Peach and Orange Flower Old Fashioned

Peach and Orange Flower Old Fashioned

There’s a reason we talk about the weather here in New Orleans.  It’s not small talk.  Hardly.

We talk about it because in the summer it is ever-present and unpredictable.  The weather has a sense of humor enough to know when you’ve gone into the grocery store, leaving your umbrella in the backseat of your car.  It’s kind enough to create wind strong enough to trim your trees for you… whether you wanted them trimmed or not.

Let It Be Tuesday!

Let It Be Tuesday!

This list of weekend reads was supposed to come your way on Sunday.  That didn’t happen and I have a slight sunburn on my shoulders… such are the hazards (and joys) of summer living.  I played hooky.  We’re all allowed every once in a while, right?

This week I took a solo roadtrip to Ponce De Leon, Florida where they have the most temperate, mossy, magical fresh water spring.

Cajun Stuffed Tomatoes Over Creamy Grits

Cajun Stuffed Tomatoes Over Creamy Grits

If I’m a tomato (stay with me… we’re in this together).

If I’m a tomato, hanging out with the rest of my tomato buddies, piled together on a grocery display I might daydream about the things I could become.   A tomato, lazing around, thinking about its potential. I’ve come so far afterall… from flower, to green, to ripe, to picked.  I’ve avoided bug predators, I’ve managed a trip on a truck, I’ve been manhandled and squeezed, maybe dropped on my bottom.

Monday Meditations

Monday Meditations

I spent most of the past weekend working, which… far from a humble brag, is actually a very bad habit.  I took some time Sunday afternoon to sit, paint, and really… just clear my mind enough to think beyond work tasks and more about how what I’m doing everyday feels.  A little bit of Sunday afternoon navel gazing isn’t so bad for the soul.

A few months back I had a birthday… one of those milestone birthdays that had me taking stock of the things I’ve done and accumulated, had me briefly check in on my neck wrinkles, and had me send a passing thought to that retirement fund check I’ve been meaning to send off.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

Hello my friends.  We’re staring August straight in the face and I’m ashamed to say that I haven’t really made the time to treat myself to summer.  Of course I’m talking about my Summer Bucket List.  How are your summer days coming along? I hope you have a few new freckles on your shoulder and maybe a little sand in weird places.  That’s just a sign of good living, right?

Franks and Beans. Yes, Franks and Beans.

Franks and Beans. Yes, Franks and Beans.

My savory brain is in charge these days.

By ‘savory brain’ I mean that all I want to eat are hot dogs, bacon, and cheese.  You know, summer diet. (Did I mention?… Weird amounts of cheese.)  I don’t know.  Someone shake me to my senses (or bring more cheese and bacon THANKS!).

Today I’m bringing you a homemade mashup of a dish made famous (in my heart) by canned pork and beans and my grandmother’s baked beans.

Let It Be Sunday!

Let It Be Sunday!

I don’t much like the news this week.  I don’t much like it at all.  I’m tired of the Republicans yelling at me.  I’m tired of hearing people dissect all of the yelling that they did, as if I needed some sort of translation.  I’m preemptively shrinking away at the Democrats yelling at me because I don’t much want to hear or dissect that either.  This election cycle is just… is it over yet?

A Peek Inside The Guest Room!

A Peek Inside The Guest Room!

Hi friends!

If you’ll remember, a few months ago I moved from a tiny (petite and really quite charming) apartment, and into my first house.  I say my first house as if I’ll somehow get to buy a bunch… let’s just go with it.

I’ve been slowly putting the house together.  That involves hiring men stronger than me to hang shelves, glue tile up the wall,  unwrap rugs, iron bedskirts (an actual thing I did and was like… OK THIS IS ADULTHOOD).

Turkey Meatloaf Sliders on Cheddar Potato Biscuits

Turkey Meatloaf Sliders on Cheddar Potato Biscuits

Let’s talk about small things with big impact.

Baby cats:  fluffy, hoppy, wide-eyed, clever, undeniably cute… we’ll call them kittens and let them rule the Internet.

Baby dogs:  dopey, big-pawed, gregarious, and sweet… we’ll call them puppies and occasionally let them interact with baby cats on the Internet because we like variety in our fluff.

Baby burgers:  bite-sized but ample, party-ready,  Summer-ready, totally snackable, someone please inflate the pool toys, did you bring beer, these are perfect … we’ll call them sliders and make them by the dozens and wave our neighbors over to get in on the goodness.
