Alvin Adjei is an American author and practicing lawyer. He is also the former President of the Houston Young Lawyers Association (HYLA.) Traditional, Self, and Hybrid Publishing. Which One to Choose? Part 1
Book publishing can be an overwhelming process. There are so many different things to consider when deciding to publish and various options available when it comes to publishing your book. So how can you know which one is the right fit for you? Let’s look at the different ways available to publish your book.
Traditional Publishing
Traditional publishing is the standard method of publishing your book. This is the way most established authors will publish their books. When an author has a book they want to publish they submit it to a traditional publishing company. The publisher then will review it and decide if they want to publish the book. Once they sign on, the authors will receive a payment for the publishing rights to the book and will receive a part of the proceeds of sales. The publisher is in control of aspects such as editing, marketing, promotion, and distribution of the book to booksellers. These publishers have the advantage of being an established bookseller and range from large corporations to small indie companies. They have knowledge and resources available to them them other publishers may not have.
Self Publishing
Thanks to the wide variety of sources online, self-publishing is more accessible than ever before. It allows authors to dictate exactly how their book is published. Self publishing allows for greater control over the final version of the book and the benefit of the proceeds from sales. However, the author takes on the responsibility of putting the book on the market themselves. This means that all the editing, marketing, promotion, and even distribution falls solely on the author.
Hybrid Publishing
Hybrid publishing is a mix between traditional and self publishing. Both authors and publishers work together to publish a book on the market. This is a way authors can have more creative freedom while still getting the experience of having a team to help publish their book. Hybrid publishers will offer packages with varying involvement for things like marketing and promotion to distribution of the book to sellers. Authors will be more involved in the decision making process and most often get a higher percentage of proceeds from sales. Authors might have to meet certain standards, but will be met with less restrictions than with traditional publishers.
How To Choose
The main difference between these methods are the risks and rewards taken by the author. With traditional publishing authors have more assurances but less control over the publishing process. Self publishing requires the author to take on the risks of publishing themselves, but the benefits may be worth it. Hybrid publishing lets the author take less risks than self publishing with some of the same benefits of experience that traditional publishing offers.

Don’t Let Procrastination Kill Your Book this Halloween
Halloween dress up season is here, and many writers revel in the season—it’s fantastic inspiration for books and stories. But for some writers, the season isn’t enough to inspire them to go back to their books.
After months of writing, the true killer of stories and potential best sellers emerges: procrastination.
If you’re one of the many writers who thinks about writing a book but keeps putting it off, you know that procrastination is killing your book ideas. But you shouldn’t let this happen.
You can make a killing as a book author even if you keep putting it off. In fact, some of the most successful book authors are also the biggest procrastinators. The key is to use your procrastination to your advantage.
Here are a few things you can do to overcome your procrastination and start writing your book:Set a Manageable GoalWhether you measure it in hours, pages, or words, setting a manageable daily goal for your book can help it progress. Decide how much you want to write each day or each week. Set a deadline and commit to it.
You can even gamify this process for added inspiration—give yourself rewards for meeting these goals!
Choose a Set ScheduleMany authors have specific preferences when it comes to writing times. Some prefer to do it in the early morning, while others are more productive after lunch or even late at night.
Determine the best hours for your productivity and set a firm schedule to focus on your book.
Make a PlanYou could also outline your book before you start writing. This will give you a roadmap to follow and what you need to write and address in your book.
This outline can also help you begin another chapter or part of your book if you feel stumped in one area.
Set a Deadline for Your BookAnother way to stop procrastination is to set a firm deadline for your manuscript. Align this date with your schedule, projected word count, and book outline so you can track your progress. This will help you stay motivated and keep you from getting sidetracked.
Use What You HaveIf you love writing, you likely have a blog, a journal, or other works-in-progress that have been abandoned. Explore some of the many other things you’ve written and see how you can use them to your advantage.
A certain blog post may inspire you to write more, and some ideas jotted down in a stray notebook can help you develop ideas for the next sections of your manuscript.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Brad Schlerf is an American Army veteran, retired police detective, and author. The son of a volunteer EMT and firefighter, Brad began his public service at an early age by becoming a volunteer firefighter himself at age 14 and an EMT at 15. He served in the US Army for eight years. After returning from his tours, Brad took a position with the local police department in Junction City, Kansas, and from there became a detective with the Manhattan Police Department in Riley County, Kansas. Here, working with a team of nerds, lawyers, judges, white hat hackers, and officers, Brad was involved in the initial stages of what is now Computer Forensics.
After retirement, Brad developed his own company, Forensic Solutions Inc. His investigations with FSI have been featured on 48 Hours, True Crime TV, A&E’s Dead Again, NBC, Discovery Channel’s Killing Fields, and several journals. Brad is the author of the Gotcha book series, a True Crime trilogy based on real homicides and Cold Cases that he helped solve during his career as a detective.
Brad is married and the father of three beautiful children. Brad continues to hope this world will see past the issues of color and hate and realize we are all in this together as ONE race: Human.
