Michelle Paver’s THIN AIR To Orion

Jon Wood, Publisher of the Orion Publishing Group has acquired Michelle Paver’s ghost story THIN AIR from Peter Cox of Redhammer. Orion has secured World Rights and will publish in hardback and ebook on 6 October 2016.

THIN AIR is a spine-tingling ghost story set in the Himalayas during the golden age of mountaineering.

Michelle’s Jamaican Red Peas Soup

If you’ve watched the video on this site of Michelle explaining how she wrote Fever Hill, you’ll know she talks about her favorite recipe, Jamaican Red Pea Soup. Well, here it is –very warming on a winter’s day – enjoy!

Ingredients

- 1lb (500g) casserole steak or shin of beef, chopped into smallish pieces

- lib (500g) diced smoked gammon

- 3 tins of cooked red kidney beans, drained

- 3-4 large sweet potatoes or yams, peeled and chopped into smallish pieces

- 2-3 large onions, peeled and chopped

- 3 green, red or yellow peppers, chopped

- one hot chilli pepper (NOT chopped; leave it whole)

- 4-5 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed

- 2-3 pints (1.25-1.75 litres) beef stock

- Olive oil

- thyme, salt, black pepper to taste

Instructions

Heat 2-3 tbsp olive oil in a stockpot (or other very large, lidded pot) on top of the stove, then add onions, peppers  (but  not the chili pepper), and garlic and cook over a low heat with lid on, till softened. Add the beef, stir till slightly browned, then add the stock, thyme, salt, black pepper and chili pepper and cook over a low heat with lid on or slightly tilted for about an hour. Then add gammon and cook another half-hour. Finally, add beans and sweet potatoes (and your favorite dumplings, if  you like these)  – and cook for a further half hour.

CARE : Go easy on the salt to begin with, because you’ll be adding the salty gammon later. And when stirring, be careful not to break the chilli pepper, and remove it when the soup is finished – otherwise, someone will get a nasty surprise!

This is a very tolerant soup. You can eat it on its own, or with rice, or on toast if you can’t be bothered to cook rice. You can make it runny by adding more stock and/or water, or as thick a stew by adding orange lentils in the last half hour of cooking. It’s great with an avocado and tomato salad.

Major Film Deal For Michelle’s “Dark Matter”

Michelle’s highly acclaimed ghost story DARK MATTER is to be be filmed by one of Britain’s leading film production companies.  Producers Andrew Macdonald and Allon Reich of DNA Films are developing the project with Film4, Channel 4 Television’s feature film division.

Described as “Jack London meets Stephen King” by bestselling novelist Jeffery Deaver, DARK MATTER tells the story of a 1937 British expedition to the high Arctic.

“From the moment I read it”, says Andrew Macdonald, “I knew I had to produce it.  It is a classic ghost story, both haunting and visceral.  If MR James had visited the Arctic, this is what he’d have written.”

Andrew Macdonald is one of British’s most acclaimed film producers.  From Trainspotting to Dredd, by way of Shallow Grave, A Life Less Ordinary, The Beach, Never Let Me Go, 28 Days Later and The Last King of Scotland.

“I could have sold film rights to DARK MATTER dozens of times,”, says Michelle’s agent Peter Cox – “interest was unprecedented.  But Michelle loves and admires Andrew’s work, and when they met, it was clear that the understanding and chemistry was there.”

Acclaimed screenwriter and dramatist Dennis Kelly is adapting the work for film.  Dennis won the 2013 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for his adaption of Roald Dahl’s  MATILDA, and created the critically-acclaimed Channel 4 series UTOPIA.  He has also written BLACK SEA, which begins shooting later this year, to be directed by Kevin Macdonald and starring Jude Law.

Michelle will be talking to children and adults about her books. There will also be time for the visitors to ask questions. This will be about an hour long and after that there will be time for signing– so bring along your books!

The museum is having a team for this week based on Michelle’s books, Gods and Warriors – Bronsdolken. There will be workshops for children where you can make daggers and amulets!

14:00-15:00 Staff from the museum will be reading to children from Michelle’s books. Michelle will be present and will answer questions and sign books.

18:00-20:00 We ́re back at the Mediterranean Museum and Bagdad Café. This will be a presentation and a conversation between Michelle, Måns Gahrton and the public about writing historical novels for children. And specifically about writing interesting and exciting stories while at the same time getting the history right.

The public will be able to engage in the conversation and ask questions.
