Bailey Herrington was born in Pittsburgh and grew up in Erie, Pennsylvania. After completing studies at The Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, he served congregations in Pennsylvania and West Virginia for 24 years. In addition to writing weekly sermons, Bailey created his “altar” ego, “Pious Pete the Protestant Pope,” for congregational newsletters. The Pious Pete articles used humor and satire to poke fun at the foibles of the organized church and, most frequently, Herrington himself. A Writers' Digest course on short story writing taught him the value of revising and honing plots, characters, and scenes.
