Show me your small wonders
Hello all! As we enter mid-November and Thanksgiving is fast approaching, I’m feeling reflective and somewhat sentimental (holidays have a way of doing that). In the spirit of giving, I am also thinking it’s time for a contest!
Whether you’ve read Small Wonders or just the description on the back of the book, you know the novel’s main character, Trip Morgan, has a certain proclivity for stealing seemingly inconsequential items from people’s bags and pockets. What items do you car...
Crafting Stronger Scenes
Scenes make up the entire structure of your novel, so it’s important to know how to do this well. Very often, a new scene is identified by the start of a new chapter, but it can also be a few paragraphs/pages long. Identifying a scene is the first step.
Here is the technical definition:Asceneis a unit of story that takes place at a specific location and time. If those change, you have a new scene. Your story will be illogical is it has no semblance of scene or scene changes...

Look what I just picked up from the library! 3 even came from 2.5hrs away to be here! Even though I’ve read 3 of the 4, thought it would be good to let the local library know people are interested in these books! (and Lodestones is on order!)
Ahhh, library presence is so important. Thank you so much for letting your library know people are interested.
Interesting story about Chef’s Table and my local library. Due to the kindness of co-workers, it arrived in my lib...
What advice you you give to writers who are just starting out?
We get this question a lot, and our answer is so disappointing and I’m sorry. But it’s the only answer I know. Learning to write is like learning to play the violin or, I dunno, fly a plane. You just have to do it, regularly, for years. And be bad at it for years. And then get a little better. And then a little better. You just have to practice it for a long, long time, and there’s no way around that unfortunately. Also you need to read a lot. And try to be diverse in your reading, both in th...

Banned Books Week!
I put together a display for Banned Books Week, which starts today; unfortunately I was told by my administrators that I can’t do a lesson on it, because the English department is teaching a new curriculum this year and they’re worried about fidelity and a BBW lesson “distracting” from the regular unit… So this is the closest I can get. But hopefully it’ll at least inspire some discussion.

Plot A Month W4D5: Plot Versus Pantsing
I might end up emphasizing this too much, but your outline is not a rigid structure that must be obeyed regardless of the cost. As a writer, your creative flow is going to go up and down, or occasionally faucet at full blast - holy shit where did all those ideas come from and why do they occur when you are exhausted and trying to sleep?
There’s a semi-artificial debate over two methods of writing, plotting versus pantsing. Pantsing, you can probably guess, is tackling t...
