#Excerpt: WHEN AN OMEGA SNAPS by Eve Langlais

Leo was just minding his own business when he heard someone shout, “Heads up! Or is that heads down?”Thunk.Either way it didn’t matter. Leo caught the Frisbee with his noggin, which, given he was in the lobby of the condo complex he lived in, didn’t impress him one bit. Some might have acted on that irritation—gone after the Frisbee tosser and scalped her. Others would have engaged in an unladylike tussle. But as the Pride’s omega, he had a certain standard to adhere to. Leo let the irritation roll off his really wide—so wide the college football coach almost cried when he wouldn’t play—shoulders. With a nonchalance and calm that Leo strove to teach others, he kept walking toward the elevator, which happened to be where the purple disc landed. He refrained from crushing it. No need to blame the disc just because its thrower had poor aim.An unfamiliar scent—feline and delicious—surrounded and brushed past him as a woman skipped by, intent on the Frisbee. The blonde, whom he didn’t recognize, stooped over to grab the plastic disc, her cropped athletic shorts molding every curve of her made-for-gripping ass and nibble-worthy thighs.Everything about her was big, bold, and luscious.Yummy. And it wasn’t just his inner beast that thought so.Who is this delicious handful? He didn’t recall meeting her, and he certainly wouldn’t have forgotten her.The unknown woman straightened and faced him, and by face him, he meant almost eye to eye, which was unheard of given he boasted a height of almost seven feet. Yet this woman with the wicked curves must have stood at least six foot one or a touch more. She wasn’t dainty, not by any stretch, not with the way her impressive breasts strained at her T-shirt, distorting the cartoon on it that said, Delicate Freakn’ Flower. Her indented waist was accented by the flare of her hips, the quirk of her lips matched by the mirth in her eyes. While not a man to allow himself to indulge in strong emotion, Leo was suddenly possessed of a powerful urge to drag this woman into his arms and…do decadent things that would get even his steady heart racing.“Well, hello there, big fellow. I don’t think we’ve met.”Indeed they hadn’t, or he would have remembered her—and remembered to avoid her because anyone could see by the saucy tilt to her hips and the appraising look in her eye that she spelled trouble.Leo didn’t do trouble. He preferred calm moments. Serene outings. Quiet evenings. Very quiet. A quiet she disrupted with her Frisbee antics, so he took her to task. “You’re not supposed to play Frisbee inside. It’s one of the association rules.” He’d know since he helped draft them.Leo liked rules, and he expected people to follow them. When any group of predators lived in close proximity, keeping hot tempers under control was important, hence his job to enforce the edicts and keep the peace.“Aw, come on. Are you telling me there’s no playing inside either?” Her plump lower lip jutted. “Do you know I got in trouble by a nice policeman for playing on the street? Which was totally unfair. As if it was my fault that guy wasn’t pay attention and rear ended someone at the red light.”“You were playing in the road?”“Road, sidewalk, does it really matter? What’s more important is, if I can’t play inside, and I can’t play outside, where is a girl supposed to play?”Upstairs, eleventh floor, condo unit 1101. His bedroom had plenty of room. Of course the sport he pictured didn’t involve any props. Nor did it include any clothes. But telling her she could play with him naked probably wasn’t the answer she looked for. “We don’t play in the city. Not enough room. That’s what the ranch is for.”“Ah, the farm. That place is still around? Awesome.”“You know of it?” He frowned. While not a closely guarded secret, only those with permission were allowed on the property. Since Leo tended to curate that list, he tended to know anyone who visited. But he couldn’t place her. “Who are you? I don’t think I’ve seen you around before.”“Yeah, it’s been a while since I visited. That’s what happens when a girl gets banned for a few years because of a few silly misunderstandings. Explode one carved pumpkin and people lose their minds. I see the lobby got repainted, no permanent harm done.”Banned? Wait a second. He did know who this lady was. He’d heard Arik mention something about a cousin on his father’s side visiting for a bit. His words were actually, “Damned uncle asked me to let the brat come and hide out for a bit while some kind of calamity blows over in her hometown.”To which Leo replied, “You know you can use the word ‘no’. I find it quite effective if I don’t want to get embroiled in unsavory situations.” The word no helped prevent a lot of unnecessary chaos.Arik had laughed. “Say no to my uncle? Not happening. You haven’t met him yet. He’s the one guy I know who would make you look normal sized and when he’s not threatening to twist you into a pretzel, he’s the nicest guy you ever met. He’s also besieged by a set of troublemaking daughters.”Both of whom had been banned by the previous pride alpha for causing too much damage and being a general nuisance. While she had only recently arrived, Leo could already understand why the old king banished her. “You’re that troublemaker from out West, aren’t you?” “Me, a troublemaker?” She fluttered her lashes. The problem was, with a mouth like hers, twisted into a smirk, she failed at the whole innocent look. “No, that’s my sister, Teena. I’m Meena, her twin, more commonly known as catastrophe. But you can call me your mate.”With that, she flung herself on him and planted a big, juicy smooch on his lips. And he liked it.Rawr.

I should warn you that I possess a twisted imagination and a sarcastic sense of humor something I like to let loose in my writing. I enjoy strong alpha males, and shifters. Lots of big, overprotective shifters. I am also extremely partial to aliens, the kind who like to abduct humans and then drive them insane...with pleasure. Do you like something a little darker? Then check out my cyborgs whose battle with humanity have captivated readers worldwide.
I love to write, and while I don't always know what my mind is going to come up with next, I can promise it will be fun, probably humorous and most of all romantic, because I love a happily ever after.

#Excerpt: WHERE WOLVES TALK by D.L. Lewis

Twilight was too short in this world; expressing itself in a brief moment of pale-purple light that came and went in a tantalizing flash. As the lavender glow vanished, darkest night swallowed the forest in a voracious bite; making it cry out in noises far colder than those of the warm pleasant morn: sounds dreadfully opposite to the birdsong and happy chatter that filled the wood earlier in the day. The force expressing itself now was redolent of hunger, fear, and longing: growls and whimpers punctuated by the staccato of scrabbling feet; whinings and whirrings that bespoke pursuit and flight; shrill screams articulating the futile desperation that comes before a violent end. The fur along Kitten’s spine rose. Such terrors were foreign to a beloved house pet. In this wild, hungry place each and every bush could conceal a lurking predatory animal; a lion, perhaps, who would think nothing of making the cat into its evening meal. In his Lady’s house, the tabby had been king of beasts; the only beast, if truth be told, aside from an occasional mouse who might cross his path and flee at the sight of the tiny tiger. Excepting his Lady’s water atomizer, Kitten had found nothing to fear in his house. But this place: this wild, hungry place where a Shorthair counted as no more than a tasty dish; this wild, hungry place where rustlings and crunches seemed not mere noises but harbingers of impending death—this wild, hungry place was dreadful.

BLURB:Kitten learns of a passage hidden in his Lady's library: the Door, which leads to an unknown world. The cat has been told that the source of all evil dwells openly in this place. The feline is eager to fight the sinister personage and goes through the Door with no hesitation.
The tabby finds himself in what appears to be a forest like any other in England. It doesn't take long for him to learn that this is a very different place.
Written in the basic style of classic stories like THE LORD OF THE RINGS, WATERSHIP DOWN, and THE CHRONICLES OF NARNIA, this novel can be appreciated on different levels. To some readers, it's an allegorical tale: thought-provoking and filled with symbolism. To others, it's an adventure-filled page-turner.

Interview with Louisa Lo, BEFORE VENGEANCE

Can you give us a brief overview of your latest book? Is it part of a series?
My latest book. BEFORE VENGEANCE, is a prequel of my debut novel, VENGEANCE BE MINE (the Cosmic Balance series). The original book is the story about a girl, Megan, who goes to university to get certified as a vengeance demon. Along the way, she made friends with a fellow student called Serafina. Serafina was switched at birth by a race of fae called the changelings and only got released back to the vengeance plane the year before. After VENGEANCE BE MINE, I started thinking about Serafina and her backstory, and BEFORE VENGEANCE was born. Turns out, Serafina grew up with the changeling prince whose twin sister she was switched with. In BEFORE VENGEANCE, he does everything he can to keep Serafina on the changeling plane because failing to do so means losing the girl he loves and gaining a rival to the throne. But Serafina is no doormat and she starts questioning his true motivation…
What factors influenced your decision to self-publish your book(s)?It’s a business decision and it’s a creative decision. I have a business background, and a decade in entertainment accounting had provided me with some pretty good skills and instincts. I also had some bad experiences with traditional publishing where my work was changed to the point of being completely unrecognizable. So I decided to own my writing career. Success or failure, at least it is my risk and my reward. I find that I work much better that way.
If you used a graphic designer, how involved were you during the creative process for your cover?Very involved, to the point of being neurotic—lol. Every one of my covers started with a custom photo shoot. I love choosing the models, blocking the poses, picking out the outfits, etc. I also get involved with deciding the background images, the photo touch ups, and even the font used. I know that doing the custom photo shoots is quite the large cash outflow at the beginning of my career, but the final products have a very unified and professional look that I’ll be proud of for years to come.
What is your writing process? Do you listen to music or do you like silence?Due to years of classical training, when I hear music I couldn’t help but turn my critical ear up for techniques, sound quality, and even hidden meanings behind the songs. I tune all that out when I listen for recreation, but when I write, I’ve already got my hands full drowning out the inner critic, so I would rather have radio silence. As for my overall writing process, I plot, I write until I’m stuck, then I reconcile my finances. It might sound strange, but because I am completely left and right brain balanced, doing math actually recharges my creative side. By the time I finish recording my month-end expenditures, my muse is well-rested and ready to come out and play again.
Do you outline your story or just go where your muse takes you?I do big picture outlines on a spreadsheet, look for major structural flaws and fix them before over-invested in writing time, then I jot down little notes here and there next to each scene. I try not to sweat over the little things because my muse is always three steps ahead of me. There are things I’m simply not meant to see until I get there.
Did you hire an editor to review your manuscript before publishing?I spend a lot of money on editing because quality control is very important to me. I always say I would rather have three good books out there than nine crappy ones.
There are a few layers to my editing process:
-Beta Reading-Developmental Edit (big picture stuff)-Copy/Line/Clean-Up-Whatever-the-Hell-Needs-Cleaning-Up Edit-Final proof read-First Read by Friends and Family (they always managed to pick something up no matter how thorough the edit was).
What kinds of marketing [twitter, facebook, blog, forums] are you involved with for promoting your book(s)? I’m still trying to figure out the best way to promote myself. Being a trained accountant in my other life, twitter is a nightmare for me because I find myself looking at my un-posted tweets using five different angles, trying to see the legal implications in giving opinions on one thing or another. That’s way too much work for 140 characters. I do much better with facebook. If you message me there, my response rate is 100% and often within twelve hours. I manage to connect one-on-one with a lot of readers using that platform. I remember once hearing an author say that there are points in your career when the best marketing you can do is to write the next book. I think that’s applicable to big names who have already gained the critical mass, but also for authors at the beginning of their careers. Right this moment, for the genre I’m in, I think getting the third book done is most important. But I’m so happy to dip my toes into the marketing water by doing this book tour. The reviews, the readers’ responses…that’s what keep me going in the actual writing process.
Besides writing, do you have any other passions?I love watching documentaries, dancing the tango, singing, designing board games, playing with my cat and niece, and filing taxes (just kidding, I like the great surge of creativity AFTER I file taxes, see question #4).
Some fun facts about you, which do you prefer – dogs or cats? Chocolate or vanilla? Coffee or Tea? Talk or Text? Day or Night?
Cats who think they’re dogs (mine do). Half-chocolate, half-vanilla soft serve ice cream cones. Hate both coffee and tea (I’m an orange juice girl). Talk because with auto-correct I can offend a lot of people with texting. Day because I’m a night owl and my inner editor is too tired to stop me when I write in sunlight.
What’s next for you?I’m writing the third book in the Cosmic Balance series called HELL HATH NO VENGEANCE. I’m hoping to get it published by the end of the year.

#Review: WHAT TO DO WITH A DUKE by Sally MacKenzie

When the Spinster House position becomes available, Catherine Hutting has a chance to leave her loud and demanding family, even if it's only to move across the street. She has sworn off marriage and longs for peace and quiet so she can pursue her dream of writing. Everything changes when the Duke of Hart comes to Loves Bridge to oversee the selection of the next spinster to inhabit Spinster House. Marcus can't help but believe in the curse of his ancestors dying before a son is born because it has happened for the past 200 years to each Duke of Hart. He knows his deadly clocks starts ticking down the moment he marries and the Duchess conceives his son. He has no desire to die and has sworn off marriage for as long as he can.
This book started out very interesting and I loved Cat's feisty personality when dealing with Marcus about becoming the next tenant in Spinster House, but it soon became very repetitive, enforcing over and over the curse that could kill Marcus. The story would have been much more enjoyable if at least half of these were eliminated. While it was fun watching the evolution of the relationship between Cat and Marcus, I was disappointed when the book ended without solving the one thread the author stressed over and over again. This ruined the book for me and I'm not sure I'll be interested in what happens by the time the next book in the series is published.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.

I love to read, write, paint (walls and paper). I have a love/hate relationship with chocolate, grammar, and technology and would rather hang out with a dog, than a cat. I prefer creating things to cleaning things, and believe laughter is a one-stop-shop solution to all that ails you. You will always find a purple wall (or two) in my house (currently in my writing room), and there may or may not be a hidden passageway that leads to a mystery room. (Okay, so you won't find a hidden passageway, but a girl can dream, can't she?) Oh, and tea. There will always be tea.
My writing style has been described as edgy and rule-breaking, and by some--a touch Tim Burton-esque. Because of this, I am often referred to as the Quentin Tarantino of YA among writing friends.

#Excerpt: MAGE ASSASSIN by KR Yaddof

“Oh, David.” She blushed and looked down. “I love you, too.”
“It is more than love.” He knelt down and looked up into her surprised face. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the box. Enveloping her left hand in his, he said, “Abigail Evelyn Lattimore, will you marry me?”
“Oh, my God, David!” Her hands flew to her mouth, eyes wide. She stared down at him, tears forming in her eyes. She glanced at the ring and exclaimed, “Yes! Yes, of course, I will!”
And then she was in his arms. He spun her around in elation, only stopping to kiss her. Her hands went to his face as he held her against him, and he kissed her harder than he ever had in his life. Pure joy surrounded them, and he could feel the aquamarine in the necklace she wore warming against his chest. He pulled away only to slip the diamond ring on her finger. She admired it as it also started to glow.
“Your magic approves,” he said, kissing her again. She was a white mage and had fantastical healing powers. He could feel her happiness vibrating between them and even lighting the coral in his own boar’s head ring his father had given him when he joined the service. He sighed and added, “Even if your father doesn’t.”

BLURB:Captain David Trinidad is the best soldier the New Republic of Texas can find to pull off a secret mission that will decide the fate of the small country. He’s been raised in his military family to do anything to help his homeland.
