Excerpt:

Keira looked around for the nearest cashier window, spotted one past the roulette and craps tables, and hurried toward it. As she passed the craps table, she looked at her ticket again, with its final payout of one thousand and seventy-five dollars. It was the most money she’d ever won at the casino. Tonight was indeed her lucky night. This money would certainly give her some added time while she made up her mind about what she wanted to do next about finding a job. Still looking down at her ticket, she nearly fell to the floor when she ran into something rock hard. Or make that someone. As she began to fall backward, her arms doing wild cartwheels to try to regain her balance, her eyes found the most gorgeous man she’d ever seen standing in front of her.

He was tall and lean, with striking blue eyes and light-brown hair that fell in waves to his shirt collar. Women would kill for hair like that, it was so perfect. He looked like he’d stepped out of a GQ magazine cover; or better still, put him in a suit of armor and give him a sword, and he would become the legendary knight Tristan come to life. A hero destined to make the ladies swoon, and Keira was ready to swoon. He was impossibly handsome.

All these crazy thoughts swirled through her mind as she fell backwards. This tumble was going to be so embarrassing, never mind the bruising her bottom would endure. Much to her surprise, none of that happened. A strong arm wrapped around her waist at the last minute and prevented her from falling. Instead of sitting on the floor embarrassed, she found herself pressed against a hard and very toned chest.

“Oh, my God! I’m so sorry,” she blurted out. “I wasn’t looking where I was going.”

Blue eyes twinkled at her. “The fault is mine. I stepped back from the table without looking. Please accept my sincere apology,” the handsome stranger said in a charming English accent before releasing his grip on her waist.

Could he be any more perfect? Not only was he Adonis, the god of beauty and desire, in the flesh, but an Adonis with an English accent. Her mouth hung open as she stared at him.

#Review: GRAVES FILES Case Two by Thea Atkinson

5 of 5 stars

Vicki Graves is a monster hunter and she's tasked with evaluating potential hunter, Saul. The boy turns out to be a disappointment when he can't handle a small golem, but that's not the biggest surprise of the night. Vicki and fellow hunter Chase must destroy a huge golem that appears out of the blue on Halloween. These two must protect the vulnerable children out trick or treating while the monster is bent on absolute destruction of everyone in its path.

Oh my goodness, where does Ms. Atkinson conjure these monsters from??? The master storyteller has done it again with a new fantastic and riveting Graves episode. I read it in one sitting and couldn't stop turning the pages until the final word was read. Good thing is was a shorter book because everything else in my household came to a stop while I finished the story. I love Vicki. She's such a badass, but she tries so hard to relate kids and it was good to see her trying to expand her people skills. There are so many twists and turns in this story that I recommend carving out enough time to read it in one sitting. Highly Recommended

#Review: HER ROYAL PAYNE by Shana Galen

3 of 5 stars

I'm a great fan of Ms. Galen and absolutely love her "Survivors" series. The latest installment, "Her Royal Payne" is unfortunately my least favorite of all the books though. I usually devour any of Ms. Galen's books in a day or two, but this one took me almost a week to finish. I did enjoy the main story line of Rowden and Modesty, but wasn't a fan of the secondary characters (Okoro and Madame Renauld) taking over so much of the book. I would have preferred more of the story to include Modesty and her half-siblings.

Ms. Galen is a talented story teller. The book is well-written and there are some twists and turns to surprise the reader. I'm looking forward to reading more of Ms. Galen's books.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: THE PEER'S ROGUISH WORD by Kate Archer

  4 of 5 stars

Giles Dermot, the handsome Marquess of Grayson, is known for his flirty style, but he's never been serious about any young woman. When his father finally cuts off his funds completely, Grayson must move in with his friend Dalton. They are the two last hold outs in their father's ridiculous pact to get all their heirs married. When Grayson meets Kitty Dell, he's intrigued with her and the more time he spends with her the more he admires her. Kitty is known for her scholarly pursuits to the exclusion of everything else, but even she's charmed by the handsome Grayson. Could it be that bookish Kitty is finally the one to capture Grayson's heart?

I've read all the books in the Duke's pact series and thoroughly enjoyed this one. Adding in the mystery of who was trying to embarrass the Royal Society was interesting and kept the plot moving forward. Dalton was his usually devious friend as he tries to warn off Kitty for Grayson's affections. After a kidnapping event, Kitty and Grayson realize they are perfect for each other and get their happily ever after. I can't wait to read Dalton's story as he's the last hold out and has no plans to give in to his father's blackmail for him to marry. Could the icy Miss Danworth be his perfect match?

SNEAK PEEK:

Nervously, she licked her lips.

His gaze dropped to her mouth, his face softened, and he leaned in a bit.

Oh God, is he going to kiss me?

Her heart rate went crazy, pounding in her ears so loudly, she was sure he would hear it. The air suddenly seemed too thin—she couldn’t get her breath as she stared up at him, completely mesmerized, wondering if his lips were as firm and warm as they looked.

#Review: THE VIRGIN WHO HUMBLED LORD HASLEMERE by Anna Bradley

  4 of 5 stars
Benedict Harcourt, the Earl of Haslemere, is a darling rake of the ton. The good-natured lord who doesn't take anything seriously, that is, until he overhears Miss Georgianna Harley talking about his sister, Jane, the Duchess of Kenilworth and a missing young woman. Benedict doesn't let too many things affect his good nature except when it comes to protecting his sister and his nephew. Little does Benedict know that the chance encounter with Ms. Harley will change the course of his life. Miss Georgianna Harley hates unsolved puzzles and she's determined to help the Duchess find the missing young woman, but at every turn, her brother Benedict is there interrupting her search and in the end agrees to work with him.

This was another enjoyable novel by Ms. Bradley in the Swooning Virgins Society series. I loved that Georgiana was strong willed and had a sharp tongue that she wasn't afraid to use when scolding Lord Haslemere. And, of course, there's more to Benedict than anyone knows. Both he and Georgiana agree to team up to help Jane, but there's missing pieces of the puzzle that make it difficult to figure out the big picture. Ms. Bradley does a great job of keeping the mystery interesting and I was happily turning the pages to find out. When I think I've figured out the mystery, Ms. Bradley throws another twist into the story. What I found odd though was that during the days' long search, neither Benedict nor Georgiana changed their clothes and yet went calling on different folks. Surely, people would question whether he was actually a lord based on their disheveled appearance. I can imagine they didn't smell very good either. Besides that, this was another winner from Ms. Bradley.

I voluntarily read an advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

Remember A Soldier: Memorial Day 2021

I think everyone can agree that 2020 was full of frustration, fears and untold sadness as Covid-19 swept through the US killing hundreds of thousands of Americans. There has been unimaginable pain and suffering for so many, but I would also like to remember the meaning of Memorial Day.

Soldiers risk their lives every day for our freedom, a freedom that sometimes we might take for granted. Nothing in life is free and I for one am thankful that we have such brave men and women who are willing to put their lives on the line to protect our freedom.

Dear Solider: Thank you for your Service. Thank you for your Sacrifice. Thank you for your Courage. I Salute YOU. This day honors all of you.

Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May. It was formally known as Decoration Day and commemorates all men and women, who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day and it is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season.

Memorial Day started as an event to honor Union soldiers, who had died during the American Civil War. It was inspired by the way people in the Southern states honored their dead. After World War I, it was extended to include all men and women, who died in any war or military action.

The current name for this day did not come into use until after World War II. Decoration Day and then Memorial Day used to be held on May 30, regardless of the day of the week, on which it fell. In 1968, the Uniform Holidays Bill was passed as part of a move to use federal holidays to create three-day weekends. This meant that that, from 1971, Memorial Day holiday has been officially observed on the last Monday in May. However, it took a longer period for all American states to recognize the new date.

Whatever you decide to do on this holiday weekend as our country struggles to reopen, say a prayer and a "thank you" for all of the US military personnel who are serving around the world to keep us all safe.

My thanks go out to Dave, Tim, Gary, and Brenda for your current and past service. Be safe out there.

#Review: HER SCOTTISH SCOUNDREL by Sophie Barnes

  4 of 5 stars

Blayne MacNeil has been hiding in plain sight for nearly 20 years because of an event that took place in his youth that involved his father. He runs a tavern in St. Giles and keeps a low profile to keep the law from finding him. Miss Charlotte Russell has a secret of her own and needs a bodyguard to help protect her when she visits her publisher. Her parents have no idea about her writing and plan to marry her off to a wealthy American industrialist. Charlotte is horrified and enlists Blayne to play her fake fiance as well as her bodyguard. When their worlds start to collide, can they protect each other from the worst happening?

I really enjoyed this book and loved that Charlotte was a writer and had a bestseller. She has never wanted to marry enjoying her independence too much. She plans to buy a cottage in the country when she's saved enough except love has a way of thwarted all plans. Blayne was such a stand-up guy who helped Charlotte with everything and had no intention of falling in love with her. I immediately knew who the villain was when Charlotte's publishing company was robbed and her latest manuscript stolen and didn't care for the resolution of that subplot. I also prefer to have an epilogue about the couple and not a preview of the next book. Those 2 criticisms brought the book down to 4 stars for me although neither dampened my enjoyment of the overall story. Ms. Barnes throws enough twists and turns into the story that kept me turning the pages.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.

#Review: HOW TO SURVIVE A SCANDAL by Samara Parish

4 of 5 stars

Benedict is a hard working man bringing jobs and opportunities to his village. He's poised to win a lucrative American contract for his steam engine design when the deal is thrown in jeopardy when he's forced to marry Lady Amelia. Amelia has been betrothed to the duke since childhood, but when she's stranded in a snowstorm and nearly freezes to death, it's Benedict who rescues her. When they're found together, the duke refuses to marry her. Now wed to a commoner, Amelia is furious that everything she worked for her whole life could change in an instant. Can Amelia learn to love her honorable and hard-working husband or is she destined to live the rest of her life in misery?

This was the first book I've read by Ms. Parish and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I liked how Amelia learned to value other things in life besides setting the perfect table or presiding over inane teas. She was a resourceful and determined young woman, but I really loved Benedict. He was so honorable and tried to do the right thing for everyone, but he was thwarted at every turn. It takes a near tragedy for both Amelia and Benedict to realize the true value of love and companionship and get their HEA. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I voluntarily read the advanced reader copy and all opinions are my own.
