Eastern Screech Owl

The photo at the top of this site is that of an Eastern Screech Owl. I first encountered on while attempting to camp in a tent by myself in the woods nearby my childhood home in Fall River, Massachusetts. Being around eight years of age. I thought it was a great adventure until the woods began getting dark with approaching nighttime. I heard many birds giving their final chirps as they settled down for sleep, and then all became quiet. The trees and bushes around me only dimly visible, suddenly a spooky and haunting sounding trill from some animal filled the woods. I imagined some horrible beast, but that was the sound of the Eastern Screech Owl. I had my tent disassembled and escaped to a nearby field in under two minutes. That experience and the unique call of a screech owl never left me. They are beautiful birds, but their call can be quite creepy to a susceptible mind.

Oldest Long-Distance Hiking Trail

The Long Trail is a hiking trail located in Vermont and is the oldest long-distance trail in the United States. It is 273 miles long, running from the Massachusetts state line, north through Vermont to the Canadian border. Construction began in 1910 and completed in 1930. The Green Mountain Club was responsible for the construction and has been the primarily caregiver for the trail ever since.

The trail crosses nearly all the Green Mountains summits, including Jay Peak. There is a 10-mile stretch of trail beginning east of Bennington, Vermont that came into the limelight when six people vanished in that area between 1945 and 1950. The fate of all but one remains a mystery.
