Agni (sharmishtha basu) Talks about Movie and Music 26.2.18 Tracy Chapman
This is another artist I truly admire and respect very much. I remember her first appearance, when her song was shortlisted for Grammy, this shy, reserved singer with her guitar singing “Fast Car”, now honestly I did not understand much of the song, but the very next day, lucky me, I got her cassette and after hearing that song fifty five times in the months to come I could feel its depth.
Being a great admirer I read whenever something was told about her and that only made me a bigger admirer.
She was born on 30th March 1964 in Cleveland, ohio. She was brought up by her single mother, who despite of financial restraints bought her a ukulele when she was three, she began playing guitar and writing songs at eight, and graduated in Anthropology. She signed Elektra records in 1986 and rest is history.
I love the songs of this artist because of their sincere depth, her wisdom shines through her lyrics, sometimes they get too dark, like “across the lines” or “why” but in this world of “music for only entertainment” or “commercial purposes” she stands apart! She speaks through her songs, and in a very clear voice, which non Americans like me can understand, I have heard many rock singers sing about social issues, so do singers like Sting, Bruce Springsteen but the sad thing is their pronunciation is hard to understand, we can only guess what they are talking about! Tracy Chapman or Don Henley are other story, like country singers they speak so clearly that I think everyone can understand them, thus their songs create a lot deeper bond!
If you have not heard her you are missing a terrific artist, do listen to her with open mind! Remember a true artist will speak his/her mind, you don’t have to agree with them to appreciate them!

Agni (sharmishtha basu) Talks about Movie and Music 19.2.18 Roger Whittaker
Born: 22 March 1936, Nairobi, Kenya. Born of English parents originally from Staffordshire, Whittaker spent his younger years living in Africa. It was here that he acquired his first musical instrument in the shape of a guitar made by an Italian prisoner-of-war. In 1956 he moved to South Africa to what was to be an ill-fated attempt at studying medicine in Cape Town. After a period of teaching, he arrived in Wales in 1959 to study marine biology and bio-chemistry. Until then, Whittaker had treated his musical career purely as a part-time occupation, entertaining small groups of friends and the occasional folk club date. By 1961, while still continuing his studies, he had played many cabaret slots and after recording an independently-funded single for charity, he secured a contract with Fontana Records. His second single, ‘Steel Man’ (as Rog Whittaker), reached the lower regions of the UK charts. Roger decided to eschew a promising career in science in favour of one in entertainment. His brand of romantic folk-ballads made him a favourite with audiences all around Britain, particularly in Northern Ireland, where he enjoyed a resident spot on the Ulster television show This And That.
His steady rise in popularity was bolstered by a successful appearance at the Knokke music festival in Belgium in 1967. Among his prize winning performances was the self-penned, ‘Mexican Whistler’, which was recorded in Paris soon after the festival and became a chart number 1 around the continent. Whittaker’s easy-going, relaxed style made him a star performer on the European television and concert circuit. By learning the translation of his songs phonetically, he has taken the trouble to record especially for his German audience. This growing band of admirers spread in time to the Antipodes and Canada, yet he had still to crack the UK market. This was achieved in 1969 with ‘The Leavin’ (Durham Town)’ and the follow-up, ‘I Don’t Believe In If Anymore’. Along with ‘New World In The Morning’, ‘Why’ (co-written with Joan Stanton) and ‘The Last Farewell’ (co-written with Ron Webster), these songs established Whittaker as a successful MOR performer and finally made him a star in his adopted home country, giving him his own BBC television series.

Did not change what the author had to say about himself in his own website, it is beautiful! Just removed one paragraph, which you can read in the site!
I think he is the philosopher of country music. That is why I love him so very much! His songs are so very deep, and are quite versatile too, starting from brooding “Durham Town” to naughty “If I were a rich man!” and then to soul stirring “If”!
His songs have everything which serious listeners, who prefer lyrics over anything else would adore. There was no stopping loving this singer after I started hearing him!

Agni (sharmishtha basu) Talks about Movie and Music 12.2.18 Richard Clayderman
Richard Clayderman (born Philippe Pages) took birth on 28th December 1953 in Paris, he learned piano from his father, a piano teacher, by the time he was twelve he was accepted in conservatoire de paris where he won great recognition in years to come. Financial problems caused by his father’s illness forced him to give up on his dream of becoming a classical pianist and take up the job of a bank clerk. He played with french singers like Johnny Hallyday.
In 1976 he was invited by Olivier Toussaint a french record producer to record a gentle piano ballad, Paul De Senneville has composed a ballad for his daughter Adeline, 23 year old Pages was picked up and rechristed as Richard Clayderman-Toussaint said he was an interesting musician with very soft touch- the ballad was “Balled pour Adeline” and it sold 22 million copies in 38 countries.
He lives in Saint Ouean France, a northern suburb of Paris with his wife Typhaine whom he married in 2010. He has a daugher (Maud) from his first wife Rosaline, and a son (Peter) from his second wife Christine.
Well I don’t know if you have heard his music, all I can say is he is pure magic- like a few other artists like Gheorghe Zamfir his was love at first listening too, I heard his “French melodies” cassette in 1987 or 1988 I don’t know if it is an album or compilation by Indian cassette company but it had ten pieces and since 1987 I have been listening to them, and never get tired of them! They are amazing! So are all his other pieces! Now please don’t ask me their names, French and Latin are same to me!
I really don’t think that you have never heard him, if you have not had the chance to listening to this magical maestro- try now!
