Watch: Restorative Reset at Yoga Vibes

My newest video available at Yoga Vibes is a sweet restorative practice to enjoy using a chair or coffee table. Here, you can see the full 58-minute video in 30 seconds!

Description

Let’s be real—we all need more rest. This hourlong restorative yoga practice with Sage Rountree delivers just that with three deeply relaxing poses. You’ll begin in a supine position, utilizing a chair to elevate your legs and release tension in the psoas and lower back. From there you’ll move into a gentle twist, finishing with a cozy, supported savasana. This practice is the antidote for frazzled nerves, a tweaked back, or insomnia.

Props

3 to 4 blankets, chair, bolster (or large pillow/cushion), 2 yoga blocks (or several thick books), sandbag (or bag of rice), eye pillow

If you’d like a discount on a year’s subscription to Yoga Vibes, which also comes with a really nice Jade yoga mat, use the code sagevibes and you’ll save $50!

Not Too Late: Kripalu Workshops for Athletes, Teachers, and Everyone

[image error]Come learn what this is all about!

If your 2020 needs more yoga in it already, it’s not too late to join me for one or both of these workshops I’m leading at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in western Massachusetts later this month:

Yoga for Athletes: Strength, Flexibility, and Focus—the eleventh year I’ve offered this program in January. People repeat the program regularly, so if you’ve done it before, please join us again Friday–Sunday, January 24–26. We have some sweet alumni returning this year!Teaching Yoga to Athletes, Sunday–Friday, January 26–31. You’ll get a discount if you sign up for both! If you are a teacher who can make only the weekend, I’m happy to chat with you about ways to reverse engineer what you learn in the weekend so you can help your athletic students better.

The assistant for both is Amanda Frayeh, whose expertise in both kinesiology and sport psychology, along with her warm sense of humor, will elevate the programs substantially! Read more about Amanda here.

Find details on both workshops and excerpts from my work at my Kripalu presenter page. I look forward to seeing you there!

Nothing new under the sun. Today’s unexpected joy: finding this ad for @kripalucenter in the June/July 1980 issue of @yogajournal in the stacks at the @uncsa library. Note the Yoga and Running workshop at the top right. I’ll be leading two workshops at Kripalu in January: Yoga for Athletes (and everyone) 1/4–6, and Teaching Yoga to Athletes 1/6–11. Join me: I promise you’ll feel as radiantly happy as this woman! You can get to registration via the link in bio or at sagerountree.com. Thanks @vivianrountree for the find. #ujoy #kripalu #yogaforathletes #yogaforrunners #ytt

Finally, here’s an unrelated, unpaid endorsement. After reading the illuminating book Real Food, Fake Food by Larry Olmstead (a nice gift in itself, published by Chapel Hill–based Algonquin books and only $1.99 on the Kindle!), I joined the Fresh Pressed Olive Oil Club, based in Asheville, NC. They send three excellent fresh oils each quarter, and these oils really elevate whatever you put them on. They would be a great gift for a friend or for yourself!

Product + Service Combined

Yoga mats are a great accompaniment to a Yoga Vibes membership or a studio gift card. I think of mats like cars. Some are cushy and posh, with low road feel, like a Cadillac. The prAna ECO Mat is such a mat. I love it for both Pilates and yoga, especially when the practice is low to the ground. Others are sporty and really let you feel the ground under you, like a Porsche. The Manduka PRO is such a mat; they kindly sent me one a few years ago and my husband immediately co-opted it as his own!

Kripalu Preview: Meet Amanda Frayeh

I’m delighted to introduce Amanda Frayeh, who’ll be my assistant for Yoga for Athletes and Teaching Yoga to Athletes at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in January! (Read all about the workshops and register here.) Amanda took the five-day teachers’ intensive with me at Kripalu in January 2019, and I’m really excited she’ll be coming from Minneapolis to add her expertise to both programs in 2020. She’ll accompany me for Yoga for Athletes: Strength, Flexibility, and Focus Friday–Sunday, January 24–26, and for Teaching Yoga to Athletes Sunday–Friday, January 26–31.

Like me, Amanda is a recovering academic with ties to North Carolina. She went to college at Warren Wilson in western NC, where she played soccer, before earning a master’s degree in sport psychology from UNC–Greensboro and a PhD in Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota. What a skillset she will bring to our workshops! I had the pleasure of seeing Amanda teach a soccer-specific sequence to our teachers’ group, and she’s a natural. Her warm, fun presence makes athletes of any level feel immediately comfortable. I know she’ll add a ton of value to the workshops, and I hope you will join us both in January. Visit Amanda’s website to learn more about her.

Amanda is also the author of this excellent Kripalu Bingo card! You’ll have to come to one or both workshops to understand it and complete your own. Read all about the workshops and register here.

Newly Certified: Beth Marek

Meet Beth Marek! Beth is the most recently certified teacher to graduate from my Teaching Yoga to Athletes course. She lives in El Paso, Texas, where she works as a climbing guide and yoga teacher. Beth came to yoga as a runner—she ran at Davidson College, down the road from me in North Carolina. Like many runners, she found the practice while sidelined with an injury.

[image error]I don’t quite understand how this is possible!

Beth has not one, but two 200-hour yoga teacher trainings under her belt, as well as a 300-hour training, and her dedication to learning shines. As is appropriate for a teacher trainer with Beth’s level of experience, she is a fabulous teacher: her cueing is clear, her demeanor is calm and welcoming, and her sequencing recognizes the needs of athletes for a class focused on balance, not on providing a workout. If you are in El Paso, you can find her at Blu Luna Yoga Studio, or out on the boulders around Hueco Tanks State Park. Read more about Beth and find her schedule at bethmarek.com.

If you’d like to join Beth as an expert in teaching yoga to athletes, plan your trip to Kripalu in January 2020, where you can do the content side of my Teaching Yoga to Athletes course in person, or start your work on the course at Sage Yoga Teacher Training.

Preorder Now: The Durable Runner by Alison Heilig

If you’re a runner, you have likely faced at least one injury—the closer you push to your limits, the more inevitable injuries become. But they don’t have to derail your running. With a little foresight, you can make yourself more injury-resistant and improve your resilience when injuries do occur.

Here comes a wonderful book to help you: The Durable Runner, by Alison Heilig. Alison is a running coach, yoga teacher, and strength trainer—and, as you can deduce from the cover, a protégée of mine who has assisted me at Kripalu. I was honored to write the foreword for this excellent book, which is clear, inspiring, and easy to follow. If you’ve been plagued by injury or have been wondering how to make yourself stronger so you can meet your running goals, this is the book for you!

Its publication date is November 1, but you can preorder now on Amazon or wherever you like to buy books. Meanwhile, follow Alison on Instagram—she’s so inspiring in her unique combination of strength and honesty. Your feed will be the richer for the follow, and your running will be better when you read and incorporate what you find in The Durable Runner.

Moving Soon: Carrboro Yoga Company to a New Two-Room Space

Since the spring, Carrboro Yoga has been condensed to one room as we prepare to move out of Carr Mill Mall, where we spent our first 15 years. Happily, that move is coming Monday, September 9!

If you’re reading this after that day, you will find us at South Green, 101 Two Hills Drive (aka 501 South Greensboro Street), unit 150. We have two beautiful rooms and a pristine lobby and set of bathrooms for you. Access is simple—provided you can cope with traffic circles. (Alexandra, who lives a few blocks south of the traffic circle, texted me a few days ago: “There are two types of people in this world: those who understand how to use a roundabout and those who do not.”) And there is tons of pervious (i.e., relatively green) parking.

Alexandra will lead the first class there—Pilates at 4:30 p.m.—and I’ll teach the first yoga class, Yoga for Athletic Balance, there at 6:00 p.m. Please join us, if not on day 1, at some day in the near future. We have a great schedule of classes, series, workshops, and teacher trainings for you.

While all classes and yoga teacher training will run in the new space, we’ll be gradually getting up to speed and putting the finishing touches in place for the next few weeks. Please join us for our grand opening party:

WHEN: Saturday, September 28, 4:30–6:30 p.m.
WHERE: Carrboro Yoga, 101 Two Hills Drive, Unit 150, Carrboro, NC
WHY: We’ll have door prizes, special deals on class passes, and pizza from our neighbor Coronato Pizza. Let’s celebrate!

No need to respond, simply show up.

Our signage went up today:

Watch: Yin for the Upper Body at Yoga Vibes

My newest video available at Yoga Vibes is a yin yoga practice for the upper body.

http://sagerountree.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Yin-for-shoulders.mp4
Description

Join Sage Rountree for a 30-minute yin class designed to open your shoulders and relax your mind. Increase mobility in the shoulders from multiple angles as you move through four yin-style poses. As a bonus, they’re all done lying on the ground, so you get maximum relaxation! This is a standalone chill practice, and also great as a cool down after any Yang-style workout.

Props

Please have one block and a rolled-up mat, towel, or blanket available.

If you’d like a discount on a year’s subscription to Yoga Vibes, which also comes with a really nice Jade yoga mat, use the code sagevibes and you’ll save $50!
