The Third Gate
I keep putting off doing a review for this because I keep thinking I should take a classy looking photo, something nice and in the sun or something. But then I forget, or get distracted. I am way too easily distracted. Anyway. The Third Gate, by Lincoln Child – enigmiologist Jeremy Logan (basically, he researches and explains the inexplicable) is hired by treasure hunter Porter Stone to figure out why things are going wrong at a dig under the Sudd, a murky swamp in Egypt. (I never thought about there being a swamp in Egypt, neat, eh?) The book is really quite good. Child has a knack for writing about the other worldly in a way that makes it feel real – the book feels like a normal action adventure thriller. Jeremy Logan is instantly likable and believable, as are, pretty much, all the characters. When we discover the tomb, the descriptions drew me in, full of wonder and creepiness. The Sudd is a fantastic place to hold a story, with it’s dankness and thick mats of vegetation The rearches have to have a state of the art set of platforms that create this interesting contrast between the modern and primordial. The book is an excellent page turner that keeps you going…I stayed up late reading it because I was engaged with the ideas – the modern concept of near death experiences contrasting with the Egyptian ideas of life after death made for compelling reading.
