Oxford China forum

At Oxford this weekend, attending the annual Oxford China Forum. My literature panel yesterday afternoon went very well indeed. I shared a stage with well-known writer Sheng Keyi, the author of the Northern Girls, among other things, and veteran Swedish translator Anna. G. Chen, who has translated works of Mo Yan, Yu Hua and so on, into Swedish. The session was skilfully moderated by Xiaoning Liu from SOAS. And it was so well organized. It was a full house at Oxford Union. How satisfying to see the young people keenly filing away so many questions! (Well, there was always one of two of them who were interested in making comments instead of asking questions.)

Leeds The featured writer at Leeds

I have the honor to be the featured writer at Leeds Center for Chinese Writing. This afternoon, I shared a stage with the wonderful award winning writer Yan Ge on a panel entitled “Women in China: Fiction and Reality”. In the first half of the seminar, I talked about Lotus, a novel about a migrant-turned sex worker and she talked about her novel The Chilli Bean Paste Clan about a man frequents prostitutes. I think we complemented each other beautifully. In the second half, we answered many questions from a packed audience about fiction, gender issues in China, prostitution and writing in English. I am so happy with the way it went.

Here’s Yan Ge’s wikie entry. Check her out.

The War For China Wallet

Today in Shanghai I had the great pleasure to share a lunch with Shaun Rein, the founder of a successful market research company (CMR) and a great speaker. We have spoken at quite a few events together in the past. He kindly gave me his latest book ‘The War For China’s Wallet’, which was endorsed by renowned Harvard professor Elizabeth Perry.

a profile written by a student

Recently I was interviewed by a Chinese student who is working on her MA at Goldsmiths, University of London. It is the best profile ever written about me. But I think the young student did a good job.

My winning of Mulan award

I am happy to announce that I won an award given by Mulan, a London based foundation which recognizes the achievement of Chinese women living in UK. So finally, I got something tangible to show off to my family. For more than 20 years, I’ve been working as a freelancer. In the eyes of my mother, I am jobless – 无业游民 – even though I’ve written books, published in the Guardian and the New York Times won fellowships and been featured in the BBC. Last night’s award ceremony gala dinner took place in the spectacular the Oriental Club. Thank you Mulan and all those who helped me to get there.
