Tom Kulick came from! (I had asked about him and learned he was in the US Coast Guard).Yesterday, the Kulicks came to the Oregon authors booth to see me, They were very happy with the way I wrote Tom in, brought copies to be signed, and asked if I'd be willing to attend a lunch for 12 opera supporters for this year's fund-raising. I'm still not keen on opera, but what could I say? I'll do anything for a free lunch (well, almost anything... wink emoticon
Hope they can find 12 people willing to pay to have lunch with me!
