DIY Consent Cards
Now that social distancing has eased in yoga studios, there’s a potential for teachers to offer manual assists again. At Carolina Yoga Company, our policy is that this happens only with expressed consent from the student. They can express consent with a verbal yes, or with a visual cue like consent cards.
You’ll find many options for these cards. Some shops sell tokens with a yes on one side and a no on the other. Some sell playing cards with similar messages. You could, of course, just use a regular deck of playing cards, and explain to your students that the face up means yes and the face down means no.
Or you can make your own cards! It’s easy and, in my experience, fun even for someone with limited art skills.

I made these with some blank square cards and Posca paint pens.
We distribute them to students in a class where the teacher will be offering manual assists, and invite students to change the card as they need to. This allows students to extend or retract consent as needed. Maybe they like assists only in savasana, or never in savasana. Maybe they are protecting an injury and will revoke consent when poses put an injured area in a more vulnerable position. The choice is the students’!
I used these for the first time in a small-group class this week, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how many students flipped cards from the NO, where I set it, to the YES. (Naturally, I also respect those who chose to pass on touch at that moment.) I think we are hungry for touch after the pandemic, and the yoga classroom is one place where we can enjoy it. Thanks to consent cards, we can enjoy it with clearer boundaries.

Guide: Essential Questions to Ask About Yoga Teacher Training
It’s a joy to have a live, in-person yoga teacher training on the schedule at Carolina Yoga Company! As part of my planning for this fall’s weekend-format YTT, I created a guide, “Essential Questions to Ask About Yoga Teacher Training.”

This guide starts with questions I outline in The Professional Yoga Teacher’s Handbook and moves on to share answers specific to Carolina Yoga Company’s program. If you’d like to read it, pop your info in this form and I’ll send it right over!

Speaking of which, next week I will be opening registration for some wonderful advanced studies/continuing education workshops at CYC. Stay tuned!

Watch: Yoga Snack: Finishing Sequence
My latest video for Yoga Vibes offers a standalone segment or a finishing sequence to put at the end of a workout or a longer yoga practice.
This sequence of mellow poses is a reset for your hips, spine, and nervous system. It’s a perfect add on at the end of a rigorous practice — or simply at the end of a long day. A block or throw pillow will serve as a support for bridge pose, so have one handy. You are encouraged to extend your savasana to taste!
Stream the full video here. And if you want to subscribe to a year of Yoga Vibes, you’ll save 25 percent with the code sagevibes.

Watch: Yoga Snack: Hip Release
My latest video for Yoga Vibes is another short practice that works as a standalone or in combination with other snacks!
This hip-stretching sequence is perfect for after a workout or some other movement (like Alexandra DeSiato’s Pilates classes!). Pair it with Sage’s yoga snack warmup for a full mat sequence. We visit cow-face pose, lizard pose, and two twists. A strap or hand towel might make the experience sweeter for tight shoulders.
Watch the preview above and the full video here. If you’d like to commit to a year of yoga, the code sagevibes will save you 25 percent on an annual subscription.

Last Call: Teaching Yoga Beyond the Poses Live Online Saturday
It’s not too late to join me and Alexandra DeSiato for a live online workshop this Saturday, March 27! We’ll discuss how to find your authentic voice as a yoga or movement teacher so you can elevate your classes by incorporating themes to help your students feel better connected. If you liked our book Teaching Yoga Beyond the Poses, you’ll love this interactive workshop! And it’ll earn you four Yoga Alliance CEUs, to boot.
We had a lovely and lively conversation yesterday with Deanna of Shambhala Yoga and Dance in Brooklyn about the book, our approach to theming, and the upcoming workshop. Watch it here:

Watch: Petaluma Riverside Chat on Yoga for Rowers and All Athletes
Last week, I spoke virtually to rowers in Petaluma, California, and across the country on why and how to incorporate yoga into their training. We started with some slides and a brief lecture on yoga for athletes, then I presented a standing sequence—no props or mat required—that can be practiced both as a dynamic warmup before getting in the boat and as a post-workout stretch off the water. My host was my Teaching Yoga to Athletes student Jessica McCready, who works with rowers and runners in the north Bay Area. You’ll find other useful chats for rowers here.
You can see the whole presentation here.
If you’re interested in the led movement portion, scrub ahead to 29:00 to see the sequence in list form, then demonstrated in a follow-along style.
This sequence is a modified version of one that appears in Everyday Yoga. (Here’s an example of how I tweaked it for winter sports in a piece for Yoga Journal.) It’s adaptable for various sports and works especially well when you don’t have much room or time. Try it and let me know what you think!
