Operation: Reader Engagement
Readers: It's been too long. The holidays and their accompanying productivity lull are here, which means it's high time I recommit to reader engagement. Step 1: Click the damn ON button so readers can send questions. (Check.) Step 2: Tell ALOHA RODEO co-author Julian to start posting cool trivia questions. (Check.) Step 3. Share more! In the coming month(ish), we're going to post more stories from the cutting-room floor and share more about what it was like to report and write this book. We get a lot of questions about the process of co-writing, for example, so we'll be sure to focus on that. In the meantime, if you have any other questions, or just want to share a fun personal story, fire away. Mahalo!

Best American Science & Nature Writing 2015!
What a thrill to be included in this year's anthology alongside so many terrific writers, and to know that people are actually reading and appreciating "The Aftershocks." Thanks all!

Archives Aren't Fossils. Awaken Them!
Friends and Countrymen,
For more than a decade now I've been telling stories about offbeat personalities, faraway places, weird science, and the occasional criminal. You know: Usual fare for the incurably curious.
Over that time, I've managed to define a great body—of work, anyway. But articles and books are scattered across the internet in various forms of design, readability, and freedom. I searched for someone or something that could provide a solution to that problem, but came up empty.
So I became the someone and FIRSTHAND became the something. After selecting some favorite articles and book chapters, I used a tool called Creatavist to remaster them into a living breathing compilation. Woven into the collection are extras like postscripts, videos, maps, and photos taken while on assignment to places like China, Egypt, Holland, the South Pacific, and... Illinois.
I'm distributing FIRSTHAND myself as part of an experiment in Digital Age collected works. I want to find out if there might be a better way for writers to, ur, take control of their bodies.
Purchase a copy of FIRSTHAND and let me know what you think. (It's also available on Amazon and soon enough on other e-readers.) Then tell a friend, a fellow writer, and even your Mom. Meanwhile, I'll occasionally blast out an update with news and new material. Stick around. It'll be fun.
Onward,
David

New Project: Firsthand
While The End of Money: Counterfeiters, Preachers, Techies, Dreamers--and the Coming Cashless Society continues to be relevant, pulling me into currency or Bitcoin-related conversations almost daily, there are many other stories and subjects that fascinate me. Some of them I’ve been lucky enough to write about for a living. After thinking back on just how much ground I’ve covered over the past decade, I recently decided that my next project is going to be a compilation of some of my best (read: favorite) longform features. A handful of them were originally written for Wired, but there’s a nice mix of stories for other publications, including Nature, Salon, and High Country News. I’m also including a chapter from each of my three books.
The collection is titled Firsthand and will be released as an e-book in the (very!) near future.

The paperback is here!
Yes! The End of Money is now available in paperback.
In honor of the new edition, I went back and checked in with some of my favorite characters from the book, including notorious counterfeiter Wesley Weber and “monetary architect” Bernard von NotHaus. You can read all the updates on my blog. The Creativist has also published an excerpt from the book that you can read for free online, or pass on to your friends and fellow book club members.
I am also working on another, bigger project digital project... stay tuned.

The paperback is almost here!
Just a little more than a month before the paperback edition of The End of Money hits bookstores. I'm pumped. Meanwhile, I've been catching up with some of my favorite characters from my travels--Birch, Sinha, von NotHaus, Guest and more--to find out what they've been up to.
What's in store after that? Hard to say for sure just yet but I'm juggling some awesome potential projects relating to subjects as varied as pollen, the psychology of saving, the Vietnam War and tax refund fraud. Stay tuned!
