#Excerpt: REIGN OF ICE by L.P. Dover

EXCERPT:
As my feet pounded against the sand, I could hear someone behind me, chasing me, but I didn’t slow down. I pushed harder but it didn’t matter because a set of strong hands caught my arms in an instant and whirled me around. I was not expecting it to be the man it was, the one who hadn’t cared to acknowledge me from the very beginning. My breath came out raspy from running, but I immediately pulled out of his grasp and glared at him. “What do you want?” I hissed. He clenched his jaw and sighed. If I was reading his gaze correctly he almost looked worried for me, but that definitely couldn’t be right … right? “I saw you run out of the palace and I wanted to make sure you were all right. Are you leaving?” he asked.I snorted and rolled my eyes incredulously. “Yes, I am. So if you’ll excuse me I need to saddle my horse and get the hell out of here.” I turned to walk away, making sure to keep my chin in the air with dignity after being humiliated by him on numerous occasions. I groaned when I looked over and noticed he was keeping his pace beside me. “I’ll accompany you,” he insisted. “It’s the least I can do.”I didn’t know what came over me, but I burst out laughing. I whirled on him and placed my hands on my hips, narrowing my eyes at him. “The least you can do?” I muttered sardonically. “I’m sorry, Prince Brayden, but the least you can do is leave me alone. I think you’ve done enough. I hate that talking to me is such an inconvenience to you.”Brayden closed his eyes and lowered his head. He ran his hands over his face and groaned before lifting his chocolate brown gaze to mine. “Talking to you is not an inconvenience, Princess. You need to understand that this is all new to me. Your ways are very different from mine.” That was definitely true, I thought to myself.“That may be the case,” I snapped, “but it doesn’t give you the right to be an ass to me. You humiliated me in front of everyone in the Spring Court, and today you refused to talk to me or even look at me. I stayed with you day and night when you were injured because I wanted to. You fascinated me, and I thought there was more to you than what you let on, but I was wrong.” Even saying those words felt wrong. My heart was warring with me to take them back, but I couldn’t. When Brayden tried to reach for my hand, I backed away and swallowed hard, shaking my head against the tears that stung behind my eyes. You cannot fall, I repeated over and over in my mind. I did not want to cry in front of him or show him any weakness whatsoever. My gaze never faltering, I looked straight at him and said, “We’ll figure out another way to save our land. There has to be another way. I may be young, but I’m not going to put up with your bullshit, even if we are destined to be together.”

Interview with Matt Dinniman

Can you
give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?

The
Grinding
is a horror novel set six months after the city of Tucson
has been destroyed by a giant monster called The Grinder—an entity that makes
itself larger and larger by adding captured people and animals to its mass. It
is a first person narrative.  Adam,
the narrator, describes how he desperately attempts to save his wife after she
is captured by the monster. It is not a part of a series.

Have you
ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the
direction of the novel at all?

All the time! I write very loosely, but I always have a
fully fleshed-out character history for every character, even if it’s someone
who gets one line. And sometimes the story goes in a direction I didn’t expect.
When that happens, oftentimes characters I never expected to be important end
up becoming major players in the story.

 What
factors influenced your decision to go with a particular agent or publisher?

I chose Necro Publications because they have been around for
a long time, they have a great reputation, and they are the publisher of some
of my favorite authors, including Edward Lee. I have read several of their
books.

If you
used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the
creative process for your cover?

The cover for my book was designed by an artist named Erik
Wilson (www.facebook.com/erikwilsonart), and I didn’t actually have any input.
When I was given the cover to approve, I immediately liked it.

Do you
belong to a critique group? Have they helped improve your writing?

The first draft of this was critiqued using Critters (www.critters.org), and it has improved my
writing tenfold. I find the act of critiquing the worth of others is just as
valuable as having readers help me for my own.

What is
your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?

I write late at night, and I always listen to music. I can’t
write in silence. I have to have some sort of chaos around me to feed off of.

Do you
outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?

I do not outline. I am in it for the journey. If I know
where it’s going to end, I oftentimes won’t finish for the same reason people
don’t like to watch movies or read books more than once.

Do you
find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and
writing your next book?

The marketing part of the book business is the part I’m the
worst at. Even though I’ve spent most of my adult life working in marketing, I
would much prefer to write all night because I am much more comfortable with
it.

Besides
writing, do you have any other passions?

I am an artist. I own CollageOrama, LLC., and I sell my art
online and through licensing agreements.

What’s
next for you?

I am currently working on my next book. That’s my favorite
part—writing the book.

Interview with J.B. Salsbury

Can you
give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?

Fighting
to Forgive
is the second book in the Fighting Series. It covers
middleweight, jiu-jitsu black belt fighter Blake “The Snake” Daniels. His
character is introduced in book one as Jonah “The Assassin” Slade’s best
friend. He’s a foul-mouthed bad boy who comes across as one dimensional, but
once the reader gets inside his head they’ll find he’s more complex and more
intense than they could’ve imagined.

Blake has secrets, demons from his past that he covers with
a cocky smile and a dirty joke. Layla is the same. She wears fake confidence
like a uniform hoping no one will see her for who she really is.

Through a series of events, they’re forced to acknowledge
that everything they’ve avoided in each other is exactly what they need most in
order to bury the past and move on.

Have you
ever had a minor character evolve into a major one? Did that change the
direction of the novel at all?

The closest I’ve come to this problem is with Blake’s
character in Flight. I’ve said before that I believe everyone has an “Inner
Blake”. It’s that personality trait that surfaces after a few too many shots of
tequila. The voice in your head that tells you dancing on the table is a good
idea. It’s that part of you that giggles when someone unknowingly says
something inappropriate, or the part of you that responds to things like “Wow,
that’s really big!” with a “That’s what she said.”

I’m pretty sure that my inner Blake was responsible for his
near takeover. Blake’s personality came so easily and he just flew off the
pages. It’s debatable whether or not he ended up stealing Jonah’s thunder a
bit. I had to hold him back and even cut a few parts from Fighting for Flight
because I thought he would overshadow our hero. Luckily it wasn’t hard to
muzzle him because I knew at that point that his book had to be next. He was
itching to have his story told. Once I started his book I just let him go and
gave him his own pages to play on.

Did you
try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?

No. I knew from day one that I wanted to be an Indie author.
I’d been reading romance for years and had enjoyed the freedom that the
self-published authors had. Their stories were raw, emotional, and some even
controversial. I welcomed the idea of having complete control over my writing
as well as my career. From conception to distribution, I wanted my hands in
every aspect.

I’m not against traditional publishing, and if the
opportunity arose I’d be interested in giving it a shot for the experience, but
I’ve always been a writer for readers. Thank goodness with the direction that
publishing is taking, there’s no need for the middleman any more. Writers can
take their stories and drop them directly into the reader’s hands. I love being
a part of that.

If you
used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the
creative process for your cover?

As a self-published author I have complete control over
every aspect of my cover design. I worked on both covers with my amazing
graphic designer Amanda Simpson at Pixel Mischief. She asked me how I
envisioned the cover, and then took my ideas and expanded on them. The cover
for Fighting for Flight happened
almost instantaneously, but Fighting to Forgive’s cover was much harder. I had
the perfect picture, but the model was covered in tattoos. Amanda had to take
off every single tattoo because Blake doesn’t have all that ink. Once we got
the picture where we wanted it, we worked hard on how to tie the picture into
the space. After going through many different ideas, I finally came up with the
door. It’s a significant as well as symbolic part of the story and once I saw
it all together on the cover I knew. I broke out in goose bumps at the emotion
in conveyed. That was it.

What is
your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?

You can tell from my books that I’m very influenced by
music. There isn’t one genre of music that I wouldn’t listen to. So yes, I
listen to music a lot when I write. There are times when I prefer silence, like
if I’m working on a particularly difficult scene, I don’t want the added
distraction.

Besides getting comfortable and settling in somewhere cozy
with my laptop, I have no writing process other than to put myself with that
particular character and let my fingers record what I see happening in my head.

Do you
outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?

I’ve never outlined. Well, that’s not true. I did try it for
the book I’m working on now and it was a complete waste of time. My characters
have so much to say, I just let them take me on the journey. It’s like watching
a movie in my head. They tell me where they’re at and who’s there, I place the
scene in my head and then push play.

What have
you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey?

Wow, how much time do you have? I walked into self-publishing
like a blind puppy, stumbling around and hoping for the best. Everything I’ve
learned was due to plain ole trial and error. I think the most valuable thing I’ve
learned is the importance of surrounding myself with good, honest people. I
have a group of critique partners, other writers who I run my chapters by as
well as brainstorm with, and vent to. They’re the ones who’ll pull me aside and
say, “Hey, you can do better than this. Rewrite it.” I don’t know what I’d do
without them.

There’s also a fabulous writer by the name of Elizabeth
Reyes who is an absolute Saint. She’s a successful self-published author who’s
been in the business and has always been great about allowing me to ask her the
stupidest questions.

Another thing I’ve learned is that the Indie community is
like a subculture all its own. Blogs, readers, other authors, it’s important to
submerge yourself in that world and keep your finger on the pulse of the ever
changing dynamics. Stay on top of the trends, be involved in the hot topics,
make your mark.

Do you
find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and
writing your next book?

Absolutely! I want so badly to throw myself into Rex’s book,
but I’m holding off a little because I want to give him 100% of my attention
and right now I can’t do that. There’s no better feeling in the world than getting
lost in a good book, and writing them is no different. When I plunge myself
into the fictional world of UFL fighters and all the drama that comes a long
with them, I can’t stand to be interrupted. That’s why I usually write after my
kids go to bed or when they’re at school. I love getting lost in the story
completely and leaving my ‘to do’ list behind. That said, I have started Rex’s
book and at chapter two things are already super intense, so I’ll back off
until I can jump back in and give him my full attention.

What
advice would you give a new author just entering into the self-publishing
arena?

Yes, surround yourself with good people. Not yes people, but
honest people. Never ever read your bad reviews. Never. Don’t even touch them.
You’ll think by reading them that you may learn something that could help you
improve. You’re wrong. It’ll do nothing but jack with your writing mojo and
make you question everything. And finally, reading is just as important as
writing. It’s easy to stop reading books when you write. Don’t let that happen.
Find time to get a book in. You’re writing, as well as your mood, will be
better for it.

What’s
next for you?

I’m going to continue writing. I have so many story ideas
and characters swirling in my head, my fingers can’t work fast enough to get it
all out. Next up in the Fighting Series is Rex. His story is going to challenge
every aspect of my writing. The subject matter is darker than I’m used to. Rex
is a songwriter so I’ve been forced to write lyrics, which is new to me too.
And the fMC in this book is a 180-degree flip from the heroines of the first
two books. I’m excited to see how it all plays out, but nervous as hell that I
won’t be able to pull it off.

After Rex’s book I’ll give the readers what they’ve been
begging for, Eve will finally get her HEA. Next in the series will be Braeden,
Blake’s brother. His book will be fun to write because he’s so much like Blake
and I look forward to getting those boys together for our entertainment. I have
a book planned for Killian and Elle who the readers will get to know better in
Fighting to Forgive. The evil Camille will get a book at some point, redeeming
her bad girl image. Then there’s Mason, Caleb, and possibly Talon. There’s also
a few other story ideas that aren’t MMA related that I’d like to explore.

Thank you for having me!

Fighting to Forgive

by JB Salsbury
What do you do when everything you avoid, turns out to be exactly what you need?

Easy and predictable, just the way he likes it, Blake Daniels flies through life the way he burns through women: on his terms, no regrets.

With his fighting career in full swing, he's on the threshold of title contention. But when his training is compromised by injury, the stakes grow impossibly higher. The rage that fuels his punches also chips away at his focus, and he risks losing everything he cares about.

He won’t let that happen. Not again.

Layla’s through with men. After a marriage that never should’ve happened, she hopes to reclaim the pieces of the woman she lost years ago.

Emotional abuse has left her insecure and terrified. A master at faking what she’s not feeling, she masks her self-doubt in false confidence.

She’ll never let another man hurt her. Not again.

Chased by shadows of the past, Blake and Layla know what they don’t want, but their hearts have a different plan. As a web of lies and betrayal threatens to destroy them, they’re forced to make a choice.

Is love enough to heal even the deepest wounds?

#Montlake publishes RECLAIM MY HEART by Donna Fasano

 photo DFRerelBanner_zpscb177693.jpg

Now with Montlake Romance - Release Day TODAY 12 November, 2013

On becoming a Montlake Author:
Let me tell you about my wonderful publishing experience! I have to back up a little bit… to this past spring. I self-published a romance titled Reclaim My Heart. The book received great reviews immediately, and it sold well from the beginning. Very well. In fact, during the first week of August I was enjoying a mug of coffee while perusing the USA Today Bestseller's List (my usual Thursday morning routine), and I nearly choked when I saw that Reclaim My Heart was sitting at #123 on the list. A couple of days later I was contacted by an editor from Montlake. She told me she'd read one of my books months before and had been keeping an eye on me. She said she'd read Reclaim My Heart and loved it. Now, what author doesn't love to hear that? She made an offer I couldn't refuse.

The Montlake editor and the design team loved the cover that was on the indie version of the book; however, Amazon had trouble licensing the rights to the image. So we searched for weeks before finding the picture that's on the current cover. I love it! And I hope my readers do, too.

I'm happy to be writing romance novels for Montlake. I feel wanted and appreciated, and it can't get much better than that in the publishing industry!

About The Book :

Sixteen years ago, Tyne Whitlock cut all ties to her past and left town under the shameful shadow of a teenage pregnancy. Now her fifteen-year-old son is in trouble with the law, and she is desperate for help. But reaching out to high-powered attorney Lucas Silver Hawk will tear open the heart-wrenching past in ways Tyne never imagined.

Forced to return to the Delaware Indian community where Lucas was raised, Tyne and Lucas are tempted by the heated passion that consumed them as teens. Tyne rediscovers all the reasons she found this man irresistible, but there are scandalous secrets waiting to be revealed, disgraceful choices made in the past that cannot be denied. Love is a powerful force that could heal them both—if the truth doesn't rip them apart.

Excerpt

From Chapter Two:

"Please, Lucas."
He couldn't dismiss the tone of those two small words, nor could he ignore the magnitude of emotion clouding her expression. He had no choice but to relent.
"Sit down," he murmured. He closed the door of his office and then returned to perch himself on the corner of his desk. He steeled himself before asking, "What's on your mind?"
She seemed to shrink a little as a thousand thoughts ran though her head. Seconds passed, and still she didn't speak.
Lucas witnessed the phenomenon almost on a daily basis. The people who wound up in his office often felt as if they were carrying the world on their shoulders. He knew her anxiety would eventually discharge, and from the looks of it, he wouldn't have to wait long.
Finally, she pressed her hand to her chest. "I can't breathe."
"Relax. Do you want some water?"
She shook her head, a lock of her long, platinum hair falling over her forearm. "No. I need to get this out. I promised you I'd hurry."
He couldn't keep his brows from arching a fraction. She hadn't kept her promises in the past. Why would he expect her to now?
Tyne ran her tongue along her full bottom lip, hesitated another moment, then blurted, "I need a lawyer."
Lucas closed his eyes and stifled a sigh. He could have guessed as much, of course. He'd worked hard to get himself into the privileged position of being able to pick and choose his clients. The last person he wanted to represent was Tyne Whitlock.
"A good lawyer, Lucas."
Common sense told him Tyne wasn't attempting to flatter him. She was speaking purely out of desperation.
"Look, Tyne—" Something made him stop. He sighed, and then he stood, taking his time rounding his desk and sitting down. The leather-upholstered arms of the chair were cool and smooth under his fingertips.
"I know some of the best attorneys in the city." He plucked a pen from the cup on his desktop. "And many of them owe me a favor or two." He reached into his inside jacket pocket, pulled out one of the business cards he always kept handy, and turned it over, poised to write. "Let me give you some names and numbers—"
"I don't want just any attorney." Her chin lifted. "I want you. Why else would I have come here?"
His gaze lowered to the small white card in his hand. With much deliberation, he set down the pen and the card, and then he looked her directly in the eyes.
Every muscle in her body appeared board-stiff.
"Listen to me—" he kept his tone calm "—when people find themselves in trouble with the law, or victimized, or wrongfully sued, or unjustly accused, they tend to get lost in a strange, I don't know, franticness. A recklessness that they almost always regret. Believe me when I tell you that no situation is hopeless, and circumstances are rarely as desperate as they might be perceived. Whatever trouble you're in, don't let panic and fear haze your thinking."
"You don't understand."
"I think I do," he rushed to assure her. "I see it every day. Honest, hardworking people finding themselves in dire straits. And this unfamiliar territory throws them. They grasp at help from the first source that comes to mind."
"But—"
"Just like that old adage warning that only a fool acts as his own lawyer, it's also foolish to choose an attorney in haste. You and I have a past, Tyne, and even though all of that took place years and years ago, the fact remains that we have a history. I don't believe I would be the best person to represent you in a court of law. You need someone who'll be totally unbiased. Let me give you some names. I'll make some calls for you myself—"
"Stop!" She lifted her hands and scooted to the edge of the seat. "You don't understand. And I can't make you understand if you won't shut up for a minute."
His eyebrows arched and the frustration in her statement had him leaning back a bit.
She frowned. "I'm sorry. Really, I am. I had to stew all day yesterday." She fisted her hands in her lap. "I didn't expect to reach anyone on a Sunday, but do you know that your firm doesn't offer an emergency number on the answering machine?" She exhaled with force. "I'm a nervous wreck just being here. Seeing you. But all that aside, I shouldn't have snapped at you. Please accept my apology."
He didn't react, didn't move. He just waited for her to continue.
"The thing is… what you need to know…"
Once again, she grew terribly cautious, and Lucas found that extremely curious. What the hell was it she found so hard to tell him? What kind of trouble was she in?
She blanched, but then her spine straightened. "I'm not the one who needs a lawyer. I want to hire you, yes. But I'm not the one needing representation. It's my son who's in trouble." A nerve at the corner of her eye ticked, but her gaze never veered from his as she added, "Our son, Lucas."

Honor A Veteran!

The Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at Arlington National Cemetery . The ceremony commences precisely at 11:00 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by veterans' organizations and remarks from dignitaries. The ceremony is intended to honor and thank all who served in the United States Armed Forces.

Don't forget to thank a soldier you may encounter in your daily lives. They serve so we may enjoy our freedom.

My personal thank you goes to Tim, Brenda, Gary and David. You all are awesome and make me proud to say I know and love the soldiers in my family.

New #Horror Release: THE GRINDING by Matt Dinniman

by Matt Dinniman

Genre: Horror

Six months ago, the world watched in horror as we lost an American city.

The Grinder. That's what the survivors of Tucson called the monster. Just one touch, and they became a part of it. It used their bodies as limbs and as weapons. In just a matter of hours, it became huge, a towering monstrosity made entirely out of tens of thousands of people and animals.

This isn’t behind-the-scenes bulls**t from the point of view of the military. This isn’t yet another conspiracy theory about what really happened to Air Force One that night, or about the decision to nuke Tucson.

This is a rare, eyewitness account from someone who was there, in the midst of the destruction. But most importantly, this is the terrifying truth.

#Review: ATTEMPTING ELIZABETH by Jessica Grey

5 of 5 stars

ATTEMPTING ELIZABETH is an absolutely delightful story of Kelsey Edmundson and her infatuation/love for the the Jane Austin classic, Pride and Prejudice. Kelsey is in a slump due to her recent bad breakup and lets herself be talked into going out on the town with her friend Tori where she meets sexy Australian bartender, Mark Barnes. Mark is everything that Kelsey doesn't want and she longs for the romantic heroes such as Mr. Darcy from her favorite novel. In an unexpected turn of events, Kelsey wakes up one morning to find that she's been transported inside the pages of Pride and Prejudice, but is it real or just a dream?

I loved the author's voice in this story especially with Kelsey. Because I also love anything Jane Austen, I found myself totally immersed in the fun and flirty story. Although I can't recite line for line in Pride and Prejudice, like Kelsey can, I know the novel well enough to know exactly where Kelsey landed. The whole story was clever and once I started reading, I didn't want to stop. Even if you're not a Jane Austen fan, ATTEMPTING ELIZABETH will totally capture your attention. Recommended.

I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
