Cake, books, and friends!

A chocolate eyeball cake!! What's not to love?! AND made by the manager of the store! (Did I mention that I love MG?)
And all the people who came out were equally awesome. Thank you so much. They asked a lot of great questions--some I could, and even some I couldn't answer. (What on earth am I describing here? How big a piece of cake I'm going for?)

It was a great night with great friends who ventured the traffic (and the start of the school year) and I really appreciate all who came (and those who were there in spirit : ) Thank you!

Isn't that a cool shirt that Mysterious Galaxy has? The necessities of life!
And last, but certainly not least, librarian goddess, Peggy Hodge came and brought me a little surprise for my newest little reader:

Yes, Peggy, she is!
Soon I will be hitting the road for The Pen Fatale Tour! Two weeks, twelve cities, loads of fun! I will post the schedule here soon, but in the meantime follow the previous link to see details and cities. I hope one is near you!
And please, don't forget to follow me on Twitter and on Facebook , for the fastest updates. Thanks!

Countdown!
To celebrate, I'm going on a blog tour, landing at a new book blog each day, and talking about lots of different topics. The full schedule of where I'll be is posted at the Mac Teen Books blog.
I hope you'll come along on the tour with me!
In the meantime, there's been some chatter about The Fox Inheritance that has literally made me shout out loud (in a very good way.)
From Horn Book Magazine: "Thrilling suspense . . . admirably complex playing out of the issues of trust, ethics, and betrayal.”
From Jen Robinson's Book Page : "Strong characters, and settings that you can practically see and touch . . . a worthy successor to The Adoration of Jenna Fox . . . Highly recommended. I can't wait for the next book!"
From James Patterson's ReadKiddoRead : "Challenging terrain on which Pearson is working . . . well-written, fast-paced . . . will spark discussion about medical ethics, the nature of human life, and about our responsibilities to one another and to society at large."
And it's a Seventeen Magazine, book club summer read! "You'll love it if . . . you enjoy futuristic novels, like The Hunger Games, where society hasn't exactly progressed as planned. Plus, even though The Fox Inheritance is technically a sequel, you'll have no problem getting wrapped up in Locke, Kara, and Jenna's fascinating (and slightly terrifying) story, even if you haven't read the first novel."
My very sincere thanks to the many who have been spreading the word--and to those who have pre-ordered it! Thank you! Thank you!

In like a lion . . .

First of all, happy birthday to all you Leo's out there--which includes me! And in just a few days . . . drumroll, please . . .
The world will be adding a new Leo. My first grandbaby! A little lioness for sure, considering the way she's been kicking her mommy. I am beyond excited. Our world is filled with pink and bows and ruffles awaiting her imminent arrival. (And I've been buying board and picture books like crazy.)
And if that's not enough news for one month (it is!) my next book will be published on August 30th! The Fox Inheritance is almost here! Hooray! Many thanks to all of you who have been waiting, reading, and cheering from the sidelines, including Guys Lit Wire, Tabitha Olson, this at Roots in Myth, and this from Book Lady's Book Notes. Thanks for such thoughtful reviews--each with a different take.
And thank you, thank you, THANK YOU, to the many who have pre-ordered it here, and here, and here. You're the best! I appreciate it so much.
To celebrate the publication, I will be on a blog tour the week of the 23rd-30th, each day sharing an inside tidbit about The Fox Inheritance at a different blog. Blog tour details to be posted soon! And the week will culminate with a ~*Launch Party*~ at the wonderful and awesome Mysterious Galaxy on Tuesday, August 30th at 7pm. I hope if you're in the San Diego area you'll be there! Even if you're not in San Diego, come! You need to get away, don't you? (Not to mention my little lioness might be there for her very first book signing : )
The following month in September I'll begin touring so I can visit more readers in more cities. And the best part is, I will be touring with these amazing authors: Gabrielle Zevin, Jessica Brody, Alexandra Adornetto, and Alyson Noel! Dubbed the Pen Fatale Tour (I love that : ) we'll be visiting TEN cities across the country:
Woodlands, TX
Houston, TX
Austin, TX
Naperville, ILL
Boulder, CO
Littleton, CO
Pasadena, CA
Upland, CA
Lake Forest, WA
Lynnwood, WA
I hope you live near one of these. It should be a fun, outrageous time touring with these ladies--and hopefully our mayhem won't make the evening news.
My head is spinning already from the crazy and exciting weeks ahead. August is roaring in . . .
in a very good way!

Random Friday Few . . .
2. I saw a teen on a street corner yesterday dressed up like a hot dog. Bun, mustard, ketchup, and all. All I could think of is the laughs and stories he will have to tell years from now. Who can top that as a summer job?
3. I have no frogs in my yard. That disturbs me. We used to have a lot. I posted about one particularly loud one a few years ago. Where have the frogs gone? But I have plenty of lizards. Maybe they're eating the frogs. Ew.
Have a good weekend everyone.

Look what I have!
What is ENTHRALLED you ask? It's an anthology with sixteen stories that revolve around journeys and it's by some pretty amazing writers. I was lucky enough to be included in their company. The contributors are:
Kelly Armstrong
Melissa Marr
Claudia Gray
Carrie Ryan
Kami Garcia
Jackson Pearce
Rachel Vincent
Sarah Rees Brennan
Jeri Smith-Ready
Kimberly Derting
Ally Condie
Jessica Verday
Margaret Stohl
Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Rachel Caine
And moi. My story is titled Gargouille and is about a female gargoyle named Giselle who is captured and has her wings cut off because of the belief that they hold supernatural healing powers. I've always been fascinated with gargoyles in architecture. When I visited the old churches and cathedrals in Europe I was inevitably drawn to these creatures who seemed to fiercely guard the walls of these buildings. I imagined them taking flight at night ready to stop mayhem--or maybe create it. It was fun writing this story. I hope you get a chance to read it.
The book blog Christina Reads YA has a great synopsis of each story and she says about the whole anthology, "there wasn't a single story I didn't enjoy." Thanks Christina!
So, you want a chance to get your own ARC of this book?
1) Post a comment here. And . . .
2) Retweet or FB or blog in one other place (you're on the honor system)
Voila! You are entered in a drawing. On Tuesday, July 12 I will draw four names. I hope you're one of them!
(Be sure to include your email in your comment so I can contact you if you win!)

Spread the word!

A New Writing Book!
Deborah Halverson, my friend, young adult book writer, fellow San Diegan, mother of triplets, AND editor (she is one amazing lady) is launching her new book Writing Young Adult Fiction For Dummies® today. It officially hits stores on July 5, but during her seven day launch she is doing LOTS of great things to celebrate! Like free critiques! Free is always good! : )
As a grand finale, on the final day of the launch she is giving away a FULL manuscript edit!!
I have not read this book yet but I'm told it is filled with the following:
tips for targeting an audience, finding an angle that’ll make the story stand out, and writing a killer hookan extensive chapter on self-marketing to help writers move boldly into the realm of self-promotiontechniques and exercises to shape plot, create teen-friendly characters, develop a convincingly youthful voice, write natural dialogue, and use setting to illuminate characters and plot13 National Book Award winners and finalists, Newbery medalists and honorees, and other award-winning luminaries sharing their insightsself-editing tools to transform a first draft into a strong submission-ready final draftinsider tips for finding the right agent and/or editor and preparing a stand-out submission packageanswers to common book contract questionsadvice on self-publishing for YA writers
I am a writing bookaholic. I love reading about different approaches and ways of tackling writing so I can't wait to add this one to my collection--especially since it's about writing young adult books.
So get thee over to her site if you're a writer--or want to be a writer! I hope you win one of the free critiques!
**I wrote one of those sidebars! : ) I had written a piece on writer's block for a blog and Deborah liked it so much she asked if I could tweak it a bit so she could use if for a sidebar. Of course! I was honored.
