“We have not yet learned to see within female ugliness the possibility of transcendent art…”

The Left isn’t wrong about everything.

The “male gaze” is a real thing. (Thank you — to a man, John Berger — for eloquently popularizing the notion, years before Whatshername came along, I’m fairly certain).

This writer posits the “male glance.” Very interesting (if you’re me.)

(God, I hope this doesn’t mean I have to go back and watch Girls though…)

A famous Susan Sontag meditation on this aesthetic paradigm bears repeating: “The great advantage men have is that our culture allows two standards of male beauty: the boy and the man. The beauty of a boy resembles the beauty of a girl. In both sexes, it is a fragile kind of beauty and flourishes naturally only in the early part of the life cycle. Happily, men are able to accept themselves under another standard of good looks – heavier, rougher, more thickly built … There is no equivalent of this second standard for women. The single standard of beauty for women dictates that they must go on having clear skin. Every wrinkle, every line, every grey hair, is a defeat.”

I have to insert a bit that longtime 5FF readers may know by heart:

That when The Beauty Myth came out, my (very attractive) radical feminist roommate at the time scoffed, “Yeah, sure: write a book like that when you look like HER!!” Anyway:

This is still how we treat most female authors. “I have observed that male writers tend to get asked what they think, and women what they feel,” said Eleanor Catton after winning the Man Booker Prize for her novel The Luminaries. “In my experience, and that of a lot of other women writers, all of the questions coming at them from interviewers tend to be about how lucky they are to be where they are – about luck and identity and how the idea struck them.”

There it is again: chance, accident, and the passive construction of female artistry – not “How did you create?” but “How were you struck?” Catton puts it well:

“The interviews much more seldom engage with the woman as a serious thinker, a philosopher, as a person with preoccupations that are going to sustain them for their lifetime.”

After her speech about “diversity,” Frances McDormand’s Oscar was stolen by a “black megalomaniac”

After her speech about “diversity,” Frances McDormand’s Oscar was stolen by a “black megalomaniac”

Steve Sailer’s usual MUST-READ:

Moreover, another question for Ms. McDormand might be: “Have you actually watched many of your husband’s movies? If you have, didn’t you notice how intensely white they are?”

In other comic events at the Oscars, the newly diversified Academy voters celebrated their #MeToo moment by handing a Best Animated Short Oscar to retired basketball star Kobe Bryant. Kobe spent much of 2004 on trial on charges of raping a 19-year-old white woman. But she eventually dropped her criminal accusation and settled out of court with him for an undisclosed sum. So I guess that makes it all right. Plus, she was white. (…)

At the Oscars, del Toro announced that he was an immigrant and that the purpose of art was to “erase the lines in the sand.” Yet del Toro seems to value being able to secure his daughters north of the line in the sand between the Lovecraftian madness of Mexico and the sane safety of suburban America.

It’s almost as if del Toro finding refuge north of the border while his father’s kidnappers are, at least for now, bottled up south of the border is what Trump meant by implying that our immigration system should be reformed so that Mexico is sending their best.

David Cole: “I am so sick of David Hogg, the pompadorable Parkland school shooting ‘survivor’ and media-darling gun control activist”

David Cole writes:

Seriously, I haven’t seen such a wall of protection around a teenager since that bubble boy from the ’70s.

My beef with David Hogg, aside from the fact that he’s become the American Muhammad in terms of “ridicule is verboten,” is that he exemplifies everything I despise about the “postmillennial” generation. Having grown up in a culture that worships victimhood, Hogg is playing the survivor role with such gusto that, were Elie Wiesel still alive, he’d be green with envy. (…)

Strong is a Christian who, in the aftermath of a school shooting, used the publicity he received to spread a message of faith. And the media destroyed him. [Twenty years later,] Hogg, Kasky, and their pals are, in the aftermath of the Parkland shooting, using the publicity they’ve received to spread a message of gun control. And the press has decided that they must never be criticized, even if they falsely claim to have been “on the receiving end of an AK-15” when, in reality, they were taking cover in their classrooms behind locked doors.

Jim Goad: The Corporate War on Free Speech

Jim Goad writes:

How can anyone interpret this as anything more than either a staunch unwillingness, or even an outright inability, on the part of the corporate globalist left to debate ideas that they deem unacceptable? Six years ago I wrote about the left’s cowardice when it comes to debating, especially since I approach the art “like a bloodsport.” And the most exciting recent online development I’ve seen were the livestreamed “Internet Bloodsports” debates hosted by the likes of Andy Warski and Baked Alaska. The debates almost exclusively involved squabbles between luminaries from competing segments of the right because, as I’ve said, leftists are too cowardly to debate anything these days.

YouTube recently banned both Andy Warski and Baked Alaska from livestreaming, presumably because they allow “trusted flaggers” such as the Southern Poverty Law Center to take down anything which chafes their sensitive skin.

But it doesn’t stop at racial realists such as the Daily Stormer and Andrew Anglin.

“Philip Rieff’s 1973 prophecy has been vindicated: ‘Immediately behind the hippies are the thugs'”

They occupy the remissive space opened up by the hippies, deepening it from an aesthetic into a politics. The self-absorbed therapy of the hippies clears the way for the mass-murder therapy of the thugs.

RELATED:

Perhaps no one articulated this transition better than Alasdair MacIntyre in After Virtue, where he noted that “protest becomes a distinctive moral feature of the modern age and … indignation is a predominant modern emotion.” Emotivism, the theory that moral judgments are neither true nor false but merely feelings of approval or disapproval, replaces accounts of moral judgment as something that responsible, intelligent adults could calmly argue about in hopes of attaining not only agreement but truth.

If moral judgments are nothing more than articulations of preference, then moral claims are dictates of power, and only the naïve continue to patiently offer reasons. The shrewd exercise power through repressive tolerance and busily continue their march through the institutions of our common life.

David Baddiel reviews “Jewish Comedy: A Serious History”

David Baddiel reviews “Jewish Comedy: A Serious History”

David Baddiel in the Times Literary Supplement:

Some of its jokes are laugh-out-loud-funny, and some of them are poignantly beautiful, like the one Dauber tells about a Relocation Officer speaking to a Holocaust survivor who has lost his entire family. The officer asks the survivor where he intends to go now:

“Australia.”

“Australia! But that’s so far!”

“From where?” says the survivor.

Jewish Comedy is similar in that respect to another recent book about the subject by the British academic, Devorah Baum, The Jewish Joke, which also contains a welter of both hilarious and beautiful jokes. The nearest to the above tells of a Holocaust survivor who dies and goes to heaven. On arrival he tells God a Holocaust joke. And God says: “that isn’t funny”. The survivor replies: “Oh well, you had to be there”.

Theo Caldwell: Guessing Justin Trudeau’s mental age

Theo Caldwell: Guessing Justin Trudeau’s mental age

Theo Caldwell writes:

Having inherited a family fortune and, effectively, the leadership of the Liberal Party, Justin enjoys a more privileged life than you or I ever will. As we sometimes see with children of celebrities, or those who achieve fame too young, arrested development sets in.

To wit, such people do not mature because they do not have to.

As a rough estimate, I would assess Justin a mental age of about 15.

I do not mean a precocious 15, either. In fact, I mean a particular sort of teenager, with which you might be familiar.

I mean the kid in the class who adores the sound of his own voice, who stands in awe of his own intellect, and whose overall obtuseness is obvious to everyone but himself.

He is the sort of self-promoting, mean-spirited virtue-signaler who is always leading some politically correct campaign, just so he can make a speech in assembly or get himself interviewed by the local news.

Sailer reviews Steven Pinker’s new book, “Enlightenment Now”

Sailer reviews Steven Pinker’s new book, “Enlightenment Now”

writes:

The mid-20th-century “Great Migration” from the American South numbered only 6 or 7 million, but it still destroyed Detroit. The much greater migration heading from Africa to Europe will likely do far worse. The cities of Europe that survived the Second World War are probably the greatest works of arts of humanity, but, under present trends, they are going to be inundated by immigrant Africans, turning Florence into Ferguson, Barcelona into Baltimore, and Edinburgh into East St. Louis.

There’s little need for this impending destruction. Africa is a vast continent with, as Pinker suggests, plenty of room to grow far more food than it does now. But Africans are a threat to overwhelm Europe (and, eventually, the rest of the Western world) because our culture is increasingly sacralizing blacks, with the worst sin being to speak realistically of their strengths and weaknesses.

This doesn’t have to happen.
