RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 31
Chapter 31: THE LORD OF MISRULE The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo, a sequel to Witch from the Sea
Jack didn’t want to see this, didn’t want to think about what Alphonse might be up to out here at dawn, making promises to another man’s slave. There might be several explanations, all of them dangerous, and most of them capital offenses. The Lord of Misrule, Jack had once called Alphonse, turning the complacent, orderly world upside down. What travesty was he plotting out here in secret?

RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 30
Chapter 30: HARLEQUIN FAREWELL The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo, a sequel to Witch from the Sea
When Jack went to such lengths to explain a thing, Tory knew it was something she was not going to like.
"No one will be expecting a pirate when they engage a player, and a player is all they'll see," he assured her. "We'll do recitations, comic speeches. A word to the Bruces, and I expect the Commissioner would have us in to a few dinner parties, to recite after the porter and cigars. And those guests might have us in to their dinner parties. There’s precious little else to do during the storm season, we might find ourselves in high demand."
"Higher than we bargained for if you end up swinging from a noose!" Tory exclaimed.

RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 29
CHAPTER 29: GONE A-MAYING The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo, a sequel to Witch from the Sea
"I don’t believe any man can truly understand how important it is for a woman to have something useful to do" Tory wrote in her logbook. "Calypso has her needle. Cybele has her cards, for which she is duly famed in Pointe-a-Pitre, where she is called la diseuse de bonne aventure, teller of fortune. To think that Alphonse tried to deny me the one contribution I have learned to make on dry land, my Columbine, because of the risk. There is risk in every moment of life, but we can't stop living because of it."

RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 28
Chapter 28: PLEDGES AND PROMISES The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo, a sequel to Witch from the Sea
"Matty asked you to stay?" Jack interrupted her. "Aboard the Providence? And you refused?"
"I believe I told him I’d rather share your grave for eternity than spend another hour in his bed." Tory smiled, relishing the memory.
"Hellfire, that foolish puppy must have cared for you after all," Jack exclaimed. "Handsome as a god and rich, besides! And you—" There was half a beat of silence. "What do you mean another hour?"

RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 27
Chapter 27: LOST AND FOUND The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo, a sequel to Witch from the Sea
Tory scanned through the paper again and glanced up at Jack. What must he have endured, slinking into Basseterre at the risk of his own safety, convincing that upstanding gentleman to commit a forgery? All for her. She wanted to cry, to rail at the gods, to throw herself into his arms, and never, ever let him go. At the same time, she felt a desperate emptiness.
"You are giving me my freedom?" she asked.
"That has never been mine to give," he told her gently. "But it’s yours to take." And he walked away before she could reply.

RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 26
Chapter 26: FORTUNE'S WHEEL The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo, a sequel to Witch from the Sea
"I can’t go back with you, hombre," Tory reasoned, as calmly as she could. "I’m a legal runaway ashore, an outlaw. There might be bills posted for my capture. I can be taken up and sold at auction."
"I know," Jack whispered, meeting her eyes again. "I could never ask you to take that risk. But I can’t stay with you."

RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 25
Chapter 25: CONTRABANDISTAS The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo, a sequel to Witch from the Sea
The sloop was clearly offloading something in private, but was it slaves? Even from this distance, the trim little sloop seemed to lack the stench and the gloom of a slaver. As near as Jack could make out, she rowed in and out with the same people aboard. He never saw Tory among them, and it was with some relief that he assured himself that she was not the cargo.

RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 24
Chapter 24: SOMETHING ON ACCOUNT The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo, a sequel to Witch from the Sea
"A smugglers' auction?" Jack echoed, dismayed. "How did Tory fall into their hands?"
"She was delivered there." Alphonse breathed a grim sigh. "By the chief constable."
Jack stared back at him. "Old mole, canst thou work i’ the earth so fast?" he muttered, almost to himself. Then he added, with chilling calm, "I’ll murder that bastard."
"Business before sport," Alphonse advised.

RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 23
Chapter 23: WHARF RATS AND SEAFARERS The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo, a sequel to Witch from the Sea
"Smugglers are always in the market for fresh slaves, since theirs are so likely to be killed or maimed in a chase with the revenue cutters, or some other hazard of the trade," the chief constable had explained merrily.
And here Tory now stood, on display in a dim, smoky room full of what Alphonse called the vermin of the sea. The sort of men she knew very well, indeed. One of them would be her passport out of this place. She would be off-island by morning. This was the last humiliation she would have to endure.

RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 22
Chapter 22: WHITEHALL The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo, a sequel to Witch from the Sea
"Suffering is highly overrated in my experience," Jack told Alphonse. "You’re far too sensible to want to be a martyr."
"Oh, yes, far too sensible to risk myself. But I have created a great many martyrs out of others."
