10 Things I've Learned While Being an Indie Writer by Misty Provencher

If you’re a writer, a reader, a potato-peeler…I figured I’d come by and say hello and talk to you about 10 things I’ve learned while being an Indie writer. There’s probably less than ten, but I’ll do my best to stretch them out and talk slow so this post will last. Hee hee. Alright. Enough horsing around. Here we go—
10 Things I’ve Learned While Being An Indie Writer
· I’ve learned what BRAND means. It means that people will pick up your books, expecting a certain kind of story out of you. You might be the paranormal girl. Or the Queen of the kinky-sex-scenes. Or the guy that makes us laugh. For me, I’ve swept all of my brands into one big heap and call my brand The Unexpected Twist. You can expect it all from me.· I’ve learned that looking at reviews can KILL YOU. There will be people who love our work, people who hate it, people who blow smoke up our fannies, people who are just miserable trolls. When I’m feeling crappy, I go check out J.K. Rowling’s slew of 1 star reviews and realize it ain’t no thing.· I’ve come to understand that the battles over comma placements have gone on long before I was born and will continue long after I am gone.· I’ve learned: OMG! I can format a book!· OMG! I can make an ebook cover!· OMG! I can learn to plot stringently…I’m sure of it!· I’ve learned I need to just keep writing. You can get trapped in quality vs. quantity; Indie vs Traditional; smut vs. sweet, and it all comes down to this: WRITE A BOOK.· I’ve learned that every single person I meet, upon hearing that I am a writer, tells me that their life story would make a bestseller. And they are right.· I’ve learned that writing has to be for the joy. And when it is, we can’t lose.· I’ve learned that every book is a bugger, but also better than the last.
I hope it helps you too! Thanks again for having me over for the guest post spot!

#Review: THE WEDDING BELLE by Regina Duke

THE WEDDING BELLE takes us back to Eagle Toe, Colorado where we meet Ulysses Garrison. He's in wheelchair, having had an accident while on assignment for his father's oil business, but all is not as it seems. What really happened in Kuwait? A chance meeting brings Belle Daireng in contact with Ulysses's mother. She insists on hiring Belle as Uly's nurse. Belle is relieved to have a nursing job especially since she was trying to distance herself from the events of leaving her last job.
Ms. Duke brings another sweet romance for her fan's enjoyment. She has a knack for creating engaging and interesting characters. I loved Uly in this book. He's a good guy who was caught in a difficult situation trying to help a friend, but now that he's met Belle, he's wants nothing more than to start over. Belle is the consummate professional who is convinced she'll never fall in love again. The author does a superb job of letting the reader peek inside both Belle's and Uly's inner feelings. They both are harboring secrets. Will those secrets bring them together or tear apart their growing love? No spoilers here. Fans of sweet romance will thoroughly enjoy this story. Highly recommended.
Blurb:Colorado Billionaires Book 4
Belle Daireng's dream career brings heartbreak, betrayal, and the threat of a lawsuit. Her reason for becoming a nurse was born of a secret that could destroy her future hope for happiness. But right now, she's nursing a broken heart and she'd settle for any job that would ease her financial worries.
Ulysses Garrison's secrets could cost his family billions. The last thing he wants is a full-time nurse telling him what to do and driving him crazy with her athletic beauty. If only he hadn't told that first lie. Now he has even more secrets, and one of them is his growing love for Belle.

NEW Ad site for authors of: SCIENCE FICTION and FANTASY

Fans of Science Fiction and Fantasy now have a new outlet for finding quality free, discount, and new release book listings.
The owner, an author and self-proclaimed SciFi and Fantasy freak, opened the site to submissions in September of 2014.
“As an indie author with a limited budget, I know how hard it is to find ways to create exposure for myself and my work. The market is saturated. New authors publish their work on Amazon and Smashwords literally every single day. My books equate to needles in a haystack. For me to achieve any level of success, I need as many ways to advertise my books as possible. I’ve tried Google Adwords and I’ve tried Goodreads ads: they don’t work. I can’t afford a publicist. What hasconsistently worked is email marketing through sites like Bookbub and Booksends. Unfortunately, the norm for most email marketing sites is to only allow authors to advertise once every six months. That doesn’t work for me. I want to advertise at least every month, preferably twice that often. There could never be too many options available.
I use a lot of email marketing companies already, and they’re not enough. That’s why I’ve created SciFiFantasyFREAK.com—to give authors in my genre another affordable option for advertising, and to allow them to target a specific list of clientele: those with a passion for science fiction and fantasy.”***
And SciFiFantasyFREAK is certainly affordable. Daily listings are only $15, and New Release listings—something most ad sites don’t offer—are only $25. What’s more, through the end of the year every listing is free based on availability.
If you’re a science fiction or fantasy reader, this is a great place to find books you’ll love.
If you’re a science fiction or fantasy author, this is the perfect place to promote your book—especially through the end of the year!
Author Request link: http://www.scififantasyfreak.com/p/authors.html
Requirements To be considered for listing, your book must be priced at $2.99 or less. The only exception to this rule will be new releases.Your book must have at least ten reviews, and your average rating must be 3.75 or better.Your book will not be featured if it has been listed within the past 90 days. Subscribers enjoy a variety to choose from, and would lose confidence in this service if they saw the same title over and over.If you are an author with multiple titles, you may submit different titles once every 30 days. There will be no more than 10 listings per day in the Daily Picks email, plus one New Release . Once all the spots have been filled for the day, that's it. There may be less then ten, but there will never be more.
The regular Daily Picks listings are for one day only. Depending on availability, you may be able to purchase the Top Spot for an additional fee. If no top spot has been reserved, the one reserved first for that date will get it.
New Release listings can purchased for up to 3 days in the interest of providing maximum exposure for your new project. These listings must have a publishing date within the past 90 days. There is no price limitation on New Release listings, however it is highly recommended that you offer a discount for maximum results.

Interview with Jesse Giles Christiansen

Do you have a favorite character? My favorite character is, first and foremost, Captain Shelby. I began a short story almost four years ago entitled Right Crooked about a submerged graveyard and an eccentric, cursed beach town. Captain Shelby was not a planned character; he just leapt out of the pages. When an exciting character asks for room to grow, I’ve learned to just obey. I guess I did the right thing, since Captain Shelby basically started my writing career. Did you try the traditional route to publishing, i.e. querying agents/publishers?Interesting question! Actually, I’m one of those hybrid authors of the 21st century, with self-pub novels and traditionally published novels. My publisher, Imajin Books, is a very unique traditional small house with indie marketing skills. I got lucky finding them. Imajin Books published PELICAN BAY, which became an instant #1 Amazon bestseller in literary fiction/sea adventures. They are also publishing CAPTAIN SHELBY. Before publishing with Imajin Books, I did go through hundreds of agent submissions and rejections; it’s sort of author baptism, I guess.
How long before you got your offer of representation/your first contract? Was it for your first novel? It took about a year to get a contract for my first novel, PELICAN BAY. I turned down the first contract because it was unacceptable—awful percentages and very little promise of marketing on the side of the publisher. This is very common for traditional smaller houses. I took my time—did a lot of research—then came across Imajin Books. If you’re going to slowly climb the latter rather than waiting years for a Big Six contract, you better choose your smaller house wisely. Fortunately, I did! What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?I think the decision to publish traditionally or to self-publish centers on timing, novel-type, and the type of contract you get or think you can get. For example, I’m self-publishing a Christmas Novella this fall because I want to be sure it comes out at the right time. Also, it’s a novella, which may be very hard to place with publishers, especially bigger ones. That being said, I might get a bestseller and than I could negotiate print rights for the novella with a good traditional publisher—even movie rights. Finally, I can’t charge a lot for a novella, so unless I’m going to sell thousands upon thousands of books, self-publishing is more financially sane. But a writer needs to be sure he or she has enough of a readership/social media base to self-publish. If I didn’t have other books, and a great publisher, I couldn’t expect to self-publish a novella and sell a decent number of copies. In short, more books means more dollars, especially if you have folks reading other book of yours.
If you used a graphic designer/publisher’s designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover? My cover designer is Ryan Doan, one of the best in the business—a digital Van Gogh. He always asks me my vision of the cover, then goes about his beautiful art work. He then allows me to make changes if needed. However, his work is so amazing, my adjustments are usually very few. He seems to be able to pull the vision right out of my head somehow.
Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?I always have the main premise and all the themes and possible plots in my head, but I never write them down; I feel that doing so commits me to too much. For a novel to flow naturally, it must be written naturally. In other words, if the author doesn’t really know what’s precisely coming next, neither will the reader. And that’s good.
Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing? To not do so is tantamount to vocational suicide. I have no less than two editors and two proofreaders look at every novel I produce. The author can never see his work objectively. Also, there are always words to be removed in the mission of shrinking reality to fit the manuscript. Otherwise, the reader is overwhelmed with it all. Writers write, and editors edit. Neither can exist without the other … if quality art is the goal.
What have you’ve learned during your self-publishing journey? You must have a readership to publish. And most importantly, self-publishing a work without adequate marketing is like giving a speech to a stadium of people without a microphone. Sometimes even the first row can’t hear you.
Do you find it difficult to juggle your time between marketing your current book and writing your next book?I believe that a good mix is 40% writing, 30% reading, and 30% marketing. In the beginning you have to sometimes be willing to spend more time marketing because you are building an author platform and a readership. But in the end, it is so worth it, especially if you’re a career author who has dedicated the remainder of his or her life to creating novels.

#Excerpt: AND JUSTICE FOR SOME by Joanne Sydney Lessner

Dinner theater can be a death sentence—literally.
Actress Isobel Spice and her best friend Delphi Kramer are thrilled to finally have an opportunity to perform together, even if it’s just a cheesy interactive murder mystery at a judge’s lifetime achievement dinner. But when Isobel’s dramatic death scene is upstaged by a real murder and Delphi is left holding the still-smoking gun, Isobel drops the role of victim and assumes the role of detective. With the help of her precocious brother Percival and her reluctant temp agent James Cooke, Isobel peels back layers of deception to reveal a shocking abuse of power—and no shortage of suspects eager to deliver justice to a man who denied it to so many.
Excerpt:
Practically before the last word was out of Delphi’s mouth, the crack of the gunshot ricocheted off the walls. Isobel smacked her hand to her chest and felt the blood packet burst against her blouse. Someone shrieked behind her as she staggered forward onto the dance floor. The Brioschi burbled up from her throat, foaming out the corners of her mouth and down her face. She spun around, arms flailing, eyes closed. More shrieks erupted around her.
Yup, she thought with satisfaction, definitely memorable.
She finally collapsed on the floor, limbs splayed, and after a few full-body spasms, settled into a position she could hold until Peter lifted her into the fireman’s carry.
She strained to hear Andrew’s line, “You just shot my wife,” but she was distracted by the sound of a glass shattering somewhere to her left. Somebody kicked her arm, but she held still, determined to be a convincing corpse. A pungent tang of gunpowder tickled her nose. Funny, she hadn’t noticed that when they were practicing. And…was that someone crying?
Suddenly, she felt Peter’s stubble scrape her cheek as he hissed in her ear, “Get up. Get up!”
He tried to yank her into a sitting position, but the sharp movement made her choke on the still-fizzing Brioschi. She knelt on all fours, hacking and heaving until her eyes finally stopped tearing.
“You see?” she heaved. “That’s why I wanted to practice…”
Her words died in her throat as she got to her feet. Two Hostelry security guards gripped Delphi’s shoulders, pinning her arms behind her back. Delphi’s mouth was frozen open in horror. Slowly, Isobel turned and looked behind her.
Joanne Sydney Lessner is the author of BloodWrites Award-Winner The Temporary Detective (Dulcet Press, 2012), which introduces Isobel Spice, aspiring actress and resourceful office temp turned amateur sleuth. Isobel’s adventures continue in the novels Bad Publicity (Dulcet Press, 2013) and And Justice for Some (Dulcet Press, 2014). The Ghosts’ High Noon (Dulcet Press, 2014), an Isobel Spice short story, is available on http://joannesydneylessner.com as a free download. Inspired by the true story of the world’s most expensive bottle of wine, Joanne’s debut novel Pandora’s Bottle (Flint Mine Press, 2010) was named one of the top five books of 2010 by Paperback Dolls. Her play, Critical Mass, winner of the 2009 Heiress Productions Playwriting Competition, received its New York premiere at the Lion Theatre on Theatre Row in October 2010. She has written the book and lyrics to several musicals with her husband, composer/conductor Joshua Rosenblum, including the cult hit Fermat’s Last Tango, which received its Off-Broadway premiere at the York Theatre Company in November 2000, and Einstein’s Dreams, based on the celebrated novel by Alan Lightman. They are currently developing a musical based on Wilkie Collins’s The Haunted Hotel for the Signature Theatre Company in Arlington, Virginia. Interview with V.K. Sykes, DANGER & DESIRE Boxed Set

What is the one thing your readers would be most surprised to learn about you? That I’m actually part of a husband and wife writing team who put out books under the pen name of VK Sykes. Many of our readers found us through my Vanessa Kelly historical romances, so some of them did already know that I co-write contemporary romance and romantic suspense with my hubby. But others had no idea and were really surprised to find out that we write together—especially romance novels. It’s always fun to read a review that mentions how realistic our male characters are when it’s clear the reader doesn’t realize that a man co-authored the manuscript. I wouldn’t say that it’s not occasionally frustrating to have to work with a writing partner, but the benefits outweigh the negatives. Randy is very good with plot and characterization, but he doesn’t enjoy layering in emotional subtext or writing sex scenes. So that’s where I come in. I guess you could say our writing tasks fall along gender-related lines, but we’re okay with that!
What comes first, the plot or characters?Definitely the characters. Although plot is obviously important, readers generally love—or hate—a story because of its characters. I think most people would have trouble remembering the details or the exact sequence of events in books like To Kill a Mockingbird or Gone With The Wind , but they sure remember Scout and Atticus Finch and Scarlet O’Hara. In Lethal Confessions , it was the villain who got us started. Once we had a clear picture of him and what he was all about, we were able to imagine the type of hero and heroine who could stand up to and ultimately defeat him. Plot is certainly important as the vehicle for story—in other words, how the characters react and change in response to the twists, turns, and challenges thrown at them through plot.
Tell us about a favorite character from a book.My most favorite character in the world is Amelia Peabody from The Amelia Peabody Mysteries by the fabulous Elizabeth Peters. Amelia is the most outrageously confident, decisive character one could ever hope to meet between the pages of a book, a classic depiction of the non-nonsense, late Victorian heroine who marched through life in a determined effort to improve the world. Naturally, Amelia often gets it wrong, but she’s also fearless, indomitable, smart, hilarious, fiercely protective of those she loves, and eternally optimistic. I think she’s one of the most brilliant characters ever created. Randy’s favorite fictional character is probably Jack Reacher from Lee Childs’ great series.
What are your favorite TV shows?Right now both Randy and I are totally hooked on Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and The Black List. I lean toward The Walking Dead as my fave, and Randy would probably come down on the side of Breaking Bad. But all three shows share the same characteristics: strong, flawed, but incredibly engaging characters, high stakes, smart writing, and some very dark humor. Good or bad, you care about these characters and want to find out what’s going to happen to them. All three shows are master classes in how to create riveting stories. Plus…zombies. Anything with zombies pretty much gets my vote.
Do you write in multiple genres or just one?Between the two of us, we write in three genres: contemporary romance, romantic suspense, and Regency-set historical romance. We love all three, although we both wish that we had more time to write romantic suspense. We do have the first draft of a sequel to Lethal Confessions , and we hope to get that book finished sooner rather than later. My next historical romance, Tall, Dark, and Royal , comes out in November, and we also have a new contemporary romance series debuting with Grand Central in February. It’s the Seashell Bay Series, and it’s set in a lobster fishing community on a small island off the coast of Maine.
What is your favorite meal?If left to my own devices, I would probably eat chocolate cake 24/7. Since that’s not realistic, I think I’d have to come down on the side of brunch, which encompasses most of our favorite foods—eggs and bacon, pancakes, French toast, home fries…what’s not to love? I guess that makes us pretty boring in the world of foodies, but we’re more into comfort food than exotic culinary adventures.
Author bio:V.K. Sykes is really two people – Vanessa Kelly and Randy Sykes, a husband and wife team who write USA Today Bestselling contemporary romance and also romantic suspense. Randy excels at plot and characterization, but tends to fall down on the job when it comes to that pesky old thing called emotion. That’s where Vanessa steps in. She usually writes the sex scenes too, since Randy is a bit uncomfortable when it comes to that sort of stuff. Vanessa also writes award-winning Regency-set historical romance for Kensington Zebra under her own name. You can check out their books at www.vksykes.com and also have a look at Vanessa’s bestselling historical romances at www.vanessakellyauthor.com.

Now enjoy an excerpt:Her past is back to haunt her—and this time, it’s got a gun.
When Gage Lawton finds his brother shot to death on his back porch, every shred of evidence points to one person: Gage’s ex-lover, Riley Beckett. The only gun in town that fires a bullet of that caliber belongs to her.
Certain the shooting is payback for his part in the loss of her parents, he abandons his promise to stay out of her life and confronts her, his rage backed up with a revolver. Yet when she steps through the door, all thoughts of revenge burn to ashes.
A year after Riley unwillingly walked away from Gage, she enters her home to find him sitting in the dark, gun pointed at her head. One look into those achingly familiar blue eyes reminds her how wrong she was to let him go. But now there’s more standing between them than their heated past.
A twist of fate—and a hail of sniper bullets—puts them in the cross hairs of a killer, leaving Riley with just two slim options: trust her greatest betrayer, or face a murderer alone.
This book has been previously published.
Warning: Prepare to get caught in a crossfire of profanity, danger, and desire. Intense violence may trigger the desire to wear body armor…and take it off. Very, very slowly.
The evidence had been right in front of him. He didn’t want to believe it, but he couldn’t deny it either. Not until he saw her reaction for himself, and he wasn’t going to do that unarmed. He reached for her, feeling the charge of their connection long before his fingers grazed her skin. A hint of blue peering from beneath her thick lashes caught his attention. She was watching him.
Frozen by her beauty—by all she meant to him and everything he tried to tell himself she didn’t—his thoughts left him. He fell closer, his hand dipping to her jaw line. Tracing the familiar contours of her face with a fingertip came as naturally as breathing.
“Riley…” The tangle of emotions in his chest loosened. The evidence was unmistakable, but she couldn’t have done it. Not the Riley he knew.
Contentment drifted behind those thick lashes. For a single moment the last twelve months of hell wasted away, and she was his again. His name spilled from her lips, soft and sweet, like no time had passed. God help him, he wanted it to be true. He’d give anything to go back to the day he lost her and change it all.
She reached for him, and when she drew him in he didn’t—couldn’t—resist. Her arms circled his neck, her fingers tangling in the hair she always said was too long, and every bit of the fight fled his traitorous heart. He forgot the cold, hard floor. He forgot why he had waited in her living room, untouched whiskey taunting him, tempering his rage.
He forgot murder.
Sarah and her husband of what he calls “many long, long years” live on the mid-Atlantic coast with their six young children, all of whom are perfectly adorable when they’re asleep. She never dreamed of becoming an author, but as a homeschooling mom she often jokes she writes fiction because if she wants anyone to listen to her, she has to make them up. (As it turns out, her characters aren’t much better than the kids.) When not buried under piles of laundry, she may be found adrift in the Atlantic (preferably on a boat) or in search of that ever-elusive perfect writing spot where not even the kids can find her. To learn more about her work in contemporary, historical, and supernatural romance and romantic suspense, please stalk accordingly.

#Review: THE WILD HUNT by Ron C. Nieto

This was an exceptionally well written fantasy, but it ended abruptly without tying up any of the story lines. I'm not a fan of authors who end their books on a major cliffhanger such as this. My first response is frustration which is not the best emotion to have after reading the book. That's the bad news.
The good news is that this is an engaging story full of magic, myths and legends about the fae. When Lily Boyd goes to visit her grandmother, she has no idea that she will be thrust into the middle of a faerie battle between two courts. When her grandmother goes missing, Lily stumbles around making mistake after mistake while her would-be savior kelpie Troy tries to guide her in her quest. Troy was an intriguing and well-written character and I'm sure there's much more to be learned about him. I didn't find Lily as likeable as Troy, but then again, the poor girl has been through so much in such a short time. I hope in the next book, the author will paint her in a stronger light. Fans of fantasy and all things faerie will enjoy this book, but be warned that it ends on a major cliff hanger.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

India Drummond knew from age nine that writing would be her passion. Since then she’s discovered many more, but none quite so fulfilling as creating a world, a character, or a moment and watching them evolve into something complex and compelling. She has lived in four countries and four American states, is a dual British and American citizen, and is currently on sabbatical in Bologna, Italy where she is writing her next epic fantasy novel.
