Lovely.
Lovely and deeply true.

TO FINISH OR NOT TO FINISH…?
Dear Ones —
My question of the day: Do you feel that you are obliged to finish reading a book, once you have started it?
I love to hear different people's reading styles. I have friends who are serious completists — they absolutely must finish, once they have begun, no matter what they think of the work.
I am just the opposite. I come from the "Life Is Too Short" school of reading: I will drop a book like it's hot if it doesn't hold my attention. If you don't have me by page 10 or 20, you ain't gonna get me. If it's a book that people are really loving, I might dig in a bit deeper, to see if I can align myself with popular opinion, but if I'm really not getting it, the book goes straight to the GIVE AWAY pile.
I am always amazed when I read some of the most vitriolic criticism of my books — not because I'm surprised people don't like everything I write (the arts are the very definition of a subjective world, after all) but because PEOPLE STAYED WITH IT, even though they were hating it! I always want to reach out to those people and say, "My god, if I hated anything as much as you hated my book, I would have stopped reading on page 3! Spare yourself next time! Release yourself from it, if it's driving you crazy! Go find a book to read that you love, you poor thing! Why spend your life in a rage?" Not that they want to hear from me, I'm sure…
(With professional reviews, it's different, of course: Those folks are PAID to read books that they hate. They have no choice but to bulldoze their way through it. But if you're a civilian reader? I give you full permission to stop reading at any time…)
What about all of you?
Completists or Quitters? Share your style…

Would you care to join me for dinner at "White Acre"?
Dear Ones —
Some of you may know that I based the Whittaker estate in THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS on an actual 18th century Philadelphia mansion called THE WOODLANDS.
The binding closet, Alma's carriage house, Hanneke's caged-in bedroom in the basement, the views of the river, the ballroom — all of these details from the novel were inspired by actual features of .
This beautiful historical site is in need of care and repair, and so I have volunteered to participate in a special fundraiser. On August 10th, you can join me for dinner at The Woodlands, as well as a tour of the grounds and (a rare treat) a tour of the house itself.
Tickets are limited (this will truly be an intimate affair) and can be purchased here, if you are interested:
The tickets are admittedly spendy, but it's for a great cause. Every dime of the money will go toward restoration of this precious and crumbling architectural treasure. (I want to support the restoration, too, so I bought a ticket for myself — even though I'm technically the guest of honor!)
I do hope you'll be able to join us for a beautiful once-in-a-lifetime evening at White Acre/Woodlands.
It's going to be just lovely!

NUMBER THREE!!! Dear Ones – I’m home from book tour, and I wanted to thank all…
NUMBER THREE!!!
Dear Ones –
I'm home from book tour, and I wanted to thank all of you who made such a big effort (drove long distances, hired babysitters, waited patiently in the signing line) to come and see me. I am so grateful for your care and your kindness, and I loved meeting you…THANK YOU!
And I also must thank you for contributing to this splendid piece of news: THE SIGNATURE OF ALL THINGS has moved up on the New York Times Bestseller's list this week from Number 5 to Number 3.
I've said it before, but I'll say it again: This is a 500-page novel about a 19th century spinster who spends her life studying moss. To say that this book is not exactly guaranteed bestseller material is an understatement!
But look what you have done, my briliant lovelies. Just look what you have done…
I wrote this novel as an endeavor of love and passion and creative experimentation. I wasn't at all certain that any of you would want to come along with me on this particular journey — and yet you have.
I am grateful and touched that you have embraced Alma Whittaker with such warmth and love.
On her behalf, I embrace you right back.
Heart,
LG
