Do We Need an E-book Review Site?
E-books are growing in popularity; we all know that. Romances have led the way (as usual), but mysteries are starting to pop up.
I'm finding there aren't many sites for readers of mystery e-books to find out what's out there. My publisher for GO HOME AND DIE, Red Rose Publishing, has just a few mystery listings, and very few reviewers seem to be offering opinions on e-books in this genre.
Wouldn't it be nice, as a reader, to have a list of recommended titles? And it WOULD be nice, as a writer, to have a place to send my work for review and maybe a little publicity.

Mystery E-books for Writers and E-readers
E-book Readers and Writers
For some time it has bothered me that there seems to be no site online where a person can read about ONLY mysteries published as e-books. With some trepidation and a lot of help, I’ve decided to attempt to change that. A friend has established a blog that will be dedicated solely to mysteries that are e-published. The submission process is somewhat experimental right now, but the plan is that authors will tell us about their books, following the template found on the site. Please be careful to do exactly as asked, or your book will not be listed. We will not list self-pubbed books, and mystery—the solution of a crime--must be the dominant theme.
If you’d like to submit a book for consideration, go to the site : http://mysterebooks.blogspot.com. There you will find the template and a sample submission. Submit the completed post to mysterebooks@yahoo.com, and we’ll let you know the date of its appearance on MysterEbooks. We’ll also promote the site so that readers learn where they can go to find e-mysteries.
If you are a reader of mysteries on electronic devices, visit us often to read about new options for e-reading!

E-reading
Notice how everything we do nowadays is e-something? We e-publish, e-market, e-mail, e-conference, and e-read. Well, here's news. I just joined that last bunch. I own an e-reader.
It's a very cool toy, but honestly, I didn't buy it for status or from geeky techno-awe. I felt like I needed to understand the market that I entered this year when GO HOME AND DIE and HER HIGHNESS' FIRST MURDER both became e-books.
How does the thing work? What can a person do with it? Does it really feel like reading? These are questions I had until yesterday. At first glance, the answers seem to be "easily", "all sorts of things I had not imagined" and "yes, it does." As soon as I get some time, I will discover the deeper answers which will tell me if e-reading is really for me. Stay tuned.

I Can Stop Anytime I Want
Okay, so I bought an e-reader. And I had to try it out, of course, so I downloaded a book my husband has been wanting to read (and tricked him into trying the thing and finding out how easy it is to use. HA!)
Then, of course, I had to download my e-book (GO HOME AND DIE) to see what it looks like to my readers.
I heard from an online contact who likes my work, and I thought about her first book, which I read and really liked, so I tried her name, and there she was, an e-book author. So of course, I bought her book.
Do you see where this is going? Financial ruin, reading bliss, a TBR list stacking up in my little hand-held wonder. Am I happy? Of course!

E-readers, Kindle, and Nook--Oh, My!
I belong to several on-line chat groups for authors (probably too many). The gist of what's going on is that authors are catching on to the e-book revolution, some reluctantly, some anxiously, some willingly. It's scary, because a lot of things change with e-books.
For example: you don't need an agent to publish an e-book. You don't even need a publisher, if you're willing to do some homework. There isn't that assurance that some of us need that we've got professionals behind us. Then again, some authors have felt for some time that there really isn't an Oz behind the curtain.
You do still need an editor, but there's an interesting change there, too. When an author hires an editor, she maintains more control over the book. An employee, the hired editor, SUGGESTS changes, where a publishing-house editor tends to DEMAND them. One I had a few years back kept prefacing his proposed changes with "I want..." I began thinking, "Whose book is this? It's my name on the cover!" When you disagree with a pub-house editor, you can fight with them (I have) or you can give in (I've done that, too). When you hire an editor, you are wise to listen to what they advise, to get your money's worth and to recognize what objective readers will see in the work you love so much. But if you love it the way it is, it's up to you.
A current discussion in my chat groups is ISBNs. Once considered mandatory for a professional publication, questions have arisen about them for e-books. They're expensive, and if you're only going to publish electronically, you have other options. (If a book goes into print, the ISBN would be different anyway.)
Of course, traditional publishing is pulling on the reins, and I think they have to. It would be a mistake to let every joker who thinks he/she can write throw a book at us and make the pool of candidates for panels, awards, and reviews so large it's beyond managability. Rules are established, and even if some authors don't like them, they keep us honest. Yes, someone read my book other than my sister. Yes, my publisher works with multiple authors and does not guarantee publication or charge me for publishing.
Still, the publishing world is changing, so quickly that we can hardly keep up. Some predict that books will soon come out initially as e-books. If they do well, someone will take the chance and put them into print for libraries and those who love "real" books. My February release, THE DEAD DETECTIVE AGENCY, is e-book and POD. I like that, because I will have physical copies for display and electronic copies for all those people who have never met me.
E-publishing is ecologically better, quicker, and easier. Like Dorothy and her friends, authors are treading with caution into the forest of e-books. Our sense of "Oh, my!" is fear for some, awe for others, and for the un-cowardly: "Look at all the possibilites!"

Peg's Blog Crawl
You've heard of a pub crawl. Well, this is the same except it's not.
Same: You "crawl" from one place to another with a lot of other people and read my guest posts.
Different: It's virtual: no taxis, no traffic, no crowded rooms.
Same: You "travel" with like-minded people who are out for a good time.
Different: You'll never see them face-to-face.
Same: You meet new people, visit new places, and enjoy the trip.
Different: No hangover at the end.
Peg's Blog Crawl begins tomorrow, January 31, at my regular blog: http://itsamysterytomepegherring.blog.... My topic is the English language, its origins, its variety, its general craziness. I've named it "Do the Dead Speak Perfect English?" in honor of my February release, THE DEAD DETECTIVE AGENCY.
Did I mention prizes? I'm giving away a book each week, either print or e-book, as the winning commenters choose. I also have some little surprises along the way, so join in and chime in (that's how you enter the prize drawings). You can indulge every weekday in February, learning a little about the eccentricities of English, and you won't have to crawl home!

Real Books, E-books, and My Books
A woman I've known for months said to me yesterday, "I hear you wrote a book!"
Yup. And another, and another, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
I have to stop and think when someone asks me how many books I have out, because there are different versions, different publishers, and different formats. Oh, and different prices!
Here's how it goes:
***MACBETH'S NIECE is out of print in regular, still out in large print and on Kindle.
http://www.amazon.com/Macbeths-Niece-... ($2.99)
***GO HOME AND DIE is only on Kindle and doesn't seem destined to be anywhere else.
http://www.amazon.com/Go-Home-and-Die... ($5.99)
***HER HIGHNESS' FIRST MURDER is available in hardcover, large print, and on Kindle.
http://www.amazon.com/Highness-First-... ($24.79 or $7.99)
***The sequel, POISON, YOUR GRACE, is recently out in hardcover, soon to be in large print, and should be made available on Kindle soon, but the publisher hasn't made that decision yet.
http://www.amazon.com/Poison-Your-Gra... ($25.95)
***THE DEAD DETECTIVE AGENCY is available in paperback and for all e-readers.
http://www.amazon.com/Dead-Detective-... ($11.32 or $3.99) SEQUEL, DEAD FOR THE MONEY, is due out in the spring, just finished the final edit!
***SHAKESPEARE'S BLOOD is available for Kindle and Nook.
http://www.amazon.com/Shakespeares-Bl... ($2.99)
***SOMEBODY DOESN'T LIKE SARAH LEIGH is on Kindle but not available for Nook until March.
http://tinyurl.com/88eph4s (Currently on sale at 99 cents)
Crazy, isn't it?
Why? It boils down to decisions that are usually out of my hands. Some publishers market primarily to libraries, so they create sturdy (expensive) books. Some market mostly or completely on the Net. Some do both.
It seems the most available book format is e-books, and Amazon leads the pack with 70% of sales. When a publisher decides on a direction, I'm pretty sure that has a huge impact. So when you ask me how many of my books you can get, the answer will vary. It depends on how you're going to get them!
If you missed one or want to know what a particular book is about, I've just redone my website, http://pegherring.com, and all the info is there. (It's wonderful, and I can say that because I didn't do it!)

Oh, Those Blog Tours!
They'll tell you an author can't succeed without them, but at a certain point, this one sure wishes she could!
My blog tour for DEAD FOR THE MONEY starts this week, and the schedule is printed below. There are of course prizes if you're willing to visit blogs and make comments between now and June 7th (even comments on this blog will work). LL Publications provided invaluable help with the tour in the form of a publicist who contacted all the bloggers and made dates for me to visit. But somebody has to write all those posts, and wouldn't you know it, they expect the author to do it!
Different bloggers want different things, so if you visit one of the sites below, you might find interviews with Seamus about what it's like to be a cross-back or you might get my view of some aspect of writing. The killer part of it is getting all the posts to line up so that Post 1 links to Post 2, which links to Post 3 and back to Post 1. You can see how this would confuse a tiny mind like mine.
Anyway, here's the schedule. Please stop in from time to time and comment. You could win a book or a T-shirt, or get you name in Dead Detective Book #3. Besides, I love hearing from people!

Getting a Kindle for Christmas
If the gifts under your tree include a Kindle, or even if you already have one, this story is for you, because I'm giving away my book, GO HOME AND DIE, at the Kindle store from December 25-29th.
People sometimes ask why authors would do such a thing (and why Amazon would let them!). Here are my two reasons, one of which Amazon shares.
The big reason is exposure. If someone reads a book and likes it, the hope is they'll read more by that author making both Amazon and the author money. You might have noticed that a lot of freebie books are the first of a series. We clever authors get you hooked and then charge you for the next installment. Hey, all's fair in apparently everything these days.
The other reason I'm giving away GO HOME AND DIE (and my big one) is that it's a second edition. I didn't like the way it was done the first time, so I got the rights back and had it re-edited, re-formatted, and even re-covered. I'm very happy, and I felt I owed those who bought the original version a chance to see what it should have been like to begin with.
So what is GO HOME AND DIE about? It's a '60s era mystery set in Flint, Michigan. I have a fondness for the story because I lived in Flint in the late '60s, because Carrie is a lot like I was then--naive, and because John helped with the flashbacks to Vietnam.
If you have a Kindle, give it a try. (If you have a different e-reader, it will take a while, but it will eventually appear there, too.)
