New Release: SATURDAY NIGHT CLEAVER by Karen Cantwell

Book description:
Poor Barb. She just can't stay out of trouble, no matter how hard she tries. But this time she has a good reason: family friend Colt Baron has gone missing. When soccer mom, Barbara Marr, and her ex-FBI husband, Howard, begin following clues in a search for their treasured pal, they find themselves crashing a rather racy sort of party – a soiree for swinging couples. Awkward. What they learn there is...interesting. But the question is, does the information lead them to Colt?
This fourth book in the Barbara Marr Murder Mystery Series teams Barb with her handsome husband Howard in yet another rollicking and hilarious suburban fiasco...

Author bio:

I have been writing plays and short stories for many years, some of which were published in various college literary magazines. In 2010, my short story “The Recollections of Rosabelle Raines,” was published in the mystery anthology Chesapeake Crimes: They Had it Comin’ available at Amazon, BarnesandNoble, or directly from the publisher, Wildside Press.
But I had always wanted to write a novel. I found that more difficult. Finally, a few years ago I became inspired to write my first novel, "Take the Monkeys and Run," a comedy-mystery, inspired, to some degree by a true monkey sighting. I followed that up with a Barbara Marr short story collection, "The Chronicles of Marr-nia," and two more mystery novels, "Citizen Insane" and "Silenced by the Yams."
Because I love to laugh as well as make other people laugh, I have the most fun imagineable writing the character Barbara Marr as well as her friends and adversaries. When I set out to write these books, I knew I wanted to write something that readers would say, “Now that was FUN.” I HOPE I have achieved that goal. And if I did, please feel free to drop me a line at and let me know! I love to hear from readers. (especially if you LIKE the book!)

Interview with Vicki Bateman

Briefly
describe your journey in writing your first or latest book.
My first book began hilariously. Basically, a friend challenged me and after eight chapters,
she said to continue on. So I did! After a few years of contest, critiques,
etc., I met a critique partner who asked me to review her short stories. I did
and through osmosis, began writing my own. I've sold twenty-one short fiction
pieces.
Are you
currently under a traditional publishing contract for future books or do you
have manuscripts that you will publish directly for Kindle?
I have traditional and self-published works. The reason is
simple--like the stock market, spread yourself around. Don't put all eggs in
one basket.
If you
used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the
creative process for your cover?
For my published work, I filled out the CAS forms and gave
specific input. When I received the preliminary cover, I really looked it over
because I'd heard horror stories from other authors. Sometimes, I've asked to
tweak color, an element, font. In most cases, the artist complied or told me why
not.
What is
your writing process?
Each story is different. After sitting at my desk every
morning, I work. Sometimes, on different stories or blog posts.
Do you use
an outline for your books or just go where your muse takes you?
A friend said the word plotster and it works for me.
Plot(ster) + (Pant)ster=Plotster. Being a romance, we have a hook, a black
moment, and a happily ever after. The fun is all the stuff in between. That's
where the pantstering comes in! Sometimes, I make a heading and type in put
________ here so not to lose momentum.
What kinds
of social media [twitter, facebook, webpage, blog, writing forums] are you
involved with trying to garner publicity for your book(s)?
I do a bunch! Twitter, Facebook, blogsite, Savvy,
RomanceBooks4Us, and Coffeetime. I belong to RWA, DARA, Elements, and RWAWF
chapters too.
Besides
Amazon, are there any other sites where your books are for sale?
At my publishers-Noble Romance and MuseItUp Publishing,
Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords
Besides
writing, do you have any other passions?
Yes!! Needlepoint and reading
What is
the best advice you can offer new authors?
Persevere.
Persevere. Persevere.
What’s
next for you?
I have three submissions out right now. Am working on a
holiday story for next year.
Author Bio:

Like
some of her characters, Vicki has worked a wide variety of jobs including
lifeguard, ride attendant at an amusement park; a hardware store, department
store, book store, antique store clerk; administrative assistant in an
international real estate firm; and a general “do anything gal” at a financial
services firm. The list is…endless.
Born
in Dallas, a graduate of Texas Tech, she is married to Handsome, has two big
boys, an attention-demanding cat, and two adorable poopies.
She
has completed three manuscripts, written essays, and sold many short stories.
She is a member of RWA, and the DARA, Elements, and RWA-WF chapters. In 2004,
she joined DARA and has served in many capacities, including 2009 President.
DARA awarded her the Robin Teer Memorial Service Award in 2010.
Most days begin with her hands set to the keyboard and
thinking "What if??"

Review: ORDERS FROM BERLIN by Simon Tolkien

ORDERS FROM BERLIN takes the reader back to 1940s when London suffers a bombing blitz almost nightly. Adolf Hilter wants to negotiate a truce with Winston Churchill, but Churchill won't negotiate. This is the conflict at the heart of this thriller. The author weaves an intense story of fact and fiction. If Churchill is taken out of the picture would the war have ended differently?
Gestapo agent Reinhard Heydrich assures Hilter that he has a mole hidden deep in MI6 and an assassination plot is hatched to take out Churchill. With the suspicious death of a former MI6 ex-chief, Deputy-chief Alec Thorn is on the case. He begins to piece together clues from a coded message found in the dead man's pocket and finds himself being pulled into a conspiracy of the unthinkable.
The story is fast-paced and kept me glued to the pages. Would Thorn find the mole in time? The author takes you on a thrilling ride of unexpected twists and turns in the story that were surprising and engrossing. Even though history has proven that Churchill wasn't assassinated, I was still reading with bated breath at the end of the book. Fans of spy stories and thrillers will thoroughly enjoy this book. Highly recommended.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review.

Never Forget Pearl Harbor Day: December 7

On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941 America's naval base in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by the forces of the Empire of Japan. More than 2,400 Americans were killed and more than 1,100 were wounded. The attack sank four U.S. Navy battleships and damaged four more. It also damaged or sank three cruisers, three destroyers, one minelayer and damaged 188 aircraft.
What do people do?
On the direction of the President, the flag of the United States of
America should be displayed on the homes of Americans, the White House
and all United States government buildings. The flag should be flown at
half-mast to honor those who died in the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Many associations, especially those linked with Pearl Harbor
survivors or those who died from the attack, participate in special
services to commemorate the event. Memorial services are held at venues
such as the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor. Other
activities include: wreath-laying ceremonies; keynote speeches by those
associated with the event; luncheons; media stories on survivors’
recollections of the Pearl Harbor attack; and school activities to
educate students about the attack on Pearl Harbor in relation to World
War II history.
Public life
Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day is not a federal holiday. Government
offices, schools, businesses and other organizations do not close.
Public transit systems run on their regular schedules. Some
organizations may hold special events in memory of those killed or
injured in Pearl Harbor.
Background

On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, the American Army and Navy base
in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii was attacked by the Imperial Japanese Navy. The
attack came as a surprise to the American Army and Navy and lead to
great losses of life and equipment. More than 2000 American citizens
were killed and more than 1000 were injured. The Americans also lost a
large proportion of their battle ships and nearly 200 aircraft that were
stationed in the Pacific region. More than 60 Japanese servicemen were
killed, injured or captured. The Japanese Navy also lost five midget
submarines and 29 aircraft.
The Japanese military had hoped that the attack on Pearl Harbor would
prevent the United States of America from increasing her influence in
the Pacific. However, the events in Pearl Harbor actually led to the
escalation of World War II. The day after the attack, the United States
declared war on Japan and so entered World War II. President Franklin
Roosevelt in a speech to Congress stated that the bombing of Pearl
Harbor was “a date which will live in infamy.” Shortly afterwards,
Germany also declared war on the United States. In the months that
followed the attack, the slogan “Remember Pearl Harbor” swept the United
States and radio stations repeatedly played a song of the same name.
In 1991, which marked the 50th anniversary of the attack on Pearl
Harbor, the United States Congress established the Pearl Harbor
Commemorative Medal. This is also known as the Pearl Harbor Survivor's
Medal and can be awarded to any veteran of the United States military
who were present in or around Pearl Harbor during the attack by the
Japanese military. The medal can be awarded to civilians, who were
killed or injured in the attack.
Symbols
Memorials have been built to remember or to symbolize the day. For example, the USS Arizona Memorial in Pearl Harbor is a marble memorial built over the sunken USS Arizona,
which was dedicated in 1962. The memorial remembers all military
personnel who were killed in the Pearl Harbor attack. The memorial was
designed by architect Alfred Preis, an Austrian-born resident who lived
in Honolulu and was placed at a detainment camp after the Pearl Harbor
attack as part of the internment policy of Japanese and German Americans
at the time.
Another memorial that commemorates Pearl Harbor Day is the USS Utah, a battleship that was attacked and sunk in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. A memorial to honor the crew of the USS Utah
was dedicated on the northwest shore of Ford Island, near the ship's
wreck, in 1972. The ship was added to the National Register of Historic
Places and declared a National Historic Landmark in 1989. It is also
Utah’s official state ship. Memorabilia, books, and movies about the
attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 have also been made available to the
public over the years.

Interview with Wayne Johnson

Can you
give us a brief overview of your latest book?
The
Bastard’s Handbook is a reference point for all men who either see
themselves as bastards or want to become a better one. It is designed as a
humorous counterpoint to books such as Chicken Soup for the Soul and other
similar self-help guides and is also the man’s answer to Why Men Love Bitches.
This book contains everything you need to know to be a success in business,
life and love. It includes such information as how to become a dictator, how to
avoid fights by using your girlfriend as a human shield and what kind of music
you should listen to while claiming credit for someone else’s idea. This book
is the definitive reference guide.
Did you
try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?
Yes, I did, and I actually managed to get an agent, but the
euphoria was short-lived as although it is so difficult to get an agent that is
only the first part of the process. Publishers expressed an interest but said
that as I lacked a ‘platform’ they weren’t willing to take a chance on an
unknown writer.
What
factors influenced your decision to self-publish to Amazon?
The main factor was just having my book out there for people
to read and hopefully enjoy. After investing such a long time writing it and
then forwarding it on to agents etc it was important for me to see it out there
for sale to the public.
What is
your writing process?
I find it very hard to be disciplined with my writing,
especially if I have no deadlines. I am an experienced magazine journalist and
have also worked in newsrooms so I am used to writing to deadlines, which
unfortunately means doing everything at the last minute. When there is no such
time pressures I tend to write as and when the mood takes me, but if I am in
the ‘zone’ then I can be pretty productive.
Do you
outline your story or just go where your muse takes you.
I do a very brief outline but generally just go where it
takes me and I tend to find that ideas come to me as I write. I am not really
one for planning the whole book before I begin to write.
Did you
hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?
No, but I did have a few people I know who have a critical eye
or who are involved in publishing to read it through and check for mistakes I
may have missed. However, if you don’t have these contacts then I really think
it is a good idea to have an editor review it, although it can be expensive.
What kinds
of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for
promoting your book(s)?
I am currently promoting it on Facebook, where I have
experimented with ads, twitter (although I’m not really a fan), and Goodreads,
plus reading and commenting on blogs aimed at kindle readers.
Do you
find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and
writing your next book?
I do find it difficult but not just because of the time
spent marketing the current book. I find it hard to focus on the next project
while I still need to push and promote and remain excited about my present
book. The most difficult part in starting the next book is finding time with my
current work commitments and taking care of two small children. But then again,
I don’t want to complain, I love writing and these are exciting times for indie
authors.
What
advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing
arena?
First of all be patient, reviews, sales, feedback etc don’t
come overnight, you have to work hard on a few things first. Make sure that
your book is edited and written to a high standard, as, just because ebooks
tend to be cheaper than print, it doesn’t mean readers expect inferior
standards. Also, spend time and effort or money on getting a professional cover
that makes your book stand out and invites people in. Most importantly though,
is not to get too stressed about the whole thing and don’t go into it expecting
to sell millions of copies (although you never know).
Besides
writing, do you have any other passions?
Lots of passions, actually. I love sport, especially soccer
and basketball and I also love history and travel. I have lived in many
countries other than my home of the UK, including the US, Thailand, Korea and Indonesia
and have had enough interesting encounters in these places to give me material
for many more books. But outside of these hobbies and pursuits, I also enjoy
spending quality time with my wife and two young children.

the story, Bri and Quinn go out on a date to the movies where everything goes

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">It all starts with a spark. It doesn’t matter where I am, an
idea will come and then slowly unravel in my head. Characters soon appear—each
voice telling me their names and who they are. Usually I’ll stew a little or
talk it out with someone but once it clicks, I write everything down. Most
times this happens while I’m already working on something else so when I
finally get a chance to look at my notes, I start thinking of scenes and what
will happen. It’s kind of like a movie so I loosely outline each chapter—letting
the characters flesh it out when I’m actually writing it. Then it’s all down to
getting it out of my head and into a word document.</span></div>

darker and edgier than my other releases, but the swoon is still the same. In
the story, Bri and Quinn go out on a date to the movies where everything goes
crazy! Unknown to them both, the Fae are invading, using a charm to influence
humans and turn their violent tendencies loose. The streets resemble the
apocalypse as strangers and loved ones turn on each other. Bri finds out
although she’s immune … Quinn isn’t, changing him from a devoted boyfriend into
someone more sinister. With the clock ticking, Bri races to find a way to save
him—to save their love.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">I don’t belong to a critique group but I do have trusted
friends that I rely on while writing. I value their opinions so I never
hesitate to bounce ideas off them or send snippets I’m working on. They’re
amazing—readers and writers themselves so I’m really grateful for their
support. Sometimes it’s hard to see the whole picture when you’re so close to
the story and they offer encouragement, advice, and a different perspective.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">What is
your writing process?</span></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial; font-size: 11.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Did you

possible—me, an editor, my business partner, and sometimes a proof reader. It’s
really important the story is the best it can be and shines when it’s released.
Of course, nothing is ever perfect but I strive to give the reader a great
experience … I want them swooning and enjoying the book.</span></div>
