NEWS: LIGHTSPEED’s Queers Destroy Science Fiction! is part of the current LGBTQ Humble Bundle!

The latest Humble Book Bundle is a LGBTQ Bundle, and it includes LIGHTSPEED’s Queers Destroy Science Fiction! special issue. As is always the case with Humble Bundles, each purchase helps support a charity; in this case, it’s the It Gets Better project.

You can pay-what-you-want to get the bundle, which includes a great assortment of titles. Here’s more about the Bundle and how Humble Bundle works, from the press release:

Reading rainbows. LGBTQ literature? Take a look. It’s in a book bundle! Support Pride Month by getting up to $342 of ebooks, digital comics, and audiobooks while supporting the It Gets Better Project.

Pay $1 or more for Lonely Planet’s Guide To Pride: 20 Cities And Their Celebrations, Falling In Love With Hominids, StoryCorps: OutLoud: Voices of the LGBTQ Community from Across America, Kevin Keller: Welcome to Riverdale, Becoming a Man: Half a Life Story, Starve Vol. 1, and The Mirror of Love.

Pay more than the average price to also receive If You Could Be Mine, Tipping the Velvet, The Infinite Loop, Artifice, Wandering Son Vol. 1, Queers Destroy Science Fiction, and Wuvable Oaf.

Pay $15 or more Massive: Gay Erotic Manga and the Men Who Make It, No Straight Lines: Four Decades of Queer Comics, Julio’s Day, Heart of Thomas, Smut Peddler 2014: A Superior Pornucopia For Classy Dames (And the Forward-Thinking Gentleman), and Wet Moon Vol. 1.

Name the price. Together, the books, comics, and audiobooks in this bundle usually cost as much as $342. Here at Humble Bundle, though, you choose the price!

Read them anywhere. The comics in this bundle are available in multiple formats including CBZ, PDF, and ePub, so they work on your computer, e-readers, iPads, cell phones, and a wide array of mobile devices! Instructions and a list of recommended reading programs can be found here. The books are available in PDF, ePUB, and MOBI formats, meaning you can read them anywhere at anytime. Instructions and a list of recommended reading programs can be found here. The audiobooks in this bundle are available as FLAC and MP3 files.  Instructions for audiobooks can be found here.

Support charity. Choose where the money goes — between the developers, the It Gets Better Project, and, if you’d like, a second charity of your choice via the PayPal Giving Fund. For details on how this works, click here. If you like this bundle or like what we do, you can leave us a Humble Tip too.

If you’ve already got QDSF,  you should still totally go check it out, if for no other reason than it includes Nalo Hopkinson’s excellent collection, Falling in Love with Hominids.

So what are you waiting for? Go check it out!

NEWS: 2016 Hugo Award Finalists

I’m pleased to announce that Brooke Bolander’s story for Lightspeed, “And You Shall Know Her by the Trail of Dead,” which was previously announced as a Nebula Award and Sturgeon Award finalist, is now also a Hugo Award finalist! Lightspeed is no longer eligible in the semiprozine category (which it won the last two years), but I’m pleased to report that I have been nominated in the Best Editor, Short Form category. And last but not least, Alyssa Wong—whose story for Nightmare, “Hungry Daughters of Starving Mothers,” is a finalist for both the Nebula and Stoker—is a finalist this year for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer. Major congrats to Brooke on the rare achievement of being nominated for both the Hugo and Nebula for the same work, and to Alyssa for netting a coveted Campbell nod in the same year she’s up for the Stoker and Nebula.

Thank you so much to all of you who nominated; you can see a full list of the other finalists at midamericon2.org.

NEWS: Hugo Award Nomination Deadline is March 31

Nominations for the Hugo Awards closes March 31.

If you like a thing, and you think it’s deserving of a Hugo Award, nominate it! If you’re not familiar with a thing, but you saw it on a suggested nominations list or something of the sort, either read/watch it, and then nominate it because you like it, or don’t nominate it because you didn’t like it. Point being, please don’t nominate stuff just because it’s on somebody’s list somewhere; only nominate things you personally think are deserving.

NEWS: New Series by Carrie Vaughn Acquired for John Joseph Adams Books (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)

In my new role as editor of John Joseph Adams Books* for Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I just acquired two books in a new series by Carrie Vaughn:

New York Times bestseller Carrie Vaughn’s BANNERLESS, a novel in which an investigator must discover the truth behind a mysterious death in a world where small communities struggle to maintain a ravaged civilization decades after environmental and economic collapse , to John Joseph Adams Books (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt), in a two-book deal, for publication in Spring 2017, by Seth Fishman at The Gernert Company. (North American)

Fans of Carrie’s (and/or my work in the short form) may recognize from that description that the book is set in the same milieu as Carrie’s Hugo-nominated story, “Amaryllis,” which I originally published way back in issue #1 of Lightspeed, and also her story “Bannerless,” which appeared in my anthology, The End Has Come.

____________

* If you missed the news, here’s the Locus and PW reports on the launch of John Joseph Adams Books. Our first book, Beacon 23 by Hugh Howey, is out now, and Hugh Howey’s Shift and Dust are forthcoming March 22. The Howey books were originally self-published, so these are “traditional publishing” reissues. The Carrie Vaughn series is my first original acquisition for the line.

NEWS: Hugo Awards Nomination Period Now Open + Free Stuff for Worldcon Members

This year’s Hugo Awards nomination period is now open. The 2016 Hugo Awards will be presented in Kansas City, MO during MidAmeriCon II, the 74th World Science Fiction Convention (Aug. 17-21). Nominations close on March 31, 2016.

Anyone who was a voting member of the 2015, 2016, or 2017 Worldcons by January 31, 2016 is eligible to nominate. You may nominate only once, regardless of how many of those three Worldcons you are a member.

Nominations may be submitted through the online ballot, available here.

To assist you in finding material to nominate, I’ve assembled this post to list everything that I worked on in 2015. I’ve included the Destroy special issues here, though on those I was only publisher (not editor).

Most of Lightspeed‘s original fiction from 2015 is available online (and also much of the 2015 original fiction is available as a podcast).
Most of Nightmare‘s original fiction from 2015 is available online (and also much of the 2015 original fiction is available as a podcast).
Selected stories from Fantasy’s Queers Destroy Fantasy! Special Issue are available online.
Selected stories from The End Has Come are available online.
Selected stories from Press Start to Play are available online.
Selected stories from Operation Arcana are available online.

If you are planning and eligible to vote for the Hugos this year, if you email me proof of your Worldcon membership (i.e., your name is listed on the Worldcon website as an attending member, or the email confirmation or receipt you received when you purchased your membership, etc.) I would be happy to make some additional 2015 material I edited available to you in digital format.

After the jump, you’ll find all of the 2015 eligible stories/authors that either appeared in Lightspeed or Nightmare, or in projects I’m otherwise affiliated with. Everything is sorted into their proper Hugo categories. In the interest of clarity (and to avoid the confusion that perhaps I’ve left something off the list by accident), I’ve listed some items that are ineligible and have them struckthrough to indicate their ineligibility.

REVIEW: “This may well become your environmentalist friend’s favorite book.” —ANALOG

“You’d think all the stories in this volume would be more or less the same; given the topic, you’re probably expecting dreary cautionary tales filled with angst and bitterness. And you’d be completely wrong. As with most theme anthologies, half the fun is seeing how each author went off in a totally different direction. […] This may well become your environmentalist friend’s favorite book.” —Analog Science Fiction & Fact [review]

REVIEW: “One of the rare collections that keeps the reader hungrier with every passing story.”

“These stories represent both the importance of games and the people that play and create them. They are all labyrinths, the stories and the games, and they act as mazes that we never intend to escape from. Collections are fickle beasts to tame, there is an overwhelming fear that one story will outweigh the rest and spoil the reader, and a greater fear of that one story that may leave a sour taste in your mouth. Press Play to Start is one of the rare collections that keeps the reader hungrier with every passing story. One might question why we even need a collection like this, or if Cline’s like revolution of videogame stories is simply a fad waiting to pass like the Dreamcast. And another would counter that, this collection should not and will not be sectioned off as a mere collection of nerdy stories; it is an utter and visceral look at our humanity, a reflection of us as both Bowser and Mario.” —Stymie [review]

REVIEW: “Deeply meaningful stories … you’ll find much enjoyment.” —ANALOG

“There’s plenty of variety in this volume, from outright comedy to deeply meaningful stories questioning the economics and ethics of games and the gaming industry. Whether you’re a hardcore gamer or an occasional dabbler, you’ll find much enjoyment and even some food for thought between these covers” —Analog Science Fiction & Fact [review]
