RIP to one of my very favorite teachers, Gary Meyer, who died...
RIP to one of my very favorite teachers, Gary Meyer, who died today. He was one of the best teachers an artist could have. He was in institution.
You will be missed, Gary 🙏
ONE STORY I wanted to share, which was an amazing feather in his cap in his illustrious career, is that he was one of the storyboard artists who boarded the entire bombing run scene in Star Wars: A New Hope. He actually brought the boards in to share with the class and we all surrounded the pieces realizing we were staring at pieces of cinematic history. Unfortunately, someone had stolen all the boards from the room when we all had left the room for a 20 minute break. Gary was angry and devastated and we were all heartbroken for him but didn’t know what else to do. The very next week he brought in more work to share with the class and he said, “Don’t steal this one please.” Even after one of his most cherished possessions was stolen from him he still kept on giving because he cared about our interests. He cared so much for all of us and he led with his heart. ❤
ANOTHER fun story he told us was when his friend/legendary concept artist Syd Mead came to speak at the school. During a presentation Gary teasingly called him “Hot Pants” because he used to come to school in neon shorts every day. Syd laughed and said, “No one has called me that in over 30 years!”

I spent all morning on Google Maps tracking down this park in Vienna where I took this picture of this building from back in 1989 AND I FOUND IT. ( FYI, unorganized 13 year old me labeled it “An After Dinner Park” 💪🏼 )
