Love of Legitimacy

So, who has two thumbs and a brand new membership to Romance    Writers of America? This girl. I am also trying to figure out if I am able to join Science Fiction Writers of America, but am unsure.  (I write a combination of Fantasy/romance/mystery so I could, technically, belong to all three.) Why is this so important, you might be wondering.  I mean, I belonged to other organizations, Epic and Broad Universe (I need to rejoin at least one of them…I let the memberships lapse because I was crap at utilizing  them) so why am I jumping up and down about this? Mostly, because legitimacy is hard to gain in the publishing world.  You  work hard, you create a perfect piece of work that has as much right to  shelf space as any other book, and you just do whatever you can to get  that book in front of people.  I’ve been lucky with my publishers — Dragonwell, in particular is doing some really wonderful things — and these independent publishers work just as hard to put out quality work as the big boys in New York do. You get your book, and you think, I might not have as many readers as  Neil Gaiman, but I am now his equal!  We are both published authors!   But you are wrong.  There are all sorts of little things that tell you that  you’re not. And one of them, at least up to recently, has been the fact that the major writer’s organizations wouldn’t let you in.  For ages, small press authors and self published authors were told no, you can’t hang with us, because no one judged that you were good enough to be published with the big presses.  Which, considering the amount of things that are written, is  kind of unfair. Thankfully, that attitude is changing.  Now I feel a little more real, a little more like a legit author.  Which is silly…I am well published, well  reviewed, well loved.  But still.  It is a good feeling.
