WATCH: Mark Steyn talks with Lindsay Shepherd, who showed her students a Jordan Peterson video and… BOOM!
(Background here.)
Steyn notes that younger people are less inclined to be supportive (even in the breach) of free speech as a value in and of itself, whereas he “thought young people were supposed to be idealistic…”
But these young people ARE “idealistic” — about “social justice” and censorship.
What worries me more is their conformity.
We also expect young people to be non-conformist. Yet as I’ve observed before, today’s youth seem averse to, for example, the lure of sub-culture.
Perhaps I’m out of touch, but we no longer see them sorting themselves into Mods or Punks or Skins in the numbers that once made such sub-cultures seem ubiquitous, and an expected teen “phase.”
Now, we can laugh at the idea that someone becomes a Mod because, as Quadrophenia‘s Jimmy says, he wants to be “different than everybody else.” But paradoxically, these sub-cultures were a relatively safe way (barring the occasional Brighton Beach riot) of easing into a new, adult Self.
There was just enough risk (of being beaten up or at the very least shunned) for wearing the wrong colour boot laces, to create the friction necessary for movement, that it: personal development.
I guess these days, the Mods’ parents would drive them to Brighton in the SUV — not quite the same thing, no?

The most amusing aspect of the impressive, if not particularly comic, new comedy The Death of Stalin is that Jeffrey Tambor (Arrested Development), who earns most of the film’s laughs as Malenkov, the Soviet dictator’s sad-sack nominal successor, saw his face Photoshopped out of the movie’s poster for #MeToo reasons.
Ironically, one of Malenkov’s first acts upon achieving nominal supremacy after Stalin’s demise in March 1953 was to have Pravda publish a clumsily airbrushed photo of himself with Stalin and Mao from which he’d excised all his colleagues, such as Khrushchev, Beria, and Molotov. But Malenkov had overlooked that Stalin didn’t memory hole his rivals until after he’d killed them (nobody loved murdering Communists more than the arch-Communist Stalin), while Malenkov’s peers were alive.
And peeved.

“What we’re seeing now, with blacks in South Africa and here in the U.S., is tragically inevitable”
David Cole writes:
That said, let’s face an uncomfortable truth. Colonizing African nations and using the locals for slave labor was a bad idea, a stupid idea, an idea born of white hubris. And what doomed it was the belief that the “inferior” races would eternally submit to white domination. Over time, any people subjected to oppression and humiliation will get pissed. Even a supposedly lesser people will get pissed. So call blacks inferior if you’d like, but at the end of the day, who made the truly stupid choices? European whites in the age of colonialism thought they could continue the subjugation of indigenous blacks forever. And American whites in the aftermath of the Civil War thought that newly freed blacks could be kept uneducated and servile for perpetuity. There’s a moment near the end of Thomas Dixon’s 1902 novel The Leopard’s Spots (one of the two books used as the basis for D. W. Griffith’s Birth of a Nation) in which two characters bicker over what to do with the emancipated blacks. The “extremist” urges immediate “repatriation,” whereas the lead character explains that the hard labor of blacks is necessary for the economy of the South, and he reassures the extremist that if blacks are simply kept uneducated and intimidated, they’ll happily plow the fields for generations to come. Although Dixon’s book is fiction, this was an actual debate that took place after the war. And we all know which point of view won.

From the US Speccie:
We were so close to getting rid of Jann Wenner. (…)
But reporting from Vanity Fair has confirmed that the Penske Media Corporation, the magazine’s new owners, are keeping Wenner on. Not with some kind of emeritus sinecure, either, but with the title of editorial director.
We should have known it would be this way with a Baby Boomer. A generation obsessed with preserving youth at all costs naturally has no idea how to make a graceful exit. (…)
If the Rolling Stone ethos had ever really been about youth, Wenner would no doubt feel an obligation to step aside and let a younger generation take control of the magazine’s direction. But of course it wasn’t. It was only ever about the vices of youth—egotism, self-indulgence, unearned idealism—and the Baby Boomers’ reluctance ever to grow out of them.
The trouble with the “affluence” theory of Baby Boomer awfulness is that is it doesn’t travel well

“Equality has become one of the most insidious ideas in the language”
Christopher DeGroot writes:
There is a simple reason for such phenomena: Human beings are powerfully attracted to anyone or anything that seems greater than themselves. There is in human psychology a deep animal instinct of veneration and idolatry; into this has gone all our history, all our terrible struggle to survive and endure. Thus many people naturally take to flattery and are not at all troubled by it, their pride being no hindrance to sucking up to others. And this instinct is universal among classes and peoples. (…)
For, regardless of age, gender, race, or class, there is in human beings an unconscious need to venerate someone or something. Different people realize it through different forms. For some, it’s a picture or an autograph. For others, it’s small talk with an eminent or famous person, to be related to others time and again. The essential thing is that the idolaters shall have idols.
The instinct to worship, to bow down to, is overlooked (or even unacknowledged) in the vast majority of attempts to diagnose our behaviour and our ills.

So now we know what “spiritual” means. It means:
(1) Alone.
(2) Me.
(3) Making myself feel good.
(4) Not bothering with the messy business of screwed-up disagreeable people who show up at church and make you listen to their problems and ignore your own.
(5) Sociology class. There’s a word for this. It’s a perfectly good word, tested by centuries of use. The word is “atheist.” Please use it. Then we won’t think you’re so weird.

“Just how monstrous is the Sun’s ‘Flakensteins’ story?”
Well, yes: An abiding problem on the Right is one we mock the Left for:
Reflexively scoffing EVERYTHING “the other side” says.
Especially in the realm of culture.
That “millennials” think the Monster is “misunderstood” and “to be pitied” is, of course, the actual point of the story.
BUT: This analysis of the Sun’s “analysis” makes an even more important point:
Many people who work at the Sun are leftists.
They work there because it’s a job, in journalism.
When they write stuff like this, they are clumsily trying to fit a story to their (real or imaginary) readers’ presumed philistine prejudices. And as we see from the overwhelming reaction to their piece, they got it horribly wrong, and the mask slipped.
It’s possible to be so “smart” that you’re really stupid, playing a kind of 3-D chess with yourself, that ends up with all the pieces on the floor.
A great example is the now-defunct (I think) talking point that came out after one of those surveys regarding which TV shows were popular in Red or Blue states. When The Walking Dead scored highly on the Red side, it became received liberal wisdom that, well obviously, the zombies represent illegal Mexican immigrants, and the characters were acting out a right-wing fantasy of slaughtering them.
But as I’ve said ad nauseam, The Walking Dead is one of the most “diverse” programs on television. Why would “white supremacists” treasure a TV show with not one but two heroic black characters with dreads, and numerous interracial couplings?
And, more importantly, it has one of the most diverse fandoms.
Unlike desperately “progressive” liberal shows like Transparent or Girls, TWD fanbase itself isn’t just white. A moment’s googling by a curious reporter would have revealed thousands of photos of multi-racial fans at “cons” and on cruises, dressed as their favourite character regardless of their own, and the character’s, race and gender: black girls dressed as Negan, men dressed as the “Garbage Queen,” (admittedly not such a stretch…)
Not to mention “fan reaction” videos showing, say, a middle aged Asian woman cheering “badass” (white) Carol, and black families bawling over (white) Carl’s death.
But the reporters didn’t do that, or did and ignored the evidence of their senses. And made fools of themselves.
At least, though, those “cultural commentators” were liberals being liberals.
It’s highly likely that the Sun reporters in this case were leftists trying to “think like” right-wingers, and in failing miserably, they revealed more about themselves than their “stupid” readership.
