10 out of 10 for TRUST!
The second TRUST update of the week is here, and it follows on the back of an absolutely wonderful 10/10 review from STARBURST magazine. “TRUST is a slow-burner and all the richer for it. The layers of characters and details of the story play out perfectly when matched with an ending you’re not likely to forget. It’s also an outstanding novel, delivers in more ways than one, and is worthy of a place on the discerning fan’s bookshelf.” Chapter 17 brings the second part of the novel to a close, and you can read it here.
I owe an apology to Craig Paton – the artist responsible for the book’s phenomenal artwork. Craig sent me a number of very cool mocked-up images which you can see making up the background of the cover, and I haven’t yet displayed them. I’m going to start putting that right today, and more of Craig’s illustrations will appear here in the coming weeks.
That’s all for now. Have a great weekend. Don’t forget – if you have a few minutes spare, you could always try and snag yourself a free copy of the limited edition hardcover of TRUST. Click here for details.

James Herbert (part 2) and a couple of plugs
Last night I had the honour of interviewing James Herbert again – this time at Foyles in London, in front of a sell-out audience of more than 200 people. As I said in my previous piece, it’s hard to quantify the effect James’ books have had on me and on my writing. I don’t profess to have slavishly read everything he’s written, but his style, approach, attitude and (of course) his success are an inspiration to anyone who writes horror. There’s no doubt in my mind that discovering his books as a teenager was a pivotal moment which set me on the path to doing what I do today. Thanks again to James, his team, and the staff at Foyles. A truly memorable evening.
By the way – the audio quality isn’t great, but I stumbled across a brief clip of James and I on YouTube this morning. It’s embedded at the bottom of this post. (Thanks to YouTube user astroduckula – I hope you don’t mind the link, and I hope you enjoyed last night!).
And on the subject of James Herbert… my friend Michael Wilson (the brains behind THIS IS HORROR), recently interviewed James for SCREAM magazine. The interview appears in the latest issue (pictured) which is available now.
And on the subject of This is Horror… the second in their series of chapbooks – THIN MEN WITH YELLOW FACES by Gary McMahon and Simon Bestwick – is released this Saturday, 22nd September. There will be an exclusive launch event in Manchester on Saturday featuring Ramsey Campbell and Conrad Williams alongside Gary and Simon. Click here for details. I believe there are a few copies of JOE & ME (my entry in the series) still available. That’s a story no AUTUMN fan should be without, but I’ll say no more about that for now…

THEM OR US – new UK paperback out today
Can it be almost a year since THEM OR US was released? Incredibly it is, and today Gollancz are releasing a mass market paperback edition of the book.
I always knew the final HATER novel would be a divisive book. After the maelstrom and fury of DOG BLOOD, the violence couldn’t just keep increasing exponentially, and so I took the decision to follow Danny McCoyne’s story in the radioactive, rubble-strewn aftermath of the war between the Haters and Unchanged. It’s a grim and uncompromising conclusion, I think, and to my mind it’s the only way Danny’s story could have ended.
I’m insanely proud of the trilogy as a whole, and will be putting together a brief retrospective in the coming months. If you haven’t yet read them, please do grab hold of HATER, DOG BLOOD and THEM OR US and enjoy (though I’m still not sure if enjoy is really the right word to use…). And don’t forget EVERYTHING AND NOTHING – the free short which takes place between the first two books – available here.
THEM OR US is available now from Gollancz in the UK and Thomas Dunne Books in the US. Find out more at www.thehatertrilogy.com.
And before you ask (because lots of people do every week), I don’t have any more news on the HATER movie just yet. But I will go digging for updates now…

The NEVER TRUST A MAN WITH HAIR TOUR – update!
As you may have heard, Wayne Simmons and I will be signing in various locations over the next few months, and our little jaunt has been christened the Never Trust a Man With Hair Tour. We’ve even got T-shirts (but I’ll spare you a picture of me wearing mine this morning – primarily because I’m alone in the house for once and I don’t have anyone to take a photo – you’ll have to make do with just the logo instead!).
We’ve made a few changes to our published schedule, so here’s a quick update:
CHELTENHAM – 31st October
We’ll be at Waterstones in Cheltenham on Halloween, along with a few friends. Adam Baker, Adam Nevill and Joseph D’Lacey will be joining us for a very special evening of readings and signing.
HORROR IN THE EAST – 2nd/3rd November
Back to Lowestoft (the setting, as you might remember, for THEM OR US) for a FREE weekend of horror alongside many other authors. Visit the website www.horrorintheeast.com for full details.
MAIDSTONE – 9th November
A new date! Wayne and I will be signing at Waterstones in Maidstone on the afternoon of 9th November, followed by a reading, Q&A etc. at the Hazlitt Arts Centre in the evening.
HULL – 24th November
I’m delighted to announce that Wayne and I will be joined by the brilliant Gary McMahon at Waterstones in Hull on 24th November.
SWINDON – 8th December
Wayne and I will be at Waterstones Swindon on 8th December.
Finally, I’m disappointed to announce that this coming weekend’s horror festival in Northampton has been cancelled. Not good. The words ‘piss up’ and ‘brewery’ spring to mind (a typically English expression, if you’re wondering what I’m on about).
Hope to see you while we’re out and about. Remember, if you want us to come visit your neck of the woods, please get in touch or ask your local bookstore to contact either/both of us. And I’m sorry, though we’d love to travel overseas and I am working to make that happen, we’re just doing the UK for now.

Sex, reality TV and big questions…
…in today’s instalment of TRUST - now available to read over at www.trustdavidmoody.com.
And while I’m on the subject, thanks to the team at www.andyerupts.com for this phenomenal review of the book which appeared over the weekend.
“It’s now been two weeks since I finished reading TRUST and I still can’t quite put my finger on what makes it, in my humble opinion, an instant classic… I can guarantee that you will never have read anything like TRUST before…“

Buy a Book Day
Did you know that September 7th is Buy a Book Day? I didn’t either. It’s an initiative that’s been around for a couple of years now, and I for one hope it continues to grow. Even if you haven’t heard about it, why not pick up a new book anyway?
I know I’m biased, but here are a couple you might like to try…
James Herbert’s first novel in six years – ASH – is now available (as you may have noticed from my slightly over-excited posts recently). The cherry on the cake for me this week is that James was very happy with the way things went on Monday evening, so much so that I’ve been asked to host his next signing at Foyles in London on 18th September. I can’t wait. If you’re one of the lucky 150 who have tickets to the sell-out event, you’re in for a treat.
And it’s Friday, so here’s my biweekly plug for TRUST, chapter 13 of which is now available to read online.
The book continues to get some great press. This week, Shadowlocked said: “For regular Moody readers, TRUST is the latest in a long line of thought provoking, intelligent novels, and a chance to see him stretch his wings outside of the AUTUMN and HATER universes. For new readers this is an ideal starting point to discover this major British talent who despite his innovations and successes of the last decade, you get the feeling is only just getting started.” Read the full review here.
If you can’t wait until the end of December to finish Tom Winter’s story, don’t forget the book is available now as a low price ebook, paperback, and limited edition hardcover (be quick – they’re disappearing fast…).

James Herbert
Well, what an experience that was. It’s the morning after the night before for this particular horror fan – and that’s how I felt last night: a horror fan more than a horror writer.
On leaving school many years ago, I wanted to direct films. It was never going to happen back then, as all I had was a head full of story ideas and not a lot else. But the stories refused to go away and, as a result of various things happening in my life, I started to write the tales I’d previously wanted to film. One of the pivotal moments for me was when I picked up a copy of DOMAIN by James Herbert. This post will become far too long and rambling if I talk about the book in any detail now, so I’ll save it for another day. Suffice to say, DOMAIN’s the only book I’ve ever finished reading then immediately turned back to page one and started again. It redefined what a horror novel could be for me, and it undoubtedly set me on the path towards writing the kind of books I write today.
Last night I had the honour of not only meeting James Herbert, but also of interviewing him in front of a huge crowd at Waterstones, Birmingham New Street – one of only two events he’s doing in support of his new novel, ASH.
When I left school, rather than head straight for Hollywood(!), I instead ended up working for Midland Bank, and they, coincidentally, were the owners of the imposing grade II listed building now occupied by Waterstones. It was a surreal experience to walk into the oak panelled senior manager’s office on the top floor to meet James. We spoke for a short while before the event – I gushed embarrassingly about the impact he’d had on my work, and he took it all in his stride whilst managing to put me right about certain aspects of writing and the business overall. It’s hard to appreciate the scale of this man’s achievements – in terms of figures alone, he’s written twenty-three novels which have been translated into more than thirty languages and have sold in excess of fifty-four million copies. That’s fifty-four million books. I talked to him about the queues already building up outside (which were astonishing) – he told me he once had a signing where a staggering seven hundred people turned up, and an additional eight hundred people had pre-ordered signed books!
Down to business, and whilst I was a little star-struck and fluffed my introduction, the rest of the evening went brilliantly. He’s such an easy man to talk to – and he pre-warned me, he doesn’t need much encouragement to talk! – so it was little more than a case of sitting back and enjoying listening to him along with the rest of the audience.
For any writers going out into the world to face their public, James Herbert provides a lesson on how to handle yourself. We finished talking just before eight and he immediately started signing. And signing. And signing. He finished just before eleven, engaging with absolutely everyone who’d come to see him, giving the last person in the vast queue just as much time and attention as he had the first.
Oh, and he even signed my original, yellowed with age, paperback copy of DOMAIN.
An incredible experience. Thanks to James, the staff at Waterstones, and a special thanks to fellow author Dave Jeffrey for sending the email that put me in touch with the store and made last night happen.
Inspiring and unforgettable.
