How Not to Critique
In another venue, someone posted a link to a criticism of science fiction. Criticisms of science fiction are ubiquitous and frequently wrongheaded (the critic has read one or at most two SF stories and judges the whole elephant by its left rear second toenail.) But the one I ran into today (via another venue far, far away from here) is a perfect example of several bad critical practices in one. Its title purports to give "The Ten Errors of Science Fiction" and its focus is...

Thursday Already?!
Notice to Universe: I need MORE time not LESS time. No fair stealing entire days without my noticing.
One of the things I did not anticipate, years back when I started doing this (and there are myriads of such things) is that answering comments (which seems only polite) could take up so much time. And be so invisible to people looking at when the last post was. It's nice to have conversations going on, but given my so-called schedule (get up, start working, eat cereal, keep working...

10:01:51: Cloudy. More rain due, with T-storms, wind, etc. Working on maps.
19:13:07: Will try to photograph east-half map tonight and prepare cut-points for crop for final.
19:14:58: My home town got 8 inches from Alex already. Pictures from Padre Island and Port Isabel look as expected: wet and windy.

10:43:32: We got rain last night--1.5 inches. This is a "rescue rain" but not a saturating rain. However...more is supposedly on the way.
17:01:07: Page proofs will be showing up soon. MUST finish map before they do. Several more chapters wouldn't hurt, either.
17:01:57: More T-storms this afternoon--needed rain. But close strike lightning can make the cartographer's hand twitch while inking. Wiggly trail.
19:43:32: New post up at http://www.80acresonline.org/blog/ on predation in lily...

20:31:25: There are Sundays like this. Glad there aren't more of them. On the good side, wonderful spouse rescued robe & shoes & did other stuff.

09:48:51: At some point, the Saturday Splits must include work on music--esp. tomorrow's anthem and finding my missing folder for lessons.

Women Writers Are Not Pets
Nnedi Okorafor has gotten a lot of flak for her book
Who Fears Death
, including being interrupted and verbally attacked at the launch signing for the book. She's been told she isn't African enough to write about Africa, that her use of some African traditions that whites have used to denigrate African culture in general means she is denigrating African culture in general, and that she's possessed by evil. But she's also been attacked by others who feel she isn't negative enough about her ...

Mapping: Look, More Mountains...!
Twenty-odd years ago, when I first did the maps for the world of the Paks stories...leading to last year's Mystery of the Missing Map(s), I didn't get anywhere close to finishing the overall map. I did the bits of it needed for Sheepfarmer's Daughter, and Surrender None, and that was that. After all, those were just going to be mass-market paperbacks, right? (Wrong.) Unfortunately, the original map went missing, and so on and so on through all the difficulties previously described...
