AHOY, THERE!

Greetings to all my fellow readers (and writers) on Goodreads!

If you have a taste for history, seafaring, romance, and/or pirates, please visit the new website for my novel, The Witch From the Sea, at http://witchfromsea.blogspot.com/

Feel free to check out the reviews, read a free sample, and find out more about my heroine, Tory Lightfoot, and her world.

And keep an eye out for occasional passages from Tory's secret logbook, where she tells stories from her life and adventures before the novel begins.

Thanks for reading!

4 Jacks and a Jamie

"You can't spit on board a ship and not hit eight fellows called 'Jack.'"

So says the pirate hero of my first swashbuckling novel Witch from the Sea My Jack chooses the name for anonymity in his dubious trade, as he explains to my heroine, runaway and accidental pirate-in-training Tory Lightfoot.

In swashbuckling fiction, on land as well as sea, characters named Jack seem to have all the fun. (Unless they're named James, like my other pirate hero, James Hook in Alias Hook.) I'm partial to my Jack, of course, but since it's summer reading season, here are some of my other favorite literary rakes and rogues named Jack, with one more Jamie thrown in. Enjoy!

Will Power

Pop those corks! William Shakespeare's 400th anniversary is almost upon us!

This week, April 23, is the 400th anniversary of his death (which was also his 52nd birthday, back in 1616), and why wait another 48 years to throw a party?

And there is much to celebrate in a low-born scribe (his father was a glove-maker), with an unremarkable education, whose plays are still being performed and enjoyed with gusto four centuries later—and still strike an emotional chord in audiences worldwide.

As my character, Jack Dance, actor-turned-pirate-turned actor, says, in my sequel to The Witch From the Sea:

"There’s no censure in Shakespeare, and every facet of life is represented— bawds and kings and villains and fools. Everything you could ever think or feel or want, Shakespeare has already written about it. And everything that happens in your own life affects how you to respond to him, so his words always seem new and fresh, however often you play them."

Not surprisingly, I totally agree! But Jack is only 28 when he says this, so from the vantage point of my own great age, I would add this: as we grow in years and experience, Shakespeare's words become ever more relevant, as we view them from our own ever-expanding perspective.

Shakespeare is timeless, in the same way that mythology, folklore, and fairy tales endure. And their timelessness inspires succeeding generations of bards and storytellers to reinvent the stories on their own terms.

So, check out my list of favorite Shakespeare reinventions—including (but not limited to) the likes of Christopher Moore, Neil Gaiman, Elizabeth Bear, and Walt Disney at

FREE BOOK!

Now that we're all sheltering in place with time to spare, it's the perfect opportunity to revisit Tory Lightfoot and Jack Dance, protagonists of my first published novel Witch from the Sea.
(Pirates! History! Romance! No Zombies!) I always envisioned their story as a trilogy, and although the next two novels were never published in book form, they do exist. So I'm bringing Tory and Jack and their further post-pirate adventures in the tropical West Indies back into the public eye. Borrowing a leaf from the Charles Dickens playbook, I posted the entire second novel in the trilogy, Runaways: A Tale of Jonkanoo, in serial chapters online.

In the coming weeks, I'll be posting links to each successive chapter for anyone who wants to follow along. Just doing my bit to provide a little escapism in these anxious times. Nothing to join, nothing to buy, no passwords required. Just follow the links and enjoy!

Click http://runaways-jonkanoo.blogspot.com/ for the Introduction to the story (including an explanation of "Jonkanoo"). Click http://runaways-jonkanoo.blogspot.com... to launch Chapter 1.

PS: The entire novel is already up, so feel free to binge away if you don't want to wait for my prompts!

RUNAWAYS: CHAPTER 2

Chapter 2: Playing Jonkanoo. The next installment of my novel online, Runaways: A Tale Of Jonkanoo>/i>, a sequel to Witch from the Sea.
What is Jonkanoo? An annual holiday parade performed by slaves in the West Indian sugar islands in the early 19th Century. For a few days, slaves were allowed to pretend they were free, going about masked and disguised, poking fun at their masters—until the rules of proper "civilized" behavior were clamped down again for another year. A fitting metaphor for my ex-pirate protagonists trying to pass as respectable citizens! (Image: Jonkanoo Parade, Jamaica, 1838)
