“Bite the Wax Tadpole: A Manifesto for Internet Conversation and Debate”

As a grizzled veteran of online interactions (and, at least as often, of online failures to actually interact), I really got a kick out of these thoughts from Jonathan Max Wilson, another experienced (though as yet ungrizzled) veteran:   http://www.sixteensmallstones.org/bit...

“Reign of Judges: The Title of Liberty”

David Wills brought this interesting project to my attention (all the way from Adelaide, Australia):   http://www.reignofjudgesmovie.com   I hadn’t heard of it.     As you can see on this page (and my collection of images isn’t exhaustive), Moroni and his “Title of Liberty” have been a popular subject for [Read More...]

“Hearing Cosmic Harmony Again” Online

I was pleased and surprised to learn (from a reader of this blog called “dangerdad”) that a videotape of my 2013 Summerhays Lecture for the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at BYU is up online.  I hadn’t been aware of that, or, if I had been aware, had forgotten it:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6UuPr... “America: Imagine the World Without Her”

My wife and I just returned from seeing Dinesh D’Souza’s America: Imagine a World Without Her:   http://www.americathemovie.com   My brother-in-law saw it a few days ago and liked it, although he thought the last quarter or third of it too overtly political.   I thoroughly enjoyed it, and recommend it to anybody [Read More...]

A modest wish

A tsunami of unaccompanied Central American children is overwhelming our border.  ISIS is redrawing the map of the Middle East, and has recently announced a new “caliphate.”  Vladimir Putin is wreaking murderous havoc in the Ukraine.  The Veterans Administration is mired in scandal, as is the IRS.  Violence in the Arab/Israeli [Read More...]

“‘War of Words and Tumult of Opinions’: The Battle for Joseph Smith’s Words in Book of Mormon Geography”

This week’s publication in Interpreter: A Journal of Mormon Scripture is Neil Rappleye’s review of John L. Lund, Joseph Smith and the Geography of the Book of Mormon:   http://www.mormoninterpreter.com/war-...   The journal is now well past its one hundredth consecutive week of publication, and I’m grateful to all those — certainly including the authors [Read More...]

“A Place for Book of Mormon Research”

My friend and former Maxwell Institute colleague Matt Roper runs an interesting blog entitled Ether’s Cave.  It’s well worth some time:   http://etherscave.blogspot.com   It’s the kind of thing that the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies, or FARMS — now the Maxwell Institute — was founded to do.

Vladimir I contemplates his work

Hearty thanks to Chris365 for creating these!     Do you remember how Mr. Obama derided Mitt Romney when Governor Romney described Vladimir Putin’s Russia as the Number One contemporary geopolitical enemy of the United States?   Ridiculous, right?   Vladimir’s a lamb.     Do you recall Secretary of State Hillary Clinton presenting [Read More...]
