RIRI! RIHANNA! IRONHEART! CREATION! JOY!

Hey everybody,

I am sub-stacking to you fresh from the world premiere of BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER. I left my house and put on adult clothes! That deserves a newsletter!

I was invited to the proceedings because Mike Deodato and I co-created the character IRONHEART, who is prominently featured in the movie.

I am not going to spoil the movie for you at any level other than to say that it’s one of the best movies of the year and I am very, very happy to be in the mix at all. Dominique Thorne is fantastic as Riri!

I don’t go to a lot of events like this. They are VERY cool. I just don’t think I’m wired for it. But this one seemed special. This was something I could take my daughters to. I was right. It was an outstanding celebration of excellence.

But let me tell you about this one highlight that made me immediately think of this Substack. In this room full of really famous people: musicians, actors, filmmakers, designers, in walks… Rihanna. Yes! Rihanna. She sat three rows behind us. When she walked in, the room shook.

Obviously, YEARS ago, I named Riri Williams AFTER Rihanna. Why? That’s what Riri’s mother would name her. Why? Read the book :)

But in a million, billion years, I could never conjure a future in which Ironheart would then star in one of the biggest movie franchises of all time and that Rihanna would contribute to the soundtrack in a significant way.

I still can’t believe it.

I immediately thought: I am so glad that we are doing this Substack where we talk about creating things.

I want anyone who wants it to have the feeling that I had last night and so so so many other times in my life. I want anyone who wants it to be able to roll up their metaphorical or actual sleeves and create stuff.

I want you to feel whats it’s like to just put your stuff out in the world and see what happens next.

I have had so many amazing— even outlandish— experiences with the stuff I have helped create. I mean, look! I met Michael Gaydos!!

So I am THRILLED we have the first part of CREATION up. Its a deep look into the creation of Jessica Jones.

Those of you who follow me on the Twitter hellscape know that I have recently fallen into a big deep How Did This Get Made hole.
