Time to Breathe
Well...I finally wrapped up Book 2 in The Golden Empire Series. It's available in eBook and paperback. Here's a description:
"With souls darkened by time and deeds, the Roberts Boys were resistant to compassion and love, and the ability to feel sympathy and empathy for others. They were blind, not only to the wants, desires, and dreams of others, but to the coming storm. A tempest was brewing beyond the control of the Roberts Boys. Their decisions and actions had created it, but there was no stopping it now. That violent storm was contained within Danny Vance. He was determined to bring these men to justice. Danny had the will to make them pay for their crimes; to make them suffer for murdering his friend and nearly ending his own life. To the Roberts Boys he'd be a dead man walking, and he was intent on bringing him Hell."
I suppose a reader could read Book 2 without checking out Book 1, but I hope that if you choose to read A Good Stock A Good Stock you'll start with A Branch Too Weak. A Branch Too Weak

https://www.amazon.com/dp/0578403609/...
So, what's next? Well, I need to take at least a week or two off from writing. But I'll start on Book 3, finish a companion book to Bootleggers, Booze, and Busts Bootleggers, Booze, and Busts: Prohibition in Kern County, 1919-1933, continue research for a book on Homesteading in the Greenhorn Mountains, and begin research on saloon culture in Bakersfield during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
All my best,
Richard

Summertime = Writing Season
Well...it's one of my favorite seasons of the year...summer! School is it and the weather is hot (too hot where I live in Bakersfield, California...it's pretty much the desert). We are surrounded by farmland and oilfields, so, you'd think that we would have a more temperate climate. But no...it is either approaching the heat of the outer rings of Hell, or it is what some would call cold (it can drop to the 20s, which is fine by me).
Typically, I teach Summer School, which is what I'm doing in a few weeks, but summer also allows for me to concentrate on writing. Currently, I'm half finished with book two of the Golden Empire series, which is a follow-up to A Branch Too Weak. A Branch Too WeakI'm also 3/4 of the way finished with a follow-up to the Bootlegger book. Bootleggers, Booze, and Busts: Prohibition in Kern County, 1919-1933 And there are odds and ends that I'm working on...distractions, really, to what I need to finish, but are the beginnings of new projects.
Just in case you're looking for something to read, and you like a deal, check out the following: The eBook version of A Branch Too Weak (Historical Fiction based on the California Gold Rush) is on sale for a discounted price on US Amazon beginning today at 8:00 am PST until June 10 at 8:00 am PST. If you have kindleunlimited, it's always free to read! https://www.amazon.com/Branch-Weak-Go...
It is also on sale for a discounted price on UK Amazon from June 8 at 8:00 am GMT to June 10 at 8:00 am GMT https://www.amazon.co.uk/Branch-Weak-...
Additionally, the audiobook is free if you sign up for a trial with audible https://www.amazon.com/Branch-Too-Wea...

A Branch Too Weak--an audiobook!
I'm pleased to announce that A Branch Too Weak (Book 1) has been produced into an audiobook. Using the voice and production talent of John Bell Williams, Jr., the book comes to life. With any luck, John will also be the narrator on Book 2 of the series.
If you get a chance to check it out, please do. There is an audio sample available, and if you join audible.com then you can get the audiobook version of this book.

Excuse me...you've put history into my historical fiction!
By profession I am a teacher and a historian. I love what I do, and it brings me great joy to research and paint a picture of the past. But therin lies my current problem. Currently, I have two books, one non-fiction, Bootleggers, Booze, and Busts: Prohibition in Kern County, 1919-1933, and one that is historical fiction, A Branch Too Weak.
I believe that it is historically irresponsible of me to write a work of fiction based on history without trying to weave an accurate portrayal of the time period. Literally, it pains me not to describe in relative detail the way people lived or the values they held dear. Unfortunately, that creates a situation for some readers that is cumbersome.
What do you think? Do you like your historical fiction with a healthy dose of actual history?

In the mood to write!
For me, writing is something I often do to relax. It takes me to another world, and I cannot wait to see where the characters and plot takes me next. But reality is, at times, a great escape, too!
Last weekend I spent some time in the Greenhorn Mountains, one of the locations my latest book, A Branch Too Weak, was set. I walked a portion of the Greenhorn Trail that is on my family's property, and wondered what the surroundings looked like 160 years ago. For a time I sat on some Indian rocks and marveled at the grooves in the granite that must have taken some time to make.
That time in the mountains was just what I needed to reinvigorate me and fill me with ideas I will incorporate into the second book of this series.
On a side note, if you are looking for something new to read, and you don't mind historical non-fiction, the eBook version of my book Bootleggers, Booze, and Busts: Prohibition in Kern County, 1919-1933 is available as a free download from 9/29 - 10/1.
Have a great weekend!
