The Qur’an, on killing innocent people

For that cause, We decreed for the Children of Israel that whoever kills a person except for murder or corruption in the land, it’s as if he had killed all humankind.  But whoever saves a life, it’s as if he had saved the life of all humankind.  Our messengers had come to them [Read More...]

The Church issues a strong statement on religious freedom

I judge it highly unlikely that this statement was issued at this particular time by sheer chance, without any connection to recent proposals that would monitor, register, round up, ban, and/or expel Muslims for the simple fact of their religious faith:   http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article...   I’m very pleased.

Credit where credit is due

I always try to thank people who bring interesting items to my attention (often for use on my blog).   It’s plainly the right thing to do, and — self-interestedly — I hope that they’ll continue to alert me to good stuff.   But I forgot to thank Phillip Carthew yesterday for the [Read More...]

Perhaps the single most offensive, disgusting newspaper column I’ve ever read in the United States

Linda Stasi, writing in the New York Daily News, has taken American opinion journalism to a remarkable new low:   http://www.nydailynews.com/news/natio...   Fourteen people were killed by two radical Islamist murderous in San Bernardino last week.   But she recognizes only thirteen innocent victims.   The fourteenth, Nicholas Thalasinos, essentially deserved what he [Read More...]

New Testament 328

John 16:29-33   Jesus is confident here that, even though the disciples will be scattered, he won’t be alone because the Father will be with him.   I think, though, that even he may have been surprised by what he would soon experience during the process of the Atonement.  Because, for a period [Read More...]

“But they were filled with confusion, and began to do penance.”

“It was said of Abba John the Persian that when some evildoers came to harm him, he took a basin and wanted to wash their feet.  But they were filled with confusion, and began to do penance.” From the “Sayings of the Desert Fathers”   I can’t help but be reminded of Alma 24 – a remarkable [Read More...]
